Going to watch the movie HipHop-eration at Te Awamutu’sRegent Theatre had an unexpectedripple effect for students atKorakonui School.

Hip Hop-eration follows atroupe of courageous, cheeky, senior citizens (Hip Op-erationdance crew from Waiheke Island)on an extraordinary quest to per-form at the World Hip Hop Cham-pionships in Las Vegas.

The feel-good documentaryproves age has no limits andmakes you want to celebrate life, regardless of age or condition.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Water a council issueI wish to rebut some of the claims

made in the recent Courier article‘Better water care needed’.

The first issue is the generalimpression that water is a diminishingresource that must be carefullyrationed out for the future.

In reality, water (as a liquid, vapouror solid, i.e. ice) is part of a closedhydrological cycle.

This means the amount of water onearth is unchanged from two millionyears ago and will probably be thesame in two million years’ time.

The real issue, barely mentioned, isthe collection, treatment and distri-bution of drinking water. This is amanagement responsibility, not a con-sumer issue.

The second issue is the commentthat “250 litres (Waipa average) perperson per day is unsustainable”.

Actually, since 1956, every NewZealand Public Water Supply thatwanted government subsidy wasrequired to be designed on the basis of250 litres per person per day. Why isthis now unsustainable?

The final issue relates to theopinion about the inability to supplyenough water to a growing Cambridgecommunity.

The main source of water for Cam-bridge is Lake Karapiro (water volume8.5 cubic kilometres).

Cambridge uses less than 10 millioncubic meters per year. This is less thanone-tenth of one per cent of the lakevolume.

As I said earlier, the supply ofsufficient drinking water is a councilissue, not a resource availability orconsumer usage issue.

Supporting our shopsgood for Te Awamutu

I was pleased to read Gail Corboy’s letter andagree with her — we all need to support our town asmuch as possible.

I’m not suggesting to shop only in Te Awamutu, but every little bit helps and would be appreciatedby the retailers.

Te Awamutu is very lucky in having a goodbalance of different shops, but it could be a matterof using them or losing them.

We have all witnessed the demise of other townsnot too far away and once they are on thedownward spiral, it may be too late.

On a brighter note, several groups are trying toget something started to bring the Christmas backinto Christmas and make our town a happyexciting place to be in December.

If you have any good ideas, they would muchappreciated. Please phone me 870 1947 in theevening.

We all love our town, let’s support it.COLLEEN WILSON

On Anzac Day next year threelines of Robinsons from New Zealandand England will congregate in theWorcestershire market town ofTenbury Wells to honour family thatfought in World War I — andespecially Robert Charles Robinsonwho had bought and developed landat Oparau in 1910 and died of his warwounds and pneumonia in 1918.

He was one of four brothers(Robert, Barney, Jack and Rupert)and two cousins (Bill and Bob)working land in Oparau and fivewould serve their new country.

Robert Charles Robinson isburied at Etaples Military Cemeteryin France.

In March this year Carol Robin-son of Dunedin (the granddaughterof Bill) met her second cousin JohnRobinson (grandson of Rupert) whenhe visited New Zealand fromYorkshire.

Her interest in wider familyresearch was triggered— both from those firstsix who came toOparau and Kawhiaand the English familyfrom Tenbury Wells.

She also foundRobert Robinson, another grandson ofRupert, who runs the200-year-old RobinsonsApple Cider business inTenbury Wells.

Rupert hadreturned home in about1923 to take over thefamily business.

This is her familystory.

Six Robinsons from Tenbury Wells came to Oparauin 1910. Robert Charles Robinson bought twoblocks of land there and developed them with thehelp of his younger brothers Barney, Jack andRupert and cousins Bill and Bob.

Five of the six, including my grandfather, wentto WWI from Kawhia from 1916-1918.

Bill and his cousins Jack and Bob returned toOparau after the war.

Bill met Dora while he was recovering from warwounds in Tenbury Wells and she followed him outto marry in 1920. They were all entitled to a block ofland from the Government for their war service.

Unfortunately they all received second-class landwhich was very difficult to develop into farms, but theyhad to hold onto it for 10 years as a condition ofacceptance.

They all then gave up these blocks of land after muchstruggle and little reward.

Bill drove the Oparau school bus run and had afreight business from Oparau to Te Awamutu from the1920s until the 1940s, while Dora owned the Oparaustore from 1921 until 1947.

Jack married Tiri Morgan, of Kawhia, in 1922 andlived there until the 1940s. He ran the service car fromKawhia to Te Awamutu from 1926 and the mail runfrom 1929.

He also owned the service station in Kawhia.Bob worked at the Tokanui Hospital farm for a while

before following a career in mental health care in theSouth Island.

After meeting my second cousin and finding Robert,I was sent more family information and memorabilia, including the English family tree, with family photos, and copies of very moving letters written by RobertCharles and Jack about their pioneer experiences inOparau.

The stories, including the details of a familymemorial to Robert Charles at Burford, near TenburyWells, resulted in my recent visit to Kawhia to spendtime with Moya Shaw, a cousin of Tiri Robinson.

She took me to the All Saints AnglicanChurch and showed me the restorationof Kawhia's lychgate and the memorialpanels in honour of the 32 men fromKawhia who were killed in WWI.

There stands the name R.C. Robinson.I also visited Yvonne Robinson,

daughter-in-law of Jack and Tiri, whoshared several photo albums and manyfamily stories with me.

Recently my English relatives toldme about the ‘Blood Swept Lands andSeas of Red' installation at the Tower ofLondon.

Robert applied for two of the ceramicpoppies — one for Robert Charles'memorial in Burford and the other forme — to bring back to All Saints Churchin Kawhia.

John arranged for Robert Charles'name to be included in the lists of namesread out daily at Tower Hill.

Last Wednesday he, and three gen-erations of his family, heard the nameamongst 180 others at the daily reading. At the corresponding time I remem-bered Robert Charles at the AnglicanCathedral in Dunedin.

Some of the land originally owned byRobert Charles and his brothers on thePirongia West Road was bought by mymaternal grandfather, Tom Nicholas, in1932.

My mother and her sisters grew upthere. I have visited and stayed for longperiods on that farm, first with mygrandparents and, more recently, withmy mother and cousins.

The family still farms it successfullytoday.

I also knew my paternal grandmotherDora well, so Oparau is very special tome.

This year I've found my Englishfamily again — the Robinson family hascome full circle.

“Miel Meyer managest h e c h e e s e - m a k i n g ,brother Geert Meyer ischief cheese-maker andsister Sophia ‘Fieke’ Vandem Bogaard and hus-band, Bert look after thec o w s a n d m i l k p r o -duction used to make thecheese.

“Their children alsoh e l p o u t w h e n e v e rneeded, so there are threegenerations involved inthe story.

“It really is a familyaffair.

“ T h e M e y e r s a l s ostarted a cheese shop(now operated by some-one else) — so the pro-gramme shows the wholecheese-making process

from paddock to plate.”While the episode

focuses on the cheese pro-duction, Mr Taylor waskeen to show the family’sinvolvement in the com-munity as well.

“Having the agricul-tural day happeningwhile we were in theWaikato filming for fivedays was a real bonus —we wanted to show the

Meyers were more thanj u s t f a r m e r s o rcheesemakers.”

Mr Taylor expects theprogramme will play inFebruary or March nextyear.

Top team celebrate successBY DEAN TAYLOR

TC281014DT02

TOP TEAM: Some of the volunteer Hospice Te Awamutu team who shared a morning tea shout with Waikato Hospicemanagement to celebrate five years in the new shop and the honour of being Hospice Waikato’s most profitableshop. From left: Myrtle McDowell (volunteer), Lyn Taylor (volunteer), Betty Herbert (co-ordinator), Karen Mansfield(Hospice Waikato manager of volunteer services), Jo Rewi (volunteer), Heather Quigley (co-ordinator), CraigTamblyn (chief executive Hospice Waikato), Gaye Jellie (co-ordinator) and Judy Barakat (co-ordinator). The fifth TeAwamutu Hospice Shop co-ordinator is June Webb.

Hospice Waikato chiefexecutive Craig Tamblynand manager volunteerservices Karen Mansfieldpaid a visit to the TeAwamutu Hospice Shoprecently to celebrate thesuccess of the local store.

The morning tea shoutacknowledged the fifthbirthday of the Te Awa-mutu store in its currentlocation in the GeorgeStreet shopping precinct— a move the store co-ordinators and volunteerssay has been great forbusiness.

And that business isalso reflected in the TeAwamutu Hospice Shop’sposition as Hospice Wai-kato’s most profitableshop of the six stores inthe region.

Mr Tamblyn says thereare severalreasons for theTe Awamutu success.

Firstly he gives creditto Te Awamutu’s team of40 volunteers and the fiveco-ordinators who make itall happen.

“They do a great joband that is reflected inhow well the store does forus,” says Mr Tamblyn.

He says he subscribesto the theory that NewZealand would not runwithout volunteers andthe team that work forHospice Waikato is proof.

Ms Mansfie ldreinforced Mr Tamblyn’spraise of the Te Awamutuvolunteers.

“They are a great, hardworking team,” she says.

Five co-ordinatorswork one day per weekeach and look after theother volunteers. Theytake turns working theSaturday shift.

M r T a m b l y n s a y sanother of the successesof Hospice Shops is theywill take anything that isdonated, prepare it forsale and place it in thebest shop for the type ofproduct.

In Te Awamutu one oft h e b e s t s e l l e r s i swoman’s tops, so theymake sure they alwayshave plenty of stock.

The volunteers addedthat their customers likethat the store has some-thing for everyone.

Recently Te Awamutustarted selling furnitureand that is working wellalso.

The volunteers saythey could do even betterif they had more room.

The final reason forthe Te Awamutu successis the great support fromthe Te Awamutu com-munity. Mr Tamblyn saysthe store is always busy, and the quality of donatedgoods is fantastic, whichmeans they sell quickly.

He says there areabout 600 Hospice Wai-kato volunteers makingsure the the servicesoffered are of a highstandard.

About half of HospiceWaikato’s patients are

f r o m r u r a l W a i k a t oareas.

H o s p i c e W a i k a t ooffers a full range of palli-ative care services whichoffers patients the choice

to die, pain free, at homew h i l e p r o v i d i n g t h enecessary support to fam-ily and carers.

Hospice Waikato isalso the only one in New

Zealand to operate a chil-dren’s hospice — Rain-bow Place, Waikato’ss p e c a l i s e d F a m i l yCentered Service.

Any help is always

valued, be it donations ofgoods, buying or offeringvolunteer help. Talk tothe co-ordinator at the TeAwamutu Hospice Shopfor information.

There was no club in Te Awamutu atthe time, but through Malcolm Brown shestarted playing for Hamilton’s West EndBadminton Club.

The pair would travel to Hamilton forclub nights and interclub fixtures in MrBrown’s sports car of the moment.

The group soon swelled with theaddition of Norma Duncan, followed bythe late Barry Hodgson (when he arrivedin Te Awamutu) joining them to play inHamilton.

Te Awamutu YMI was built in 1964 —the catalyst for starting a badminton clublocally.

The first meeting was held in the TeAwamutu Tennis Clubrooms, with LeithShand becoming the first president andMrs Grant and Mrs Strawbridge sharingthe role of secretary.

Mrs Grant was women’s club singleschampion in 1964, 69 and 73, as well aswinning numerous other doubles andmixed doubles titles.

Her daughter, Robyn followed in herfootsteps, joining her on the honoursboard as women’s singles champion in1974, 80, 81, 82.

Her grandson Ryan Taylor is a currentplaying club member.

At Waikato level, Mrs Grant says shehad the knack of always being runner-up,never the champion.

She looks back fondly on her daysplaying in the Bledisloe Hall in Hamiltonand home-hosting visiting players, including four South Africans on oneoccasion, and meeting and befriendingsome of this country’s finest players —the likes of Richard Purser who had alsobeen a guest in the Grant home.

“We start at 10pm Fridayand will ride through thenight, expecting to finishsometime on the Saturdayafternoon,” says MarcGascoigne.

“The race, starting inCoromandel town, will takeus down the coast toThames, across to Tairua, upto Whitianga, then back overto Coromandel. Then we doit all over again.”

Along the way they wouldlike to support AngelaSunkel (www.bonemarrowforlife .com), who hasleukemia and needs life-saving treatment in Americaat a cost of $1.3 million.

“We’ve set up a fundrais-ing page (www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/TGRforgood)and we have so far raised$7200.

“The K4 challenge isnothing compared to whatAngela and her husband,Raymond, and their

families are going through.“Our cyclists want to help

them get to their fundraisinggoal, and get Angela back tofull health.”

Loader says even if it’sjust the cost of a coffee, it alladds up and is very muchappreciated.

Angela Sunkel is thedaughter of Ronnie Smith, akeen cyclist who races Egrade in the club’s summerseries road races.
