The South African Weather Service warned people that temperatures will be rising to the mid-30s, but the blistering heat should be broken as soon as it rains. However, once the heatwave is over, South Africans can expect a hot, dry summer season in the coming months, thanks to the El

Niño effect. El Niño involves a shift in winds in the Pacific Ocean along the equator every few years, warming the water more than usual and triggering a change in global weather patterns. Lydenburg does not have water restrictions yet, but restrictions have been implemented in Gauteng. The heatwave has seen the water demand constantly increasing, thus resulting in reservoirs operating at very low levels, even in Lydenburg.

THE retrenchment notices for 400 contractors of Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) started on 3 October. The retrenchments will take place at Twickenham Mine outside Burgersfort. 800 contractors could lose their jobs by the end of the year. Mpumi Sithole, spokesperson of Anglo American, said Twickenham will be demobilised till 2017 and that the current macro economy places immense pressure on the market. “Anglo American Platinum made a decision to delay all expansionary projects,” Amplats spokesperson Mpumi Sithole said.Sithole said conventional mining would continue at the Hackney Shaft while the Twickenham Shaft undergoes “care maintenance”. This will retain 1 300 jobs, she said.The contractors work for Capital Development Services (CDS). Mr Frans Burger, executive head of SAN Contracting Services in Rustenburg, said that this is an immense setback for everyone. “Meetings are taking place with the mining unions … we will assist them (contractors) with transfers to other mining companies, but if there are no positions available, then there is nothing we can do,” Burger added.“We won't be able to find work for so many people at once. But we will try our best,” he said

DURING the f inanc ia l year 2014/2015, the province recorded 101 116 cases serious crimes. The Witbank Cluster contributed 20% of all serious crimes to the statistics committed for the period under review, followed by the Middelburg and the Nelspruit clusters which contributed 10% each. Secunda only recorded 9%; KwaMhlanga contributed 8% while the Pienaar and Acornhoek clusters recorded 7% each. Out of the seven categories of contact crimes, which include murder, attempted murder, sexual offences, assault with an intention to cause grievously bodily harm (GBH), assault common, aggravated robbery and common robbery, three of those crimes declined. Murder and robbery aggravated have taken a hike by 3.1% (831 cases) and 7.7% (5656 cases) respectively; while both assault GBH and common assault have increased by 0.6%. Mob justice has since been discovered as one of the contributors to the increase of murder cases in the province. Police stations such as Embalenhle and Vosman have contributed approximately 7.9% and 6.0% respectively to the increased rate of murder in the province.Sexual cases have gone down by 8.5% compared to last financial year. It should be noted that attempted murder and common robbery has decreased by 8.0% and 1.4% respectively. According to the statistics, Witbank, Pienaar, Accornhoek, KwaMhlanga and Middelburg are the top five Clusters with high contact crime cases.

Some crime categories under aggravated robbery have increased drastically. Carjacking, truck hijacking, robbery of cash in transit, bank robbery, house robbery, business robbery and street robbery fall under this category.Cash-in-transit has increased by 55.6% while carjacking increased by 41.8%. It is however pleasing to note that incidences of truck hijacking have decreased by 21.3%. Last year the same time truck hijacking cases were up by 37.8%. With regards to property related crimes that include burglary at business premises, burglary at residential area, theft of motor vehicles, theft out of motor vehicles and stock theft we have seen an increase in three categories. The increasing number of businesses owned by foreign nationals who keep their assets in the business area attracts criminals; hence there is an increase of 4.7% on burglary at businesses. Cell phones, cigarettes and airtime vouchers are some of the items that attract criminals to shops owned by business people from foreign countries. Cases of theft out of motor vehicles have also increased by 4.2% and stock theft has risen by 0.5%MEC Vusi Shongwe's said: “As part of supporting SAPS' crime prevention initiatives, the department continues to implement awareness campaigns aimed at enhancing Rural Safety, Border Security and eradicating Gender Based Violence among others.When we deal with crime we also need to take into cognisance its effect on the victims, which is why we have welcomed the decision by Police Minister, Mr. Nathi Nhleko to increase the budget for detective services by 7, 8%. If more cases are successfully resolved by our detectives and convictions secured, those who are affected by crime will find closure and more people will come forward to report crime. “We remain concerned about cases of police killings that we have seen in the province. Those who attack law enforcement officers are actually attacking the State and SAPS should therefore spare no effort in bringing them to book. “ We are further appealing to communities to report if they have any information regarding police killings. An attack on the men and women in blue is a sheer display of cowardice by a few rogue elements that do not belong in our society. Those who will be convicted should be given lengthy jail sentences so it becomes clear that acts intending to sabotage communities' rights to safety cannot be tolerated.”

HIERDIE week het ons met groot verwagting die nuwe Ford Everest getoets. Dit is ’n heel nuwe voertuig, gebaseer op die meganika van die nuwe Ranger wat eersdaags hier sal wees. Die Everest ry egter op ’n ander veerstelsel, wat onder andere agter nou spiraalvere het. Stabiliteit en ritgehalte is uitstekend. Dit veerstelsel is ferm, maar glad nie ongemaklik nie.Wat die Everest in ’n klas van sy eie plaas is toerusting. Met die inklim was ek teleurgesteld om net ’n spoedmeter te sien. Maar skakel hom aan en alles is daar in digitale en analoog formaat. Toereteller, brandstof, hitte, kompas, leunhoeke links en regs en voor en agter, Ford se raakskerm mediastelsel (10 luidsprekers) Bloutand, USB en met elke konneksiefunksie waaraan jy kan dink. Ritrekenaar. Dubbelsone klimaatbeheer, ook agter. Minstens vier 12 V kragpunte. Outo kragruite en spieëls. Dit maak 147 kW en 470Nm wringkrag.Op die pad ry die Everest baie lekker. Ferm geveer met ferm leersitplekke sal jy gemaklik lang afstande kan ry.Van die merk af is dié Ford nie blitsig nie en jy kan voel dit is ’n groot voertuig. Dit bou egter vinnig spoed, is rigtingvas en stabiel. Groot skyfremme op al vier wiele doen hulle werk goed. Wat my beïndruk het was hoe rustig die enjin op spoed is. Net 2 800 opm in sesde teen 160. Dit behoort baie ekonomies te wees.Die Everest is stil en baie gemaklik op die pad. Groot 18 duim wiele het geen probleem met slaggate nie. Bougehalte voel en lyk baie goed. Alle kontroles is lig en dit bestuur baie lekker.Hoe jy ookal na hom kyk, beïndruk die nuwe Ford Everest op elke gebied. Daar is ’n oorvloed spasie, krag en elektroniese tegnologie.My enigste kritiek is die gebrek aan ’n smukspieëltjie op die bestuurder se sonskerm. Dit is ’n goedkoop item wat standaard behoort te wees.Ek dink die nuwe Everest stel nuwe en hoër standaarde in die 4x4 SUV klas en jy moet beslis na hom gaan kyk as jy in die mark is vir ’n topklas voertuig. DIE Volkswagen krisis het aanvanklik vir my geklink na ’n molshoop waarvan ’n berg gemaak word. Wat maak dit saak as hulle bietjie lieg? Alle motorvervaardigers lieg met verbruiksyfers wat die man in die straat nooit kan haal nie, want motors word onder optimale toestande in laboratoriums getoets. Dit is logies dat dieselde sal geld vir skadelike uitlaatgasse. Maar dit is nie. Dit is ’n berg. Tegnies beteken dit dat sagteware op 2 liter viersilinder diesels geïnstalleer is, wat skadelike uitlaatgasse beperk wanneer die motors getoets word, maar afskakel onder normale ry toestande. Dit (die afskakel) word gedoen om die motors meer ekonomies en kragtiger te maak. Die toestelle wat die uitlaatgasse beheer, het ’n negatiwe uitwerking op verbruik en verrigting.Ekonomies is dit ’n ramp. VW aandele verloor miljarde. Groepe en regerings dagvaar VW omdat daar verlaagde belasting op die “skoner” voertuie betaal is en regerings so miljoene se belasting verloor het, gebaseer op die werklike situasie. Herverkoopwaardes word geraak.Die terugroep van 11 miljoen voertuie vir herstelwerk gaan nog miljoene kos. Op ouer diesels is ’n sagteware oplossing beskikbaar, maar op moderne diesels impliseer dit ook hardeware komponente. Verbruikers

CRANKSHAFT bearing failures in Land Rover V6 diesel engines produced before 2012 has led to warnings to owners of such vehicles to take precautionary action.Land Rover Discovery owner Margot Birbeck has laid a complaint with the Motor Industry Ombudsman after a specific crankshaft bearing in her vehicle’s engine failed, causing the engine to seize. Birbeck claimed that she had discovered that “hundreds of Land Rover engines” were failing as a result of the fault, which was ascribed to the incorrect location of the main bearing shells during assembly, or through rotation of the shells during normal use.Models impacted included the Discovery 3 and 4, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, Birbeck said. This was confirmed by Jaguar Land Rover South Africa. “The cause of these engine failures is a known and published manufacturer fault related to the crankshaft bearing,” Birbeck wrote. The problem was published in a so-called TOPix report, a technical report in which Land Rover dealers are advised about technical problems.“The report, however, downplays the extent of the problem, misrepresents the expected occurrence and grossly overestimates Land Rover’s recovery plan,” Birbeck claimed.“The report was published in May 2014, but was certainly not communicated to loyal Landy owners or to prospective buyers. In fact, Land Rover has failed in every way to take responsibility for the issue.“Numerous preventative measures could have been implemented with regards to oil and services on affected vehicles (Land Rover has a list of all engine numbers and know exactly who has and will be affected). Better still, these vehicles should have been recalled as other manufacturers have been held to do in the past. “The car owner will experience the problem with no warnings and by a sudden engine failure with probably less than 30 seconds to pull off the road. The vehicle will also have to be towed away.”

Birbeck said the next shock, after the initial breakdown and towing costs, would be the repair bill. The quote given to her for the repair of her 2008 Discovery 3, with 132 000km on the clock, amounted to R260 000.“Land Rover’s lack of action and intentional disregard for its customers is appalling. Today, companies have a social and ethical responsibility. If other motor

industry companies such as Volkswagen and Toyota are held accountable why shouldn’t high-end brands such as Land Rover?” Land Rover South Africa said it was aware of the issue experienced by Birbeck. Spokeswoman Nicola Clarke said: “Customer safety and satisfaction is our number one priority, so it is unfortunate when instances such as this affect owners of Land Rover vehicles. “The issue affects only 1.3 percent of Land Rover engines sold in South Africa over the past 10 years,” she said.“Changes have been made at production level and all new engines manufactured since 2012 use a new bearing design. Dealers have been briefed on the procedure for any engine that experiences this issue. “While it’s not possible to establish whether an engine is susceptible, the cause was identified – as detailed in the TOPIx report.”TOPIx reports were communications intended to aid the technical community with information and diagnostic process, as well as helping dealerships manage the expectations of customers who are affected, Clarke said.These reports were openly published and available to third-party repairers or any individual who requested access. “This is a transparent process that we fully support,” Clarke said. Clarke claimed that Jaguar Land Rover South Africa had “gone to great lengths” to help customers.“Vehicles that are under warranty will be repaired free of charge, as part of the comprehensive factory warranty. For vehicles affected outside of the warranty period we have offered customers goodwill assistance.” Clarke said Birbeck’s vehicle was purchased as a used vehicle, from a non-approved retailer that has no affiliation with Jaguar Land Rover South Africa.additionally, this vehicle was last serviced within the Jaguar Land Rover retail network at 77 000km.“We cannot comment on the service history from this point up until 133 000km when the incident occurred," Clarke said. “Despite this, goodwill assistance was offered to Birbeck, where one-third of the parts cost would be covered. Unfortunately this offer was rejected, as the customer insisted on financial reparations as well as the opportunity to repair the vehicle at an unauthorised repairer.” Clarke said the company’s customer service director was in contact with those who experienced this problem. “The matter has been referred to the Motor Industry Ombudsman. ON 23 September Booysendal Mine & Mototolo Mine hosted the Annual Association of Mine Managers South Africa (AMMSA) Eastern District Charity Golf Day at the Highland Gate Golf Estate in Dullstroom.With the sponsorships of numerous Eastern district mines and small businesses & contractors, a reasonable amount was raised and will be contributed to various

organisations determined by the AMMSA members.At 09:30, 100 golfers took to the tees. Amongst them were well-known rugby players Jannie de Beer, Ray Mordt, Wikus van Heerden, Deon van Rensburg, Doppies Le Grange, Cobus Grobbelaar & Blue Bulls Team Manager, Wynie Strydom. Oefening Ramkat 2015 Juniors

DIE jaarlikse Oefening Ramkat 2015 het plaasgevind gedurende die naweek van 2 Oktober by PLM Boskamp en het weer vir groot opwinding gesorg onder die junior jagters. Die dreigende stormweer Vrydagaand het die juniors op hete-kole gehad om hul aandete betyds voor te berei in die veld. Saterdagoggend het die kompetisie afgeskop met verskeie skietoefeninge. Windgeweer, groot kaliber skietkompetisie, kettieskiet, boogskiet, dier geluide identifikasie en 'n lantern bekruip was deel daarvan.Die bestuurslede van Oefening Ramkat spreek graag hul dank uit aan Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine, Larami Spur, PLM Boerdery, Mr. Joubert, 4x4
