How can I set controls on my home network and family devices to keep my children safe? How can I help my child stay in control of privacy settings on their social media accounts? What can I do to help manage boundaries around my child’s screen time? What do I do if my child receives a threatening message on their phone? How do I start a conversation with my child about sexting or pornography? What can I do to remove an inappropriate image or post that is online that involves my child?

The Joys and Struggles of Online Connectedness, cont.

The shadow side of bringing people together online is that there are new sets of issues that studentsand parents need to navigate. At Arndell, we incorporate a number of age-appropriate cybersafetyprograms throughout our students' time at the College. Unlike most parents, children are ‘digital natives’, having been immersed in world with the internettheir whole lives. This means parents can feel in the dark when it comes to all things cybersafety.Thankfully, there are lots of helpful resources out there. I strongly recommend all parents in the Arndell community visit the eSafety Commissioner website(www.esafety.gov.au). We are blessed in Australia with the only government agency of its kinddedicated to eSafety, and they have provided resources to help all members of our community. Forexample, there are resources for parents to questions such as:

The website also has plenty of resources designed for young people, so it’s something our studentscan use to arm themselves with useful knowledge and skills. Sadly, all our children at some point will encounter challenging situations on the internet. It is sohelpful to have conversations with children before they encounter difficulties in the online world, sothat they can be better equipped to deal with it. If you haven’t already, why not look for theopportunity over the next week or two to have a conversation about staying safe online?

Secondary Leadership Induction Service

Mark 10:43-44But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, andwhoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else.

There has been a lot of talk of leadership this year. Leadership from our governments as theyrespond to the pandemic. Leadership in lots of organisations as they seek to do the best they can tokeep going yet also care for their people and the community. And last week we had our SecondaryLeadership Induction Service for our 2020/21 College leaders.

It was a special event in many ways. It was wonderful to acknowledge those students who have beenasked to take on specific leadership responsibilities, Captains, Vice Captions, House Captains andPrefects, to serve the College. Despite restrictions we were able to livestream the event so that theSecondary School and parents could be a part of the event (another new skill we’re learning).

Yet, to appoint is one thing, the more important thing is how to be a leader in the College. DrLeechman very clearly said that our leaders are called to serve. They are to serve like Jesus who gavehis life as a sacrifice. We don’t go to the cross like he did, his death has already achieved eternal lifefor those who trust in him. Yet, his example shows how to put others before ourselves.

Dr Leechman went a step further and challenged our leaders to ‘earn their badge’, to show by whatthey do that they are servants following Jesus’ example. I hope and pray that over the coming yearthey (and all our senior students) will be true servants, seeking the good of the Arndell communitybefore their own wants.

If you have any questions about the Christian faith or chaplaincy at the College, please contact theChaplaincy team.
