The recent disruption to education brought a new level of collaborative planning and discussion across schools, faculties and teachers with a renewed and recharged goal to design high level teaching and learning programs for students in a digital, delivery mode. Change - Collaboration - Community

The past weeks and months have brought much change to our lives and wehave had to learn to do things in new ways.  Our modes of communication, theway we build and nurture social connections and relationships and how wedeliver high, quality education to our community have had to change. The 4C’sof 21st century skills – collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, andcommunication have been stretched and we have had to rethink what society,the workforce and community might look like in the future. Change - Collaboration - Community, continued The Arndell Learning Journey Framework highlights collaboration – working together towards acommon goal, as an important interpersonal character skill needed for teaching and learning.Collaboration has also become key to pedagogical practice, with much educational researchsupporting how collaboration enhances students learning outcomes. With collaboration, comes flexible leadership through trust, responsibility and equity. I would like toacknowledge and thank the Arndell community for demonstrating their trust in the College tocontinue delivering high quality teaching and learning in these changing times; for the Collegedemonstrating their trust in the students for taking responsibility and being active participants intheir learning programmes in the off-campus mode; and to the parents and families who havesupported the College by encouraging and assisting student learning in the off–campus homesetting. The past weeks have demonstrated how schools and families can work positively andsuccessfully in collaboration.  1 Corinthians 12:14, “For the body is not one member, but many”, reminds us that like the church,Arndell, is not supported by one person, but by all of us – the students, teachers, groundsmen,canteen staff, uniform staff, administrative staff, nurses, volunteers, to mention a few, and we arestrongest when working together, collaboratively, in community, we will continue to grow not onlyas individuals but in community with each other, working towards a common goal. That goal is thatour students have a developed understanding of who they are and what they believe,  with pathways of success in their lives and the contemporary world, and they have a desire to add to thecharacter of their community.

Obedience is better than sacrifice 1 Samuel 15:22b, 23bListen! Obedience is better than sacrifice…For arrogance islike the evil of idolatry. Australia has done a great job. We’ve ‘flattened the curve’, by following the rules set out by thegovernment. Thankfully we are now seeing restrictions lifted. However, the underlying problem, the virus, is still present, we’ve just done a good job at reducingits impact. Sin can be thought of in a similar way. Saul, the first king of Israel, wanted to please the people. He wanted to make the people feel goodabout themselves. When he had an instruction he mostly followed it, he looked good because he wasvictorious. However, it was in the detail that his sin was exposed. He failed to fully follow the rulesand faces God’s judgement. Even when we had strong restrictions many of us would try to justify ‘bending the rules’, 1.5 metersanyone? Saul does the same. He claimed he was breaking the rules to please others, he thought heknew better. Yet, he forgets that pleasing others will not please God. Samuel, the prophet then uttersthe famous words, ‘Obedience is better than sacrifice’. Fortunately, there is one person who did perfectly obey. Jesus came into the world and alwaysobeyed God. In his obedience he died on a cross for the disobedient. Those who trust in him can beconsidered obedient. This is true even though the underlying problem of sin is still present. I pray as we return to more normal operations that the underlying reality of the virus would not beforgotten. Even more significantly that we would know the underlying problem of our disobedienceof God and trust in his son. Over the past week students across the Junior School have been given the opportunity to explorethe concept of reconciliation. We have talked about how reconciliation means making things right.The first step in this journey is understanding. We need to grow our understanding of Australia’s FirstPeoples, their culture and their values. We have been exploring this through reading stories byIndigenous authors, learning Aboriginal languages through Little Yarns and creating artworks thatrepresent community and coming together from far and wide into to a shared journey movingforward. We are in this together and together we have the opportunity to share and grow as one. Indoing so we create an opportunity for a community of empowerment for all students at Arndellbuilding belonging and relationships for Christ’s glory.

We in the library are very excited to see all our students back on campus. Our library lessons havebeen happening this term for Years 3-6. Prep-2 have still been visiting to borrow and read. A reminder email was sent out recently regarding overdue books. We understand that because of thecurrent situation students may not have been able to return books as due. As we transition back toon-campus learning it would be great if these books could start to be returned. On Wednesday 27th May our Junior School participated in the National Simultaneous Storytimeevent. This year the event had over 1 million participants nationwide. The idea behind the event isthat at 11am students all read the same book, so we end up with over 1 million students all readingthe same book at the same time. This year’s book was called Whitney and Britney Chicken Divas andit was read by Emma Watkins (yellow wiggle). Below are a few photos of some of our classes enjoyingthe story and creating their own crafts.

In Visual Arts this term, Year 5 are enjoying discovering their inner photographer. After taking aphoto, the students have been using the app Snapseed to add different effects to their shot. Theseare just some of the many amazing collages that they have created!

The last few weeks have proven to be a challenge for our Year 6 cohort, however we have been mostimpressed with their resilience and desire to continue their learning. Students have been focusingtheir attention on the wonderful culture and landscape of Japan, along with exploring the terribleeffects of earthquakes caused by the movement of the Earth’s tectonic plates. Students have beencompleting informative texts about traditional and modern Japanese homes and have beenmesmerized by the technologically advanced toilets! Year 6 have received their Year 6 Shirts for the year and they look fantastic! Also, the students havebeen continuing various elements of their Student Service Program by mulching and planting 30plants in the Year 6 garden and vegetable patch. We look forward to the excellent events that will prepare Year 6 for their transition to Senior School.Keep up the great work Year 6!

During this online learning process, it’s been difficult to think outside the box when it comes toteaching Visual Arts and Photography from a distance. It has made the Visual Arts Department reallythink about this challenge and how to be creative in the way we set up our lessons. We have been impressed to say the least on how well our students have responded to this new wayof learning. They have shown great courage to give the distance artmaking process a red hot go! Here are some examples of what some of our Photography and Visual Arts students have achieved sofar. Year 10 Photography have been working on themes that are related to Nature. They have beenworking on light painting techniques and Macro Photography. Year 9 Photography have been learning the fundamentals of Photography and Year 7 are learningabout Cubism.
