    I. INTRODUCTION

    1.1 General

    This geotechnical factual report presents the results of Soil Investigation Services for theProposed Additions and Alteration and Upgrading of Nan ChiauPrimary School, to be developed byMis Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan on lot 1025W, MK2l, at Anchorvale Link: (Figure 1.1).

    According to the information provided by the Engineer, Mis Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner (SEAsia) Pte Ltd, the proposed works comprises the demolition of one (1) teaching block (A3), minor A&Aworks in existing canteen area and construction of one (1) 6-storeys teaching block and an indoor sporthall. Figure 1.2 shows the proposed development plan. The project site is bounded by Anchorva1e Linkon West and HDB apartment blocks (Anchorvale Groove) on North, East and South. At the time of siteinvestigation, the project site was an existing school site.

    1.2 Scope ofWork

    The scope of work for the geotechnical engineering service of this project is summarised asfollows: -

    (1) Appointing a drilling contractor to drill five (5) exploratory boreholes including soil andwater sampling works and installation of five (5) water standpipes.

    (2) Co-ordination and supervision offield investigation and instrument installation works.

    (3) Monitoring of groundwater level during the course of investigation.

    (4) Conducting laboratory tests for determination of parameters required for geotechnicalanalysis.

    (5) Engineering interpretation of subsoil and groundwater conditions, engineering analysis andpreparation of geotechnical reports including the following items.

    II. FIELD INVESTIGATION

    2.1 FieldExploration

    The field exploration program for the Proposed Additions and Alteration and Upgrading of NanChiau Primary School at Anchorvale Link started on 15 April 2010 and completed on 29 April 2010. Atotal number of five (5) boreholes were drilled to depth of 39.42m to 51.38m below the existing groundsurface (Figure 2.1). Rotary wash boring was carried out for the project as more representativeundisturbed samples and more reliable in-situ tests could be obtained. The drilling and sampling workswere carried out by Mis Grouting Engineers Pte Ltd, under the supervision of Mis Moh and Associates(S) Pte Ltd.

    During drilling, Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) and split spoon sampling were carried out inaccordance with BS5930 at 105mto 3.0m intervals or at changes of subsoil strata excluding depths whereundisturbed sampling was carried out. Representative samples were taken from the split spoon sampler

    ill. LABORATORY TESTING

    3.1 General

    Laboratory tests were performed on selected soil samples to determine physical properties, shearstrength characteristics, compressibility characteristics and chemical contents of different soil layers.Chemical contents analyses were also carried out for groundwater sample collected from the installedwater standpipes. All these tests were carried out in MANs laboratory except for chemical contentanalyses, which were conducted by Mis Lab Services Pte Ltd. The total number and type of testsperformed are listed in Table 3.1.

    The following sections give a brief description of each type oftests carried out.

    3.2.3 Determination of Specific Gravity

    The specify gravity of the soil grains is determined by comparing the unit weight of the soilgrains with the unit weight of the distilled and de-aired water. The specific gravity test isconducted in accordance with BS1377 PART 2 :1990 Method 8.

    3.2.4 Determination of Atterberg Limits

    Atterberg Limits, i.e. Plastic Limit (PL) and Liquid Limit (LL), are water content where thebehaviour of a soil sample changes and is very important in soil classification. At the watercontent below the Plastic Limit, the soil behaves like in a "solid" state. At the water contentbeyond the Liquid Limit, the soil behaves as if in the "liquid" state. The difference of watercontent between the Plastic Limit and the Liquid Limit is termed as Plasticity Index (PD.The determination of the Atterberg Limits is conducted in accordance with BS 1377: PART2: 1990 Methods 4 and 5.

    3.2.5 Grain Size Analysis

    For coarse-grained soils, the grain SIze distribution of the soil is determined from

    3.3.1.2 Unconsolidated-undrained Triaxial Compression (UU) TestsFor UU tests, the soil samples were sheared in undrained condition under an appliedconfining pressure without allowing soil consolidation. One stage of shearing was carriedout for each UU test. The UU test is conducted in accordance with BS1377 Part 7:1990Method 8.

    3.4 Compressibility Characteristics

    One-dimensional consolidation tests were conducted on samples of fine-grained soil to evaluatetheir compressibility characteristics, such as coefficient of consolidation (Cc), compression index (Cc)and preconsolidation pressure (Pc).

    Specimens for consolidation test were prepared from 30mm to 40mm thick slice of undisturbedsample. The outer edge of the slice was trimmed to a diameter slightly larger than the diameter ofoedometer ring. The sharp end of the oedometer ring was then pressed into the trimmed sample carefully.The soil specimen was trimmed at the top and at the bottom of the oedometer ring by using a wire-saw.

    IV. SITE AND SUBSOIL CONDITIONS

    4.1 General Geology

    The geological formation of the proposed development site and the surrounding regions are foundto be Alluvial Member (Ka), Transitional Member (Kt) and Old Alluvium as shown in Figure 4.1 whichis extracted from the "Geology of Singapore" published by Defence Science & Technology Agency(DSTA) in 2009. The geological formation is described as follows: -

    KALLANG FORMATIONAlluvial Member (Ka)A variable terrestrial sediment ranging from pebble beds through sand, muddy sand, and clayto peat. The member is usually unconsolidated but lightly consolidated beds may be found.

    4.3 Subsoil Condition

    For the convenience of interpretation, simplified soil profiles that are interpolated from theavailable soil investigation results are presented in Figures 4.3(a) to 4.3(c). Layout of soil profile isshown in Figure 4.2. It should be emphasised, however, that due to the various compositions ofgeological formation found at the present site, considerable judgements on the engineering characteristicsof the subsoil have been exercised in delineating these subsoil profiles.

    On the basis of a review on the available results of field investigation works and laboratory tests,the subsoil condition at the present site can be classified into the following six (6) layers inview of itsconsistency / relative density and physical properties of clayey I sandy soil.

    LAYER 1 [FILL] - Loose to medium dense, Clayey SAND with hardcores and medium stiff,Sandy CLAY

    This is a fill layer consisting of loose to medium dense, yellowish brown and grey Clayey SAND withhardcores and medium stiff, yellowish brown Sandy CLAY. This layer was found in all boreholes with

    4.4 Groundwater Conditions

    Five (S)water standpipes(WSP-l in BH-3, WSP-2 inBH-l, WSP-3 in BHA, WSP-4 inBH-2 andWSP-S in BH-5) were installed in selected during the course of soil investigation for the measurement ofgroundwater. Figure 4.7 shows the plot of groundwater level versus time observed in water standpipes,respectively during the soil investigation period.

    Measurements of water standpipe taken during period from 21 April 2010 to 11 May 2010showed groundwater level ranging between RL 111.Sm inBH-2 and RL Il2.0m in BH-4 on 11 May2010. However, due to the limitedmonitoring time, further observation is recommended to verify the true/ stable groundwater condition at the present site. Records of groundwater level measurements arepresented in Appendix C.4.S Chemical Contents of Soil and Water Samples

    The results of chemical contents analysis on selectedwater and soil samples (Table 3.6) indicatesthat the sulphate content (expressed as S03) of water sample collected from water standpipe is 0.S2g/1.

    V. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

    On the basis of the field and laboratory investigation results, detailed geotechnical analysis havebeen made for the proposed project. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations are made as follows:

The results of chemical contents analysis on selected water and soil samples (Table 3.6) indicatesthat the sulphate content (expressed as S03) of water sample collected from water standpipe is0.52g!L The total sulphate content of the soil is found ranging from 0.16% to 0.20% (averagevalue of 0.18 0.02%). These range of sulphate content found in the water sample and soilsamples are classified as the Class 1 or 2, as per Table 10.5 of Singapore Standard CP4:2003 interms of degree of exposure to sulphate attack to the concrete substructures. pH values of soil isranging from 4.62 to 7.78 (average value of 6.5 1.7) and pH value of groundwater is 6.48.
