The St. Agnes Award
In 2007, Bishop Murphy announced the creation of the St. Agnes Medal of service to lay people in our diocese. One individual, or married couple from each of the 133 parishes is chosen. Pastors from all parishes are asked to nominate lay people who unselfishly donate their time and talent to their parishes. Regina Friel received this year’s award from Holy Spirit Parish. Regina volunteers at our parish social ministry in multiple ways. She is an excellent worker for Christ’s vineyard. All her work is done behind the scenes and she is never looking to be recognized. Her only goal is to help those in need. With Bishop Murphy, and the good people of Holy Spirit Parish, I congratulate Regina for her generosity and her commitment to all parishioners of our parish and to all residents of New Hyde Park.

I will also take this as an opportunity to thank all volunteers of our parish. It is because of the hard work and dedication of our volunteers that we have such a wonderful parish. It is always important for each of us to stay focused on doing God’s work. A parish is not about any one group or individual, but about coming together to build up the Kingdom of God here on earth. I am still looking for two adult volunteers to help as hall monitors for our Thursday afternoon religious education classes. This is an easy, but important, job. We need an adult to sit on a chair at every doorway so no one can enter or exit the second floor school area without permission.
Last week we celebrated the Solemnity of All Saints. During our masses that day, and also at the Confirmation Mass a few weeks ago, we sang the Litany of the Saints, a beautiful prayer, where we name many of the saints, and ask them to pray for us. While the Litany does mention quite a few saints, it is of course, only a small selection of those we recognize as canonized saints.
We all have our ‘favorite’ saint….our go to saint when we have a special need or request. We often find that we identify with a particular saint, and it’s a good thing if we do, because these saints are offered to us as examples of people very much like ourselves, who struggled every day to remain faithful to the teaching of Jesus. We find that, for most of them, there were many failures along the way. They made mistakes, committed sin, just like all of us, but they never gave up. This got me to thinking about one saint in particular, a saint who in fact, one of our students picked for her confirmation name last week. That saint is Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans, and Patron of France.
Joan was born in 1412 in Domremy, France. She was the daughter of poor tenant farmers Jacques D’Arc and his wife Isabelle. Joan never travelled far from home, and she helped her parents look after the animals on the farm. Her mother also taught her to sew, and Joan apparently became a skilled seamstress. A national heroine of France, at age 18 she led the French army to victory over the British at Orléans. Captured a year later, Joan was burned at the stake as a heretic by the English and their French collaborators. She was canonized more than 500 years later, on May 16, 1920.
Joan was a most unlikely candidate for sainthood, at least the way we tend to think of saints. We usually think a saint is someone who never committed a sin, who never lost their temper, someone who spends the day smiling at everyone they meet. Most of them however were just like us. They went to school, went to work….. raised a family….. worried about health, money, relationships and so on. The difference in most cases, from us, is that in spite of all these issues, they worked on, and developed their relationship with God.
We tend to think that it must take an awful lot of work, this relationship with God idea. It does take a little time, but the most important factor is being open to God’s graces working in our life. Preparing ourselves to become saints…….and that’s what we are all called to do……doesn’t mean that we will never have a row with someone, doesn’t guarantee that life will always run smoothly, but it does guarantee us……..because Jesus promised us …….that there is a place for each of us in His Kingdom, if we are open to His grace.
Jesus tells us in John’s Gospel, that “everyone who sees the Son, and believes in Him, may have eternal life.” So if we see Him…..if we believe in Him…….let’s get to work earning that seat at the heavenly banquet. That’s where God wants us to be. Very often we console ourselves and one another with the phrase that God will meet us ‘where we are at’……..which may well be true……..but just because He meets us there……..that doesn’t mean that that’s the place where He wants us to stay.
May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen

Clothing Drive
On behalf of the needy neighbors we serve, your St. Vincent de Paul Conference is having a Cloth-
ing Drive on Sunday, November 15th. A St. Vincent de Paul Society truck will be in the north parking lot from 7:30 am to 1 pm to accept your donations of clothing. Last year our parish was able to collect over 2,000 pounds of clothing to
meet the increased demands the Society receives as we approach the colder winter. Our Social Ministry office gives a voucher to anyone who
comes to us in need, free of charge. Please take this opportunity to check your closets for items
you really don’t need which could make a real dif-ference to the poor who are in need. Thank you.
