The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica Sunday, November 09, 2014
Ezekiel 47: 1-2, 8-9, 12; 1 Corinthians 3: 9c-11, 16-17; John 2:13-22
All Saints Day is officially the Solemnity of All Saints and also called All Hallows or Hallowmas, often shortened to All Saints, is a solemnity celebrated on 1 November in honor of all the saints, known and unknown.
This day commemorates all those who have attained the beatific vision in Heaven. In the Roman Catholic Church, the next day, All Souls' Day, specifically commemorates the departed faithful who have not yet been purified and reached heaven. Catholics celebrate All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day in the fundamental belief that there is a prayerful spiritual communion between those in the state of grace who have died and are either being purified in purgatory or are in Heaven and those who are the living.
All Souls' Day commemorates the faithful departed. The Roman Catholic celebration is associated with the doctrine that the souls of the faithful who at death have not been cleansed from the temporal punishment due to venial sins and from attachment to mortal sins cannot immediately attain the beatific vision in heaven, and that they may be helped to do so by prayer and by the sacrifice of the Mass. In other words, when they died, they had not yet attained full sanctification and moral perfection, a requirement for entrance into Heaven. This sanctification is carried out posthumously in Purgatory.
The official name of the celebration is "The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed".

From the From the From the From the Deacon's LaptopDeacon's LaptopDeacon's LaptopDeacon's Laptop:::: All Saints Day and All Soul’s Day I have been asked numerous time “Why do you Catholics worship Mary and the saints?” I have to tell
them we don’t worship them, we ask for their intercession.
I give them an everyday example. When my boys were younger and they did something that they
weren’t supposed to do. I would “put them on report” (remember I was military) and send them to their
“quarters” (their room). (In those days there weren’t TV, radios, cell phone, IPads or computers in their
rooms.) As they passed their mother, they would say “Dad is being too hard on me!!” Their mother would
intercede for them by saying to me, out of their hearing, “Don’t you think that the punishment might not
fit the crime?” I would probably let them stew for a bit and then let them out of their room. In a way this
is what we do when we asked for Mary and the saints to intercede for us with God. They are right there,
up close and personal. So they have the ear of God and can be our best defenders. They can said “Don’t
you think you are being too hard on……?” So we need always to use them to our advantage and “pray
unceasingly” to Mary and the saints asking for their assistance.
All Saints Day gives us the opportunity to ask all those in heaven to intercede for us even if we don’t
know the names of those who are there. This may include our relatives, friends and neighbors who have
gone before us.
On the other side of the coin, I get asked frequently “Why do we pray for the dead people (nothing can
change their situation) and especially on All Soul’s Day.” Our belief and particularly on All Soul’s Day is
associated with the doctrine that the souls of the faithful who at death have not been cleansed from the
temporal punishment due to venial sins and from attachment to mortal sins cannot immediately attain
the beatific vision in heaven, and that they may be helped to do so by prayer and by the sacrifice of the
Mass. In other words, when they died, they had not yet attained full sanctification and moral perfection, a
requirement for entrance into Heaven. This sanctification is carried out posthumously in Purgatory. So
these prayers are for the dead, who could be our relatives, friends and neighbors, who haven’t quite
made the final journey to see God face to face.
In another part of the bulletin you will see more information about All Saints’ Day and All Soul’s Day.
This is part of informing all of us about what we believe and to prepare ourselves for that Personal
Encounter with Jesus and our work in the area of the New Evangelization that Pope Francis wants us to
accomplish.
So pray to all the saints for their intercession and for all those who have gone before us for their
release from their “temporary” situation.

Welcome to Saints Peter and Paul DVD
There will be a showing of a brief DVD of recent events and Special Mass's shown on the big screen about 10 to 15 minutes prior to each mass. This is to show parishioners what events the church has presented in the last few months. The DVD will be changed periodically to show newer events and any other special Mass's that took place. This should encourage parishioners to know what we are doing and invite them to participate in future events.

To ensure our parishioners have correctly formed consciences, we offer what we believe is an essential three-part framework, which we have shared with you before previous elections. We invite you to consider this framework prayerfully as you prepare to make important decisions this November and beyond.
• Many issues are important. “Every human being has a right to life, the fundamental right that makes all other rights possible, and a right to access to those things required for human decency – food and shelter, education and employment, health care and housing, freedom of religion and family life.” Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, para. 49. This consistent ethic of life provides the proper moral foundation for our engagement in political life. As Catholics, we must seek the best ways to respond to the many needs of our neighbors, at every stage of life and in every condition. Indeed, we must be attentive to all issues that affect human life and dignity and the common good.
• Not all issues have equal moral weight. Some practices are intrinsically evil – that is, always incompatible with love of God and neighbor. “The moral obligation to oppose intrinsically evil acts has a special claim on our consciences and our actions.” Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, para. 37. Examples include abortion (which occurs more than a million times each year in the U.S.), euthanasia, human cloning, destructive research on human embryos, genocide, torture, racism, and the targeting of noncombatants in acts of terror or war. Not all of these issues occur in the context of the present election, but many, such as abortion, do. It is also essential to note that God is the author of marriage, and therefore marriage has a built-in design and purpose that cannot be redefined. The institution of marriage, rooted in the natural law, is integral to the common good because it is the building block of the family and society, despite what the legal courts decide.
• When the issue is whether to protect or deny the fundamental right to life, it outweighs other matters. Among acts that are intrinsically evil, those that directly attack life itself, the clearest example of which is abortion, are the foremost violations of human dignity. The right to life is the foundation upon which all other human rights are based and without which no other right could possibly exist. The right to life is indeed our first right, and protecting life to the maximum degree possible must be our highest priority.
Voters who want to know more about candidates than what they see on TV ads and yard signs are encouraged to check out Know the Positions of the U.S. Senate Candidates (vacatholic.org/documents/VACC2014Candidatesv4.pdf) The Virginia Catholic Conference compiled this resource from policies, public statements, official and campaign websites and other sources to help voters understand where the candidates in Virginia's U.S. Senate race stand on issues important to many Catholics. The issues appear in alphabetical order for informational purposes only and do not represent a complete list of important issues. The Senate race side-by-side comparison is the last of several important pre-election resources issued by the Conference, including a statement (and en Espanol) from Bishop DiLorenzo and Bishop Loverde on principles to consider before voting, suggested questions to ask congressional candidates before Election Day, and interviews with the three candidates for the 7th District congressional seat formerly held by U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor. These items are available on our website.
