Veterans Day is November 11th

St. Rose of Lima will honor our brave Veteran’s and Active Duty Military at a special Mass on Sunday, November 12th at 9:00 a.m. Our own Fr. Jim Maher (a Navy veteran) will be the celebrant who will be presenting a gift to all active duty and retired military members. A light reception will follow in the rectory backyard. The St. Rose community extends their heartfelt thanks to Veterans, as well as those who currently serve our nation in the military. We hope that you will join us in the celebration of the Mass, as we thank you for your service to our great nation.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION What is the name of the pope's cathedral? If you said the Vatican, or St. Peter's, you were off by a few miles, since the answer is the Basilica of St. John, the Lateran, the "Mother Church" of all the churches of the world and the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. It takes its name from the Lateran family, the Trumps of their day, who somehow ran afoul of the Emperor Nero. He seized all their property, including their vast Roman palace and estate. We don't know how Plautius displeased Nero so badly, but eventually all the Lateran property came to Constantine, the first Christian emperor, through his wife, Fausta. Early in the fourth century, when Christianity was at last legalized, Constantine gave the property to the church. Soon the great meeting halls were expanded and adapted. Over the centuries, the church building has been sacked by armies, ruined by fire, torn down, and rebuilt. The oldest and most unchanged part of the Lateran is a vast, separate baptistery with steps leading down to a huge green basalt pool. Imagine what a triumphal moment the dedication of this public church building was for a community that had worshiped in secret for so long! This Thursday's feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica is really about the tradition of consecrating space for worship, and so by extension, a feast for your parish church building and, given the beautiful second reading, for its baptistery as well. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Catholic but not Confirmed? Adult Confirmation

Wisdom: God's Vision for Life Scripture and the Tradition of the Catholic Church provide an abundance of wisdom, though it can often be chal-lenging to apply it to our lives. In this study, Jeff Cavins and Thomas Smith examine biblical wisdom as it relates to daily life. Drawing on the wisdom literature of the Bible—Proverbs, Wisdom, Sirach, and Ecclesiastes—Wisdom will teach you how to actively seek out sound guidance and increase your sense of peace in navigating life. In everything from friendships to finances, from making decisions to attaining peace of mind, Scripture offers a vi-sion for happiness and well-being. With this program, you will learn how to gather, gain, and grow in wisdom, and you will experience the joy it brings to your life.

In this program, you will: Discover what wisdom is (and what it isn’t!) Learn new habits for increasing wisdom in your daily life Gain confidence, through role models and practice, in living according to God’s vision.

Have you received Baptism, but are still in need of the sac-raments of Eucharist and/or Confirmation? Sessions for those preparing to receive these sacraments in the Spring of 2018 have begun. If you would like to complete your initia-tion into the Church it’s not too late! Please call the Office of Faith Formation 805-915-4621 to inquire.

Adult Faith Formation Do you want to learn more about your Catholic Faith, but don’t know where to start? Do you have questions, but don’t know where to get the answers? Do you want to lead a more fulfilling prayer life, but don’t know how to begin? Do you desire to live a life of discipleship, but

don’t know exactly what that means? Do you just want to have a faith-filled discussion with other Catholics? Then come and join us for Adult Faith Formation EVERY Wednesday evenings from 7:30 – 9:00 pm in Room 9 of the School. Come as you are, and when you can, all are wel-come. This will be on-going adult catechesis. For more in-formation call the Office of Faith Formation at 526-5513.

Safety tips for parents traveling with children

Traveling with kids during the holidays can be a challenge, especially with the added worry of safety thrown into the mix. Here are some suggestions parents can use to help ensure their children’s safety while traveling: 1. Prior to leaving on your holiday, remind children

about your family safety procedures for dealing with strangers and what to do if they get lost.

2. Keep a recent photo of children handy, also a photocopy of passports kept in a safe place or with a relative that can fax it to you in case of loss.

3. If you label children’s clothing, make sure the label is inside so strangers are not able to learn child’s name.

For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Clarity of Scripture

The Protestant doctrine of the Clarity of Scripture (also referred to as the Perspecuity of Scripture) posits that all things that are necessary for salvation are clear ly understood by the educated as well as the uneducated. It states that the Holy Spirit gives everybody an equal understanding about matters concerning salvation. As Catholics, we understand that there are many things in Scripture that are indeed clear and straightforward. However, like the Ethiopian eunuch on Acts 8:26-39, we understand that not all aspects of Scripture are as easily understood as others – or by all people. In the story of the Ethiopian eunuch, the Apostle Philip met him on the road from Jerusalem. The eunuch was reading the Scriptures and Philip asked him if he understood what he was reading. He told Philip, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” (Acts 8:31). The story of the eunuch is the inspired Word of God – and we are explicitly told in that story that not everybody understands all of Scripture equally. The Church is the guardian of the Holy Deposit of the Faith (2 Tim. 1:14). According to the Catechism, Scripture must be read “within the living tradition of the whole Church.” Unfortunately, too many people over the centuries have read it with the intentions of starting their own “church”. As St. Peter tells us under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit: “Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God” (2 Pet. 1:20-21). The main flaw of the doctrine of Perspecuity of Scripture is evident in the almost 50,000 disjointed and perpetually-splintering Protestant denominations that exist today. If Scripture is so clear that anybody can understand it, then why are there so many denominations - ALL claiming to have the “truth”. The catechism tells us: 134 All Sacred Scripture is but one book, and this one book is Christ, "because all divine Scripture speaks of Christ, and all divine Scripture is fulfilled in Christ" In short, the Bible is a Catholic Book – written FOR Catholics BY Catholics. It is not something that is to be personally dissected and individually interpreted. Because it is a Church book – it takes Christ’s Church to interpret it. St. Augustine, Doctor of the Church and one of the greatest thinkers the Church has ever produce wisely stated, “I would not believe in the Gospel, had not the authority of the Catholic Church already moved me.”
