ICAR-NDRI organized 16 th Convocation on 10 th March 2018 and Hon’ble Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Shri Radha Mohan Singh graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and gave away the degrees and delivered the Convocation Address. During his address to students, he congratulated the students and said that NDRI is providing a large number of trained young professionals in dairy production, processing and management to the nation. Expressing satisfaction at the production of milk in the country, he said that since last 20 years, India continues to be the largest milk producer in the world and the credit goes to the research institutions like NDRI for catering to the technological and human resource requirement of the dairy sector. He said that in past few years, various Government schemes and initiatives have brought about remarkable growth in animal husbandry. In the last 6 years, milk production increased from 121.8 million tons in 2010-11 to 165.4 million tons in 2016-17. In first three years of this period up to 2013-14, the increase was 13%, thereafter the increase is over 20%. Per capita availability increased by only 9% from 2010-11 to 2013-14, the increase was 15% from 2013-14 to 2016-17. Emphasising the commitment of the Government in Dairy Sector, he said that National Mission on Bovine Productivity with allocation of Rs. 825 crore was initiated for genetic upgradation. of cattle and buffalo population through delivery of breeding inputs at farmers’ doorstep. He expressed satisfaction this Institute is maintaining three very good Indian dairy breeds, Sahiwal, Tharparkar and Rathi here at Karnal campus and also Maland Gidda at Bangalore campus.

Elaborating the Govt. Scheme in Dairy Sector, the Minister said that the Govt. has

launched ‘Rashtriya Gokul Mission” that aims to conserve and develop indigenous

breeds. In this regard, 20 Gokul Grams have been approved in 13 states which will act

as centers for development and protection of indigenous breeds. The Govt. has also

established two National Kamdhenu Breeding Center in the country at Itarsi and

Hoshangabad (Northern region) and Chntaladevi and Nellore (in Southern region).

On this occasion, degree Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) was conferred on Dr.

Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary DARE and DG, ICAR by NDRI Deemed

University.

Dr. R.R.B. Singh, Director, NDRI presented the progress report on the significant

achievements made by the institute during the past year. He also congratulated all the

awardees, teachers and parents. He said that Institute is offering Doctoral and Master

courses in fifteen different disciplines. In addition, the Institute also offers the

prestigious degree course leading to award of B. Tech. (Dairy Technology). At

present, 928 students are undergoing various academic programmes including 352 girl

students and 5 foreign students (1 in Doctoral Programme, 3 in Masters Programme

and 1 in Graduate programme) from Syria, Afghanistan and Nigeria. In the 16th

Convocation we are awarding degrees to 105 PhD including 1 foreign student, 146

Masters and 27 B.Tech students. In 2016-17, the average salary offered was Rs. 4.80

and Rs. 6.00 lakhs per annum for UG and PG students, respectively. He further said

that has five collaborative international research projects with UK, USA, Egypt,

Denmark and Kenya. NDRI has filed 4 patents and 2 patents have been granted. A

total number of 556 research papers were published in the current year (2017- 18).

On this occasion, Chief Guest presented Best Teacher Award to Dr. Rajan Sharma,

Principal Scientist in recognition of his academic excellence.

During this occasion, Dr. R.R.B. Singh presented Gold Medal for highest Marks

during Ph.D in the Production, Processing and Management Group to Dr. Sunil

Kumar, Dr. Ritu Chakravarty and Dr. Showkat Ahmad Bhat, respectively. Gold Medal

for highest Marks during Master in the Production, Processing and Management

Group presented to Ms. Mitasha Mehta, Ms. Meera K. and Ms. Nancy Talwar,

respectively.

‘Certificate for Best Thesis Research Work’ during PhD programme were also

presented to Ms. Rani Alex, Ms. Priyanka Saini and Mr. Bishwa Bhaskar Choudhary

in the Production, Processing and Management Group, respectively.

‘Certificate for Best Thesis Research Work’ during Master’s programme were also

presented to Ms. Shruti Shandilya, Ms. Swathi P. Anand and Mr. Vikash Kumar in the

Production, Processing and Management Group, respectively.

For overall contribution in research and teaching by the faculty, Animal Biochemistry

Division was adjudged as Best Division.

Dr. Suneel Kumar Onteru of NDRI received the Dr. S.K. Sirohi Memorial Award

for his contribution in the research.

Dr. Bimlesh Mann Joint Director (Research), NDRI coordinated the whole programme

of convocation.
