    FLAMES 2016-17 PLAYER BIOSmatchup notesNOTES AND ANECDOTES - LIBERTY VS. SHIPPENSBURG

    • Shippensburg went 24-7 last season, winning the PSAC East Division title and advancing to the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship. However, the Raiders lost all fi ve starters from that team.

    • Despite the eff orts of Ariel Jones, who leads the nation's freshmen in scoring at 22.1 ppg, Shippensburg is 1-9 this season, including 0-5 in PSAC play.

    • Kristy Trn took over as Shippensburg's head coach in 1999-2000, the same year Carey Green took the helm at Liberty. Like Green, Trn is her school's winningest coach in program history, with 323 wins to her credit.

    • This is Trn's 29th straight season involved with Shippens-burg women's basketball, including four years as a player (1989-93), one year as a volunteer assistant (1993-94) and fi ve years as an assistant coach (1994-99) before her cur-rent tenure as head coach.

    • Liberty Swimming & Diving Head Coach Jake Shellenberger graduated from Shippensburg in 2005, following four years as part of the Raiders' swimming program.

    • Although Saturday marks the Lady Flames' fi rst-ever meet-ing with Shippensburg in women's basketball, Liberty has faced the Raiders in other sports. The Flames are 8-7 versus Shippensburg in baseball, 1-0 in football, 1-0 in men's bas-ketball, 0-1 in softball and 2-1 in volleyball.

    • Liberty picked up its fi rst win of the 2013-14 season, using its signifi cant size advantage to outrebound Kutztown, 52-29.

    • The Lady Flames got signifi cant contributions from all fi ve starters, including Ashley Rininger (16 points, 10 rebounds), Emily Frazier (10 points, 7 assists), Sadalia Ellis (10 points, 5 assists), Mickayla Sanders (9 points, 3 three-pointers) and Catherine Kearney (7 points, 10 rebounds).

    • The game marked Liberty's fi rst road game against a non-Division I opponent since Jan. 6, 1994 (Cedarville).

    PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES

    • Liberty has survived a grueling travel schedule to begin the 2017-18 season, playing six road/neutral games in four dif-ferent states (Iowa, Massachusett s, Michigan, Virginia).

    • The Lady Flames spent 11 total nights in seven diff erent ho-tels in the 17 days between Nov. 9-25.

    • Liberty has fl own through seven diff erent airports already this season, including Atlanta, Des Moines, Detroit, Dulles, Hartford, O'Hare and Raleigh/Durham. The Lady Flames will next fl y out of Charlott esville Sunday morning, departing for the UMKC Roo Holiday Classic, Tuesday and Wednesday in Kansas City, Mo.

    • Liberty had not played its fi rst fi ve games away from the Vines Center since 2007-08, when the Lady Flames tipped off the year with six straight road/neutral contests.

    LADY FLAMES AT THE VINES CENTER

    • Liberty is 2-0 at home this season and is looking for its fi rst 3-0 start at the Vines Center since the 2012-13 Lady Flames opened the year with fi ve straight home wins.

    • This is the Lady Flames' 28th season of basketball at the Vines Center.

    • The Lady Flames are 278-73 all-time at the facility, including 207-37 under Head Coach Carey Green.

    • Liberty's only home game against a PSAC foe was an 80-79 victory over West Chester on Jan. 18, 1988 at Liberty Gym.

    • Liberty is 1-8 all-time against Pitt -Johnstown, but all nine meetings came before the Mountain Cats joined the PSAC.

    Green paced the Lady Flames in points (12.3 ppg) and re-bounds (8.1 rpg) in 2016-17, earning Big South Freshman of the Year and VaSID State Rookie of the Year honors. She also became the fi rst eight-time Big South Freshman of the Week in conference history.

    STELLAR SOPHOMORES

    Keyen Green, Iva Ilic and Ola Makurat all made the Big South All-Freshman team a year ago, making Liberty the only NCAA Division I women's basketball team in the nation with a trio of all-freshman honorees in 2016-17.

    Adding in the production of classmates Kierra Johnson-Gra-ham and Lela Sellers, the Lady Flames' fi ve sophomore re-turnees accounted for 58.9 percent of the team's scoring last season and are scoring 49.4 percent of the points in 2017-18.

    Sophomore Iva Ilic represented Croatia in the FIBA U20 Women's European Championship Division B during July in Eilat, Israel, helping her team capture the bronze medal.

    INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR

    The Lady Flames' 2017-18 roster features three foreign-born players, including sophomores Iva Ilic (Croatia) and Ola Mak-urat (Poland) and junior transfer Melis Ucar (Turkey).

    This marks Liberty's most international players since 2006-07 (Roli-Ann Nikagbatse of Germany, Karolina Piotrkiewicz of France and Egle Smigelskaite of Lithuania).

    Ashtyn Baker has opened her collegiate career in style, earn-ing Big South Freshman of the Week honors on Nov. 13 and Dec. 4.

    Baker is following in the footsteps of teammates Keyen Green and Ola Makurat, who combined for nine honors in 2016-17.

    Sophomore Ola Makurat made 25 straight free throw at-tempts between Feb. 4-Dec. 2, 2017. She fi nished one away from Jaymee Fisher-Davis' program record of 26 in a row.
