Year two excursionToday year 2 students will be walking toBalls Head Reserve to develop anunderstanding of the features of a naturalenvironment and to observe and attainevidence of how people have impactedon this area. This excursion will assiststudents in developing their

understanding of the environment andsustainability.

Card ArtEach year the students at North SydneyDemonstration School have createdartworks which have been made intobeautiful cards that may be purchased aspart of the school’s fund raising. Thisyear, the choices have been extended toinclude cards, calendars, magnets andpuzzles on which your child’s artworkswill be printed. All profits go back into theschool to provide resources for ourstudents. Order forms for Fundraising Artwill be sent home on Monday and placedon the website. Samples will be displayedin the office foyer and in the open area inthe next week.

DEBATING NEWS

Year 5 debaters are taking part in Ryde district ‘friendly debating’. This gives them anopportunity to hone their speaking skills in a non competitive environment before taking part inmore serious debating in Year 6. Over the course of this term interested and talented studentswill debate various schools in the area.

Jake Meyer, Ronahi Demirbag, Abby Donaldson and Kyana Chan did our school proud againstHunters Hill Public School last week as the Negative in “Australia needs a new flag”. Theycertainly came up with some excellent points and were definitely the better team. Next weekSiobhan Bennett, James Priest and Kristen Sales will take on Beauty Point Public School withthe same topic, this time as affirmative. Following that Harry Landers, Nathan Culhane andRaymond Wu will take on St Ives Park as the Negative with “Sport people make good rolemodels”. Well done to all these fine speakers.

CHESS REPORT

The Junior Chess Competition was held last Thursday and I will be doing a comprehensivereport in future weeks. The winner of Boys Junior Section (Years K-3) was Finn Claridge of2MT. Finn upset the tourney favourite Ben Niphaporn in the Semis and then defeated HugoCornish of 2TH in the Final. Congratulations to Finn, and to Hugo for coming second.

We had a disappointing turnout in the girls section this year, with the final being held betweenKatelyn Dudley 1ES and Gemma Flinders KNC with Kately defeating her younger opponent totake out the title of Junior Girls Champion. Well done girls!

Next Thursday we will be holding the Seniors Boys and Girls Chess Championships straightafter morning assembly. Make sure you have all been practising.

BOOK WEEK ACTIVITIES

DRESS UP PARADE with GOLD COIN DONATIONTUESDAY 24TH AUGUST - DRESS UP PARADE to celebrate Book Week 2010. Dress up asyour favourite book character and bring the book from which their character is chosen. If this isnot possible the name of the book on a piece of cardboard would be wonderful. Use yourimagination and have fun.

We will be having a GOLD COIN collection for the charity ROOM TO READ which buildslibraries and schools in developing nations. Books are their focus to help educate children.Thank you in advance for your generosity.

COLOURING IN COMPETITIONI have had a number of beautifully coloured entries into our Book Week competition. Studentscan get the entry from their class teacher or the library. Colour in and hand to Ms Williams byMONDAY 23rd August (9.00am - beginning of Week 6). The best two from each grade will win aprize of a book. All entries get a “lolly” book worm.

PREMIERS READING CHALLENGEThe Challenge is coming to an end with a record number of children having participated thisyear. Please log your reading records as soon as you can. Final date is 31st August.

BOOK WEEK SPEAKERSWe will be welcoming Kim Gamble and Anna Feinberg (creator of Tashi and Minton) to ourschool on Wed 1st September.

AUSTRALIAN GIRLS CHOIR AUDITIONS

Leaflets are available from outside the front office. Auditions will be held for all girlswith an interest in music and singing. Complete permission slip and bring with you on the day.Friday 27 August at 9.30am in the hall.

SAS Staff: Keeping schools Afloat

This week NSDS is recognising all the hard work our office and generalassistance staff put in. The school could not run as efficiently as it doeswithout the great people who run the office, look after the grounds and keep usall up to date! Finn and Olivia from the Student Executive interviewed JudithWatts and Cynthia Henderson from our office. The staff are celebrating SASweek on Wednesday with a morning tea.

Yes, I love it!

2. How long have you work at this school?

18 years.

3. What are some of the things that you have to do working in the office?

I check all the email accounts. I organise all the payments and I order the stock. I do first aid and evendrink coffee when someone buys it for me!

4. What do you enjoy doing the most in the office?

Probably talking with the children. I like children.

5. What is one of your favourite memories working at this school?

I like all the dress up days!

6. What’s the best thing about working at the Dem?

I like getting twelve weeks holiday because my children do not live in NSW and I can visit them! I also likethe interaction with the teachers, children and parents.

Art Exchange

The Dem is involved in an art exchange program with Er Lian Primary School in Shanghai, China.

Several Dem students’ artworks were selected to be sent to China as a part of this initiative. We in

turn have received artworks from students of Er Lian Primary School. These beautiful artworks are

now on display in the Open Area. Each of the Dem students whose artworks were sent to China will

soon be presented with a book in which their artwork is published. These students are Victoria Bliss,

Abigail Stuart, Mary Pang, Diya Thomas, Stella Fleeting, Claudia Maitland, Austin Brown, Sang Hee

Kim, Claudia Lin, Matthew Wang, Ganesh Sivagurunthan, Nadine Serhalawan, Leah Schirmer,

Andrew Czornyj, An Okumura, Raymond Xiao, Kristen Sales, Kara Wong, Alexander Kingsford-

Mortensen, Mark Huang and Emika Oiwa. Congratulations to Matthew, Nadine, Mary, Alexander

and Kristen who will also receive certificates for artworks of outstanding quality as judged by the

organising committee in China. Students of all ages interested in submitting quality artworks as a

part of this exchange should take their artworks to Mrs Buczko (3KB). Artworks, if selected, will not

be returned.

Dance - World Record Attempt and ‘Youth off the Streets’ charity

event

As an initiative of the Australian Dance Festival to get children involved in dance, students are

encouraged to participate in a World Record attempt for the largest group to do a ‘Hairspray’ dance

routine. The choreography is by Jason Coleman and is available online. Log on to

The attempt will take place in Sydney Square (in between Town Hall and St Andrews Cathedral in the

city) Saturday 4th September 7:30-8:30 am. This is a fundraiser for ‘Youth off the Streets’ with each

participant donating $1 at registration. Interested students have already met with Mrs Buczko to get

out their ‘jazz hands’ and a note will be sent home today. It is not a school excursion and students

will need to organise their own transport to/from the event and parents/carers are responsible for

their own children. If you want to team up with other families for transport etc email
