The 1975 Minutes of the Surry Baptist Association Are dedicated in loving memory of

THE REVEREND JOHN D. HEMINGWAY

Rev. John Douglas Hemingway, pastor of Holly Springs Baptist Church, Surry Association, died August 15, 1975. John D. was born in Bethel, N. C., May 17, 1927. He was the son of the late Dr. J. D. and Goldie Hemingway and was married to Rebecca Mobely of Robersonville, N. C. in January, 1949. He worked for Virginia Electric and Power Co. in Williamston, N. C. before entering the ministry. He was licensed to preach March 1952 and ordained April 26, 1953 in the First Baptist Church Robersonville, N. C. by Rev. Ralph E. Ferguson. He was a graduate of Chowan College, Murfreesboro, N. C.; William and Mary College, Norfolk, Va. and Southeastern Seminary, Wake Forest, N. C. He preached at Pinetown Baptist Church, Pinetown, N. C. and South Creek Baptist, South Creek, N. C. before accepting his first full-time pastorate at Eureka Baptist Church, Corapeake, N. C., remaining there nine years. Since then h e served Evergreen Baptist Church, Evergreen, N. C.; South Point Baptist Church, Belmont, N. C.; Holly Grove Baptist Church, Ahoskie, N. C. and Holly Springs Baptist Church, Mount Airy, N. C. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Ahoskie Masonic Lodge #684.

Surviving besides his widow, Rebecca, are a daughter, Jackie Leigh and a son, John Douglas Jr. Three brothers, Jack Hemingway of Dunn, N. C. and Fr ank and Edward Hemingway of Bethe l, N. C. a nd one siste r, Mrs. Lois Reade o f Be thel, N. C.

A funeral service was conducted Sunday afternoon August 17, 1975 at Holly Springs Church by Rev. Ralph E. Ferguson. A graveside service was held on Monday afternoon in Mar tin Memorial Gardens, Wi lliamston , N. C.
