Madama ButterflyEast meets West with devastating consequences in Puccini’s tragic romanceLove quickly turns to betrayal and sacrifice in this story of an innocent young Geisha and a dashing American officer. Rich with exotic colour and memorable melodies, this seductive score conceals a dramatic blade that cuts to the heart.

Der RosenkavalierA timeless production of Strauss’s operatic masterpieceForced to choose between duty and desire, the Marschallin must surrender her young lover to another woman. The lilting rhythm of the waltz is the heartbeat of Strauss’s bittersweet Viennese comedy.

Giulio CesareDavid McVicar’s much-loved production makes a triumphant returnPolitical intrigue meets romance in this vivid retelling of the classic story of Caesar and Cleopatra. Wit, energy and sumptuous designs bring Handel's tune-filled score to joyous life in this all-singing, all-dancing staging.

Pelléas et MélisandeA mysterious woman, a forbidden love, a family torn apartWhen Prince Golaud meets the beautiful Mélisande, he falls instantly in love. So does his brother Pelléas. Debussy’s only opera explores this tragic love-triangle in a uniquely atmospheric and evocative score.

SaulBarrie Kosky’s sensational staging of Handel’s oratorio marries spectacle and psychologyA Lear-like king descends into madness in a Biblical drama of Shakespearean scope. Thrilling choruses and rich orchestral textures combine with bold choreography in a striking theatrical fusion of old and new.

VanessaA rare opportunity to see Samuel Barber’s emotionally-charged, Pulitzer Prize-winning operaWhen past and present loves collide, the aftershocks threaten to shatter one family’s fragile world. Overflowing with melody, Vanessa is one of the 20th century’s most beautiful, lyrical scores, a work of cinematic intensity.

Three of our Festival 2018 operas were written around the beginning of the 20th century and yet they couldn't be any more different from each other, characterising their diverse cultural origins. In contrast, we also present two of Glyndebourne's most successful productions of Handel's works and one new production from the vast field of American opera, to provide an intriguing counterpoint to the season.

It is a great privilege and responsibility to be choosing titles for an operatic season that will both enrich and entertain our Glyndebourne audiences. We thank our Members for their continued support and invite all visitors to join the Glyndebourne family for world-class opera in our unique setting in the Sussex Downs.

When an innocent young Geisha meets an American naval officer she falls instantly and deeply in love. Giving up her family and her faith, she risks all in marriage to the dashing Lieutenant Pinkerton. But her fragile happiness cannot last. Soon love turns to abandonment and betrayal, and Butterfly is forced to make one final, agonising sacrifice.

Bursting with exotic colour and memorable melodies, Puccini’s seductive score conceals a dramatic blade that cuts to the heart. Compressing ‘great grief into small souls’, as the composer himself described it, Madama Butterfly is a classic love story that never fails to move – a tragic romance that sweeps you along in the intensity of its action. Blending authentic Japanese music with luscious European harmonies and orchestration, the opera is an irresistible fusion of East and West.

Puccini’s opera makes its Festival debut in Annilese Miskimmon’s thought-provoking production that updates the original turn-of-the-century setting to the 1950s, confronting the darker political and emotional currents of a work that acknowledges that there are some barriers too great for even love to conquer.

The Marschallin adores her lover Octavian. But, at nearly 20 years his senior, she knows that their affair cannot last. So when Octavian meets the beautiful Sophie, she must find a way to let him go. Can she keep Sophie from the clutches of her boorish cousin, the libidinous Baron Ochs, and ensure that young love is triumphant?

One of opera’s great romantic comedies, Der Rosenkavalier is a musical fantasy that tempers sweetness with satirical wit, farce with philosophy, humour with pathos. Brimming with youthful energy and passion, carried along on the lilting rhythms of the waltz, the voluptuous score paints a gilded vision of a fairytale Vienna. Romance is woven through every bar of a lyrical masterpiece that celebrates a world on the brink of change. From the opening aria to the ecstatic closing trio, Strauss’s opera glitters as brightly as the silver rose at its heart.

Richard Jones’s elegantly colourful production returns with an exciting new cast led by our original Marschallin soprano Kate Royal, conducted by Glyndebourne’s music director Robin Ticciati.

When Egypt’s seductive queen meets Rome’s powerful ruler, the stakes are high, both for politics and passion. Horrified by the brutal murder of his rival by Cleopatra’s brother Tolomeo, Cesare joins forces with Cleopatra to depose her unscrupulous sibling. But is their alliance one of love, lust or just mutual ambition?

Bollywood meets baroque in David McVicar’s legendary production – a Glyndebourne classic that brings all-singing, all-dancing energy to one of Handel’s greatest scores. Sumptuous designs that nod to Britain’s colonial history transform a tale of political intrigue into a dazzling spectacle, sweeping the audience up in its tangled web of power, revenge and romance.

The resourceful, complicated Cleopatra and smooth statesman Cesare are two of Handel’s most fascinating creations – characters whose music, by turns heart-breaking and ecstatic, includes so many of the composer’s finest arias. Charting a course from comedy to near-tragedy and back again, this is an opera whose pace never lets up.

This revival reunites many of the original team behind this spectacular production, including conductor William Christie and Sarah Connolly, who makes a triumphant return in the title role.

When Prince Golaud meets the mysterious Mélisande, he falls instantly in love with this beautiful, broken girl. So does his brother Pelléas. Cloaked in the darkness of the shadowy kingdom of Allemonde, this passionate love-triangle unfolds in hints and suggestions, glimpses and glances, elusive right up to its tragic conclusion.

Sharing the sensuous, dreamlike soundworld of Debussy’s La Mer and Prélude à l'après-midi d'un Faune, Pelléas et Mélisande celebrates the colour and power of the contemporary orchestra in an evocative score, rich in human emotion. ‘Forget you are singers,’ Debussy told his original cast, and the result is a musical drama whose instinctive truths speak straight to the heart – a delicate fairytale that whispers where other operas shout.

Stefan Herheim, one of Europe’s most exciting directors, makes his company debut with Glyndebourne’s first new production of Pelléas in nearly 20 years – a bold staging that promises to cut to the core of this timeless, symbolist tale, reimagining the story from a fresh perspective.

David has vanquished the giant Goliath, but not everyone rejoices in his victory. Jealous of the young warrior, King Saul turns against him, descending into violent, destructive madness that forces his children to choose between loyalty and love, tearing both a family and a nation apart.

Handel’s vision of a Lear-like king is astonishing in its psychological complexity, offering a musical portrait of mental collapse few have since matched. Combined with thrilling choruses that exploit the virtuosic potential of their singers, exquisite arias and bold orchestration filled with unusual instruments, it creates a Biblical drama of truly Shakespearean scope.

Fresh from its triumph at the 2015 Glyndebourne Festival, Barrie Kosky’s blazingly original and visually spectacular staging of Handel’s oratorio returns for a first revival, pairing baroque music with contemporary choreography and lavish designs to create an enthralling theatrical fusion of old and new.

Handel expert Laurence Cummings conducts an all-star cast, including Festival favourites Iestyn Davies and Allan Clayton.

Abandoned by her lover Anatol, Vanessa retreats from the world, waiting and hoping with only her mother and her niece Erika for company. But when, 20 years later, Anatol’s handsome young son arrives unexpectedly, he shatters the calm of this shuttered household of women. Past and present love collides, and the aftershocks threaten to destroy them all.

An operatic thriller from the age of Hitchcock, Samuel Barber’s Pulitzer Prize-winning first opera boasts one of the 20th century’s most beautiful scores. Poised constantly on the edge of song, Vanessa unfolds in generous swathes of melody, rich in filmic strings and soaring brass, with echoes of Puccini, Berg and Strauss. It climaxes in a final quintet of Mozartean poignancy – one of the great ensembles of the contemporary repertoire.

Seldom performed in the UK, this is a rare opportunity to see Barber’s heart-breaking domestic drama. Olivier Award-winning director Keith Warner makes his much-anticipated Glyndebourne debut with this production, which promises to bring out the psychological tensions that sit just below the surface of this charged work.
