tribute, in this our ry of the late

"Ask not what your country can do for you, but rather what you can do for your country" was the challenge JFK offered the American people as President of the United State and fulfilled as an American.

It has been said the problems of the world were in h1s hand and the welfare of mankind was in his heart and it is with this thought, we respectfully dedicate our 1964 Hayu Saghalie.

Senior Class Prophecy

by The Class of "65"

As the bells chime over the Monroe Cathedral in the year 19?? I see the solid and not-so-solid citizens rushing anxiously up the steps to get in early in order to observe the service from a good seat ... a good BACK seat! I'Ll join this stampede and try to determine whether or not any of these folks could possibly hail from ol' MHS--Class of "64". Sure enough, there's Sue Bennett, manager of Auburn Academy elbowing her way past Congresswoman Yvonne Boeser. Goodness, since everyone is wanting a woman president so badly, and with Jeanne Cook so active in the Senate, Patti Manoske is certain to win the next election!

There is that poor Janice (Keck) Cabe, looking so tired and haggard. (sigh) I wonder if I should offer to help her up the steps ... She's simply taken in too much ironing ... been married sooooo long. I hope the new floorwalker at Alvin Schaenherr' s department store is working out better than the last one. Gilda Traylor, I believe, with Chief of Police Ted Hager to back her up, should curtail the nasty activities of those teen-agers. Here she comes now wearing an expensive Paris creation that the European sophisticate, James Theders, bought her. Ever since he's been tromping around the world with the "jet set" he's been so lavish! Gilda always has her things cleaned at Countryman's Cleaners because Nancy always packs a bottle of Poise with every order. Everyone has turned to stare at Mr. Universe, Don Dyer, who just drove up in Nels Anderson's Lincoln-Continental. Nels owns a Lincoln Showroom and makes it a policy to chauffeur celebrities in his demonstrators. Rumor has it that he's going to bring actress Thelma Werkhoven and or the new Miss America, LeAnne Meldahl, next Sunday! Isn't it exciting?!

Wait- -are the bells ringing again? Oh, it's Jim DeWalt, the Salvation Army bell ringer, over there on the corner. He always was a kindhearted soul! Well, I'd better hurry inside the church; perhaps I'll recognize more friends from my high school days. I'll sit in the balcony ...

Organist Carol Knox is softly and tenderly playing "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight?", providing the necessary soothing and meditative atmosphere, while Deacon Danny Jones, choir director Pat Hunt, and Sunday School Superintendent Nancy Momeny take seats in the front row next to Admiral Denny Johnson and Ted Both. Ted's a door-to-door salesman for women's lingerie, in case you'd forgotten. Oh, and seated next to him is Lowell Braaten who works at the Playtex Company- -they say he has a snapping good time!! tee hee! There seems to be quite a commotion at the front door of the church, probably head usher Mike McCaffery fighting for the right to take Jeanne Zarana, the model, to her pew. I'll just lean over the edge of the balcony to see. No, I was wrong! Mike Gohl and Mike Gilbert just got arrested for bigamy by policewoman Tillie Mas sine. I declare, I never

48

Page 53: 1964 - monroehistoricalarchives.org · Mt. Baker Jr. -Sr. High School; served as principal of Sunnydale Elemen tary School at Highline; was on the staff at W. S. U . ; and was Deputy

dreamed such things existed in our country nowadays! I guess if I had any brains at all, I'd follow Dena Smeenk's example and go back to the old country. Believe it or not, she went back to lead a revolt against wooden shoes- -said that thongs were better all-around foot wear. Connie Dwyer, the speech teacher at the University, is sitting directly behind me and just whispered in my ear that, apparently not finding life wielding satisfactorily, Myrna Ingraham has retired to the convent, bless her! She's such a sweet thing! Teddie Morrison, chairman of theW. C. T. U. (Women's Christian Temperance Union) just swept into the sanctuary with a beautiful hairdo styled at Linda Merritt and Gloria Zerger's salon. They're co-owners, and do quite a business. I hear Sandy Melnick is frequent and faithful patron.

Speaking of co-owners, Fred Bosch and Lester Gilman have just opened their slenderella establishment. Dennis Olson is their very faithful and most frequent patron.

Reverend Wilks is making his way up to the pulpit and has called for the first special number, announcing them as the ... Oh, no! My stars, did he say ... could he have possibly said, Fungus Five? Goodness, they can't be the same idiots who performed at our high school pep assemblies way back in 63 and 64! Their manager, Bob Hagel, announced first of all Torn Maki, who plays the bells for the Five. "Gasp!" It is they: Marvelous Marv, Devistating Dan, Jivin' Joel, Majestic Mike, and Out-of-this-World Orv.

Well, after that number I'm afraid I'll have to go to Dr. Ron Watson's office on my way horne and ask him for a sedative. His nurse, Terri Smith, gave me a jumping bean by mistake instead of my geriatric compound last time, and somehow I haven't been feeling the same lately.

Here comes a group of late corners ... Patty Mathey works as a bubble gum scraper for the Hackrne Desk Company, so she was probably stuck at horne. Pat Ramey is the local undertaker, and his ardor for drumming up business detains him. Kurt Biderbost was undoubtedly too long watching his wife sew the custom draperies for his milk barn. But then, why make excuses? ... Oh, that writer and Nobel Prize winner, Mike Donovan, just sat down on Roger Creswell, the night watchman at the Rivoli, who was sleeping!

During the offertory Jackie Stuve sang "My Mexican Rose" so beautifully that Larry Waller, who squeezes the air out of the new Kleenex boxes, started to sniffle. Kathy and Carol Borlin, the girls who sing the double mint gum ads, each turned around to flash him a smile; Jerry Godard started glaring at him as only a professional wrestler can do; and Pat Winstead started to open her purse- -she is in the tomahawk manufacturing business. Believe me, among all of them they certainly squelched his sentimentality fast!

Further down in my pew, I can hear that hilarious television and stage cornedienne, Judy Steffen, joking to carnival barker Joe Bonga about the way Nick Davis

Page 54: 1964 - monroehistoricalarchives.org · Mt. Baker Jr. -Sr. High School; served as principal of Sunnydale Elemen tary School at Highline; was on the staff at W. S. U . ; and was Deputy

tests Volkswagens for his company. However, Rod Sorenson, the first male librarian for the Monroe Public Library, leaned down and whispered that between Nick and Jean Ann Moore, the powder-puff racer, the death and accident insurance rates are climbing at an unbelievable speed! Their conversation was interrupted by Cathy Trombley begging them to be still and listen to the recording of Cleone Lorang's performance at Carnegie Hall. Cathy's "Lonely Hearts Club" has kept her too busy to be abreast of the more cultural aspects of society, especially listening to the school custodian, Susanne Hultgren, wail her scrub-woman blues, I guess.

There seem to be quite a few faces I miss seeing here at the service today. I hate to admit it, but Margaret Kriegel's saloon, the Green Canary, draws many of Rev. Wilks' prbspects away. Why, just the other day I heard that George Mcintyre, that movie star visiting up here from Hollywood, has been courting Kathy "Peaches" Brown, the bubble dancer at Margaret's saloon. However, I guess it's about a draw between Kathy and Sue Smith, the proud owner of the St. Vincent de Paul, Monroe Branch, which she has patronized all her life. But I'm sure Roger "Thunder" Ohlsen isn't at Margaret's saloon, because he is playing football for the Green Bay Packers now, and Paul Kriegel surely couldn't be there either, because he's trying his luck at St. Edward's Seminary. Of course, there is always Johnson's Jug, the one Phil owns, but he generally closes up on Sundays to go up to Tony Van Hulle' s Y. M. C. A. branch with Jerry Lorenz and Don Thomas. Jerry is a wealthy sheep farmer, while Don is a professional boxer ... he boxes lemons for the Sunkist people! It's really none of my business whether they attend services, though; I'm just curious.

Rev. Wilks has pronounced the benediction, and folks are milling around and who is stepping up beside me but Roger Wilcoxen, owner of Wilcoxen Record Cutting Company, and his tuba player, Jackie Burch. I greet them, then move on to say hello to Burt Haskins, the cartooning weather man, who asks me if I have seen Mike Crawford. He said I should speak to the truant officer at Mike's School for Wayward Girls as every morning Burt sees Bob Bock hoeing strawberries on his plantation, and peering through the wire fence at gardener Sandi Williams.

Pushing my way through the crowd I seem to spot someone I had seen earlier. Now I know! I bought gasoline at Mike Dennis' gas station; wonder how he got here so soon . And there is Bill Faussett, following in his father's footsteps. You know Mr. Faussett was Mayor back in 1963-64.

It's getting rather late now; church is over, and I think I'll stop at the drive-in and have a hamburger. Who do I see in there but Vic Deane! Doing what? Bottling ketchup.

On my way home I pass Jensen's Tux and Tails Shop. For me this day has been one of excitement, but for them--just another day in the life of the Class of "64" from Monroe High School.

Many people deserve a great deal of thanks for their help in making the Hayu Saghalie of 1964 one of the best ever. A big THANK YOU goes to Margaret Knegel for undertaking the job of business manager; to Harold Rothgeb for his excellent work as photographer; to Minor Motors for the cars they loaned us for our Homecoming activities; to Marv Flickner for soliciting adverti ements; to Ken Knutson for the picture of President Kennedy; to Mrs. Arlene Barry, our harried advisor; and to the many others who helped to make this annual possible.
