The 1986 Berlin discotheque bombing was a terrorist attack on the La Belle discothèque inWest Berlin, Germany, an entertainment venue that was commonly frequented by United Statessoldiers. A bomb placed under a table near the disk jockey's booth exploded at 1:45 am CET onApril 5, 1986, killing three people and injuring around 230 people, including 79 Americanservicemen.

Nermin Hannay, a Turkish woman, and U.S. sergeant Kenneth T. FORD were killed

instantly; a second American sergeant, James E. Goins, died from his injuries two months later.Some of the victims were left permanently disabled.

Reagan retaliated by ordering airstrikes against the Libyan capital of Tripoli and city of Benghazi(see Operation El Dorado Canyon). At least 15 civilians were killed in the U.S. airstrikes onLibya, including a child described as leader Colonel Gaddafi's adopted 15-month old daughter,and more than 2000 were injured, including the then-3 year old Khamis Gaddafi. 

Trial and conviction

In spite of reports blaming Libya for the attack on the nightclub, no individual was officiallyaccused of the bombing until the 1990 reunification of Germany and the subsequent opening upof the Stasi archives. STASI files led German prosecutor Detlev Mehlis to MusbahAbdulghasem Eter, a Libyan who had worked at the Libyan embassy in EAST BERLIN. Stasifiles listed him as an agent, and Mehlis said he was the Libyan spy agency's main contact at theembassy.

Eter and four other suspects were arrested in 1996 in Lebanon, Italy, Greece and Berlin, and puton trial a year later. In 2001 Musbah Abdulghasem Eter, and two Palestinians, Yasser

Mohammed Chreidi (or Yassar Al-Shuraidi or Yassir Chraidi) and Ali Chanaa were convicted inBerlin's  Landgericht 

 of aiding in murder, and Chanaa's former German wife, Mrs VerenaChanaa, was convicted of murder. They were given sentences of 12 to 14 years in prison.

Prosecutor Mehlis proved beyond reasonable doubt that the three men had assembled the bombin the Chanaas' flat. The explosive was said to have been brought into West Berlin in a Libyandiplomatic bag. VERENA CHANAA and her sister, ANDREA HAEUSLER, carried it into theLa Belle in a travel bag and left five minutes before it exploded. Ms Haeusler was acquittedbecause it could not be proved that she knew a bomb was in the bag.

Background to the bombingThe judge Peter Marhofer said it was not clear whether Gaddafi or Libyan intelligence hadactually ordered the attack, though there were indications that they had. Two weeks before theLa Belle discotheque blast, Gaddafi called for Arab assaults on American interests worldwideafter a U.S.-Libyan naval clash in the Mediterranean, in which 35 seamen on a Libyan patrolboat in the Gulf of Sidra were killed in international waters claimed by Libya.[1] 

Chreidi was eventually extradited from Lebanon to Germany in connection with the bombing.He had been working for the Libyan Peoples' Bureau in East Berlin at the time of the bombing.Chreidi was said to have connections with Palestinian terrorist Abu Nidal, who used to live in

Tripoli and was financed by Libya in the 1980s. Eter was reported to be the Libyan spy agency'spoint man at the embassy in East Berlin.

Compensation

On August 17, 2003, newspapers reported that Libya had signaled to the German governmentthat it was ready to negotiate compensation for the bombing with lawyers for non-U.S. victims.[9]

A year later, on August 10, 2004, Libya concluded an agreement to pay a total of $35 millioncompensation. 

In October 2008, Libya paid $1.5 billion into a fund which will be used to compensate relativesof the following:

1.  Lockerbie bombing victims with the remaining 20% of the sum agreed in 2003;2.  American victims of the 1986 Berlin discotheque bombing;3.  American victims of the 1989 UTA Flight 772 bombing; and,4.  Libyan victims of the 1986 US bombing of Tripoli and Benghazi.

Verena is venerated as a saint by the Coptic Orthodox Church and by the Roman CatholicChurch. According to tradition, she was associated with the Theban Legion and died on the 4th

day of Thout (September 14).

Travel to Switzerland

According to tradition, Saint Verena joined the THEBAN Legion in its mission to Rhaetia (partof modern day Switzerland) and was a relative of Saint Victor of the Theban Legion. Thesoldiers' relatives were allowed to accompany them in order to look after them and take care of their wounds.

When Saint Maurice, Saint Victor and the other members of the THEBAN Legion weremartyred, Saint Verena led the life of a hermit. First, she settled in a place called Solothurn, butlater moved into a cave near present-day Zurich. she comes from Garagous village, Qous, Qena,Egypt. As a hermit, Verena fasted and prayed continuously. According to tradition, sheperformed several miracles. Verena was particularly concerned over young girls and used to look after them spiritually and physically, due to her expertise as a nurse. 

As a result of her fame, legend states that the local governor arrested her and sent her to jail, where Saint Maurice appeared to her to console and strengthen her. She was released from jail,and continued to perform miracles. Due to her, many converted to Christianity. Saint Verena wasinterested in serving the poor and used to offer them food. Moreover, she enjoyed serving thesick, especially those suffering from leprosy. She used to wash their wounds and put ointmentson them, not fearing infection. She died at Switzerland.

In 1986, a delegation from Saint Verena’s Church in Switzerland, brought to Egypt a part of Saint Verena’s relics. 

The first Coptic church consecrated in the name of Saint Verena is Saint Maurice and SaintVerena’s Church in Cairo, which was consecrated by HH Pope Shenouda III on February 22,

1994.

In October 2004, a delegation from Saint Verena's (Saint Mary & Saint Verena's) Coptic Churchin Anaheim, California in the United States of America, along with His Grace Bishop Serapionof Los Angeles and Fr. Joseph Boules, traveled to Switzerland to bring a part of Saint Verena'srelics to Anaheim. Her church in Anaheim now has a museum dedicated to her relics andartifacts.

BERLIN DISCO BOMBING

A documentary broadcast August 25 by German public television presents compelling evidencethat some of the main suspects in the 1986 Berlin disco bombing, the event that provided thepretext for a US air assault on Libya, worked for American and Israeli intelligence.

The report, aired by Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF television) on August 25, 1998 , is of the greatest relevance to events of the past three weeks, in which attacks on US embassies inKenya and Tanzania have become the justification for US missile strikes against Afghanistanand Sudan, and a shift in American foreign policy to an even more unbridled use of militaryforce internationally.

With Washington declaring “war against terrorism” and arrogating to itself the right to use itsmilitary might unilaterally against any target anywhere in the world, the German TV reportraises the most serious and disturbing questions. All the more so, since the US media and leadingRepublican politicians, within hours of the American embassy bombings, began citing Reagan’s

1986 air attack on Libya as an exemplary response to terrorist attacks, and pressed Clinton tocarry out similar military action.

THE AIR STRIKE ON LIBYA 

On April 15, 1986 US war planes bombed the Libyan cities of Tripoli and Benghazi. Theydestroyed the home of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and killed at least 30 civilians,including many children. Gaddafi himself, the main target of the air strike, was not hurt.

Two hours later President Ronald Reagan justified the unprecedented attack on a sovereigncountry and its head of state in a national television address. The US, Reagan claimed, had

“direct, precise and irrefutable” proof that Libya was responsible for a bomb blast in a WestBerlin discotheque. The explosion 10 days earlier at the disco La Belle, a favorite nightspot forUS soldiers, had killed three people and injured 200.

Since November of 1997 five defendants have been on trial in a Berlin court for their allegedinvolvement in the La Belle attack. But in the course of more than half a year the case hasproceeded very slowly. ZDF television, which carried out its own investigation into the case,explained why in the August 25 documentary produced by its political magazine Frontal.

 WHAT THE GERMAN DOCUMENTARY REVEALS 

The Frontal report arrives at the following conclusions:

1) The lead defendant presently on trial, Yasser Chraidi, is very possibly innocent, and is beingused as a scapegoat by German and American intelligence services.

2) At least one of the defendants, Musbah Eter, has been working for the CIA over many years.

3) Some of the key suspects have not appeared in court, because they are being protected byWestern intelligence services.

4) At least one of those, Mohammed Amairi, is an agent of Mossad, the Israeli secret service.

The man charged with being the mastermind of the La Belle attack, 38-year-old Yasser Chraidi,

was a driver at the Libyan embassy in East Berlin in 1986. He later moved to Lebanon, fromwhence he was extradited to Germany in May 1996.

Frontal interviewed the two Lebanese responsible for the extradition of Chraidi: the formerpublic prosecutor Mounif Oueidat and his deputy Mrad Azoury. Both confirm that the Germanauthorities used deceit to have Chraidi extradited.

According to Azoury, he received no evidence that Chraidi was actually involved in the attack;there were only “hints.” Oueidat states that the Germans showed tremendous interest in gettingChraidi. “The Americans were behind this demand,” he says. “This was obvious. They spurredon the Germans to speed up the extradition.”

Eventually Chraidi, declared to be a “top terrorist,” was flown to Germany in a spectacularsecurity operation. But a Berlin judge found the evidence presented by the prosecution so weak,he threatened to release Chraidi within three weeks unless more proof was presented.

At this point another man was brought into the case, who, according to Frontal, “was obviouslysupposed to be spared by the prosecution until then.” On September 9, 1996, the very day theBerlin judge threatened to release Chraidi, Berlin public prosecutor Detlev Mehlis, Berlin policeinspector Uwe Wilhelms and a Mr. Winterstein of the German Federal Intelligence Service(BND) met Musbah Eter in the Mediterranean island state of Malta.

CIA INVOLVEMENT

The meeting had been prepared by the BND, which maintains close connections to its Americancounterpart, the CIA. Musbah Eter was running an international business in Malta, which,according to Frontal, served as a cover for extensive intelligence operations on behalf of theCIA.

The German authorities wanted him on a murder charge. But during the Malta meeting a dealwas struck: “Immunity for Eter, if he incriminates Chraidi for La Belle.” The next day Eter wentto the German embassy and testified. As a result, the warrant against him was scrapped and hewas allowed to travel to Germany.

In the words of Frontal, Eter is “the key figure in the La Belle trial.” At the time of the discobomb attack he worked for the Libyan embassy in East Berlin. But he paid regular visits to theUS embassy. According to Christian Ströbele, the lawyer for Chraidi, this highly unusual fact isproven by extensive notes of the East German secret police, who watched Eter very closely at thetime.

There are many indications that Eter was actively involved in the La Belle bombing. Accordingto interrogation transcripts studied by Frontal, he had the detailed knowledge of a participant. Heeven admitted that he brought the operating instructions for the bomb to the flat of acodefendant.

Frontal asserts that besides the defendants in the present trial, another group was involved in theLa Belle bombing–a group of professional terrorists, working for anybody who paid them, led bya certain “Mahmoud” Abu Jaber. Members of this group, according to Frontal, “have barely beenbothered by the prosecution and live securely in other countries.”

In the months preceding the La Belle attack they lived in East Berlin and met, almost on a dailybasis, with the present defendants. Hours before the attack they moved to West Berlin, where thebomb exploded. Their movements were monitored by the East German and Russian secretservices, who concluded that they were working for Western intelligence.

The Russian KGB, in a document cited by Frontal, gave the opinion that American

counterintelligence planned to use “Mahmoud” to concoct a case for the involvement of Libyanterrorists in the attack. According to the same KGB document, “Mahmoud” had warned WestBerlin intelligence two days before the explosion.

Frontal followed the traces of Mohammed Amairi, the right-hand man of “Mahmoud” AbuJaber, who, according to the documents it has studied, “was particularly involved in thepreparation of the La Belle attack.”

An agent of Mossad 

Amairi left Germany for Norway in 1990, when a warrant was issued for his arrest. He now livesin the Norwegian town of Bergen, where Frontal found and interviewed him. He stopped theinterview when he was asked what secret service he had been working for. His lawyer, OddDrevland, finally told the story.

When Amairi moved to Norway he was arrested and branded “a danger to the country” on thefront page of tabloids. But then the Israeli secret service Mossad took charge of him and“everything changed.”

“Was Amairi a Mossad agent?” asked Frontal. “He was a Mossad man,” answered Drevland.

In the meantime, Norway has granted asylum to Amairi and he will soon receive Norwegiancitizenship. The Berlin prosecutor has lifted the warrant against him.

“These secret service intrigues present a task for the Berlin court that is almost insoluble,”concludes the Frontal report. “But one thing is certain, the American legend of Libyan stateterrorism can no longer be maintained.”

There are striking parallels between the 1986 bombing of Libya and last week’s missile strikesagainst targets in Sudan and Afghanistan. Once again Washington claims to have “proof” to justify its use of deadly force. But as the Frontal report shows, such claims cannot be trusted.Twelve years after the bombing of Libya, Reagan’s proof turns out to be anything but irrefutable.Instead there is powerful evidence that the La Belle attack was a carefully prepared provocation.

It may come as a shock to many Americans, all the more so given the utterly venal and lying role

of the US media, but US intelligence services are well versed in the most unscrupulous andbloody methods, not excluding those that result in injury or death to Americans. No seriousconsideration of the August 7 East African bombings can rule out the possibility of aprovocation, organized either directly or indirectly by US agencies.

Certainly the US embassy bombings, with their terrible human toll–for the most part, African–provided a welcome pretext for forcing through a desired shift in policy and obtaining publicsupport for unilateral military action. Indeed, within hours of the US embassy bombings, theInternational Herald Tribune had published a column declaring the attacks were “acts of war andthe United States could take reprisals against the bombers under international law without theapproval of the United Nations.”

We wait with interest to see whether any of the American television networks–CBS, NBC, ABC,CNN–or any of the establishment newspapers will even take note of the German exposé of theevents surrounding the bombing of Libya. We have no expectation that they will.
