Wireless Network Adapter Installation

• Installing a RoamAbout PC card requires the same level of knowledge required to install any standard Ethernet adapter card.

• A basic understanding of the operating system which you are working with is necessary to ensure a smooth installation.

• This overview will discuss installations on both Windows 95 and NT workstation 4.0 operating systems

Installation on Windows 95

• Since Windows 95 is a plug- and-play compatible operating system, the wireless adapter installation is very simple

• Ensure the PCMCIA slot is empty and put the wireless adapter into the empty slot

NIC ConfigurationWindows 95

• Once the driver is loaded the RoamAbout 802.11 Settings window will open

• From here you can configure the settings:

– At the Basic tab you need to enter the Wireless network name for that network

– If you want the Ad-Hoc mode, you should select the appropriate option

Note: The Wireless Network Name has to be consistent with the rest of the

network

• If you want Power management, here is where you would select it.

– Note: if your device has a hard drive device such as a lap top computer, the power savings in the power management mode would be insignificant

– If the device has a static storage device the power savings may be significant

• The final step is to click OK and let the services bind to the driver

– At this point you may be asked to insert the Windows 95 CD so that the services may be loaded

– If this occurs then just follow the prompt

• Now right-click on Network Neighborhood, and assign the IP address as you would for any other NIC installation

Installation on Windows NT 4.0 • Prior to installing the wireless network interface card onto

your NT 4.0 workstation

• You should perform the following steps:

– Enabling the PC card controller

– Running Windows NT diagnostics

– Enabling network support

Page 16: 1999 Cabletron Systems. Wireless Networking RoamAbout RoamAbout Installation Installation/Configuration of: Network adapter card on a: Windows 95 system

Enabling the PC Card Controller

• From the Control Panel

– Double-click on the PC card to open the PC card Properties window

– Note: here that the card is recognized; however, there are no drivers loaded yet so the card itself is disabled.

Verifying the I/O port and IRQ settings

• Verify the I/O port and IRQ settings since NT 4.0 is NOT plug-and-play capable.

• From Administrative Tools click NT Diagnostics

– Note that the factory settings for the RoamAbout NIC are

• I/O port 03040-037F

• IRQ 10

– These may require changing if there is a conflict

Note that here in fact there would be a conflict with the IRQ of 10.

Verifying the I/O Port and IRQ Settings

• Once you have verified the settings, you may need to select another (unused) IRQ and or I/O port. Which is discussed later in this presentation.

• Take note of the new value that you will use if you are going to change the defaults
