FO(),TBALLWINNING PHILOSOPHY1. Strive to be tougher, smarter and in better condition than anyone we play

against.A. TOUGHER: We must out physical our opponent with strength and

intensity. The most fundamental aspect of the game is how we block andtackle. Mental toughness will be measured in our ability to sustain ourphysical toughness. Every play - Every day.

    B. SMARTER: We must understand rules and have the discipline to playwithin these rules. We can not give games away due to lack ofconcentration that results in costly penalties. "Gift List" of foolish penalties.

    C. 8 ETTER CO N0 ITI 0N: First, our off season conditioning will provide abase for us to develop our toughness and skill once the season begins.Second, this base will lead us into our in-season conditioning that willallow us to have a big edge in the 4th quarter. Third] you can prolongyour career by staying in good condition.

    2. Sound design of Special teams] Defense and Offense. All three must bestrong to be champions.

    A. We have a system that allows us to put our players in position to utilizetheir talents - flexible enough to take advantage of our opponents.B. WHAT and HOW: Within the system we place a totof emphasis on

assignment and technique - What to do and How to do it. If everyoneis right assignment wise and then technique wise, only a physicalmismatch can beat us - we can accept that.

.C. TEAM MORALE is achieved when our players truly feel they are. prepared.

3 . Be careful when pre-judging an opponent. While we never want to underestimate an opponent, it can be equally wrong to over estimate him. By sodoing, we concede certain things to him that he has not earned.

    4. Only a few statistics have any importance:A. TURN OVER MARGIN - Give away - Take away ratio. Both are

important, but take aways are even more important.B. POSSESION DOWN CONVERSIONS: Much of our success will

depend upon how we handle a critical situation, whether it be third downor fourth down.

    C. Average yards per rushing attempt. (Off & Oef)D. Sack ratio and yards per pass attempt. (Off& Oef)

    5. BEST PUNTER IN MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE will not have to leadleague in punting because:A. He will kick for height rather than distance.B. He will master the "pooch" and out of bounds kick in opponents territory.C. He will be a two-step punter.O. He will sacrifice distance - but not height - in order to get punt away

quickly.6. FIELD POSITION and OPPORTUNISM: We want to give our opponent the

long field and then be opportunistic by taking advantage of every good fieldposition that we get.

    7. COMPOSURE: Play the hand we're dealt - Our rnaturtty, poise and flexibility toadjust to "sudden change" will often be a deciding factor.

    8. COMMUNICATION: Much of the detail and precision can only be fine tuned bygood communication by all of us.9. SECOND EFFORT: We must have the "want to" to sustain just a little longer.

Finish every play. It will be the deciding factor in this game of inches! EveryPlay - Every Day

    10. PERSONNEL: Ability is important but we will win wrth players that haveafootball temperament.A. Work Habits8. ToughnessC. DurabilityD. Love and enjoy the game.E. UnselfishnessF. DisciplineG. Ability to learn.

    11. FAMILY: We are aTeam - There is enough for everybody if we don't worryabout who gets credrt. Unselfish - Will to prepare - concentrate in meetings, extra film study are all part of prices to pay in order to win.

SUBSTANCE ABUSETESTING" EDUCATIONStudent-athletes live in an environment which often encourages the use of substances to enhanceperformance or deal with problems. The Department of Athletics at San Diego State University isconcerned that the use of illegal drugs and the abuse of substances such as anabolic steroids areharmful to students and the reputation of the athletics program. The Department of Athletics prohibits the use of illegal and/or performance enhancing substances bystudent-athletes. In addition to other legal prohibitions, including criminal statutes, student-athletesshould be aware that the regulations of the California State University system provide that students maybe expelled, suspended, or placed on probation for the sale or knowing possession of dangerousdrugs or narcotics as those terms are used in California statutes, except when lawfully prescribedpursuant to medical or dental care, or when lawfully permitted for the purpose of research, instructionor analysis, or for possession of dangerous chemicals on campus or at a campus function. [Title 5,California Administrative Code, Section 41301 (h), 0)].

    1) To educate all department personnel and student-atllietes regarding the policy onsubstance abuse.2) To provide student-athletes with a testing program, educational opportunities, and

follow-up rehabilitation when necessary.3) To provide medical exams for student-atllietes to identify potential medical problems

prior to, during or after seasonal athletics programs.

COMPLIANCEIf the student-athlete fails to provide consent or otherwise refuses to comply with the requirements of thesubstance abuse testing and education program, fails to meet with the Athletics Director after beingnotified of a positive test result, or refuses to comply with the recommendations of the Ath!etic Director, physician and/or counselor, the following actions may result:

    1) Referral to an on - or off-campus substance abuse counselor for evaluation, assessment, counseling, and/or treatment.

    2) Suspension of student-athlete from practice or competition pending future compliance.3) Permanent suspension from athletics.

    SUBSTANCE ABUSE TESTING PROCEDURES

Urine samples are routinely obtained on a random basis to be tested for evidence of il legal andperformance enhancing substances. Each student-athlete shall sign a consent form prior to undergoingthe substance abuse testing.A similar consent form shall be required by the NCAA for championship events, certified post seasonfootball contests, and year-round testing in the sport of football. All student-athletes shall normally be tested for substances via random selection. However, testing canbe required of student-athletes when reasonable cause exists.

POSITIVE TEST PROCEDURESUpon receipt of a positive test result, the laboratory performing the substance screen will notify theAssociate Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Services. The AAD/SAS will notify the student-athleteof the positive result and a meeting will be arranged between the student-athlete and the Department ofAthletics representative (to be determined by the Director at Athletics). After this meeting, the Director of Athletics may recommend one of several courses of action:

    1) Satisfactory resolution at the meeting;2) Assessment and counseling (treatment) at an on - or off-campus facility. Any expenses

for this treatment are the responsibility of tile student-athlete and/or his or her parents.Any athlete who tests positive immediately upon arriving at San Diego State Universityfrom another school will be subject to timely mandatory counseling and may besuspended.

    3) Adoption of other appropriate responses, which will include suspension from competitionfor a designated period of time and continued testing after first positive test. Failure of anathlete to attend mandatory counseling or to submit to a subsequent drug test at thespecified location and time shall count as a second positive test.

    4) A second positive test during the career of a student-athlete at SOSU will resuit in anautomatic one year suspension, will result in automatic dismissal from the teamimmediately, and the withholding of financial aid at the end of the semester involved. Thestudent-athlete must wait at least a year before re-applying for reinstatement, both forparticipation and for his/her financial aid.Any student-athlete who wishes to dispute the results of the original test may order thesample be re-tested to confirm or reverse the original test results.

The appropriate action will be determined by the Director of Athletics appraisal of the situation, includingany information supplied by tile student-athlete.

    STUDENT ATHLETE CONDUCT POLICY

Membership on an intercollegiate athletic team at San Diego State University is considered a privilege.Athletic team members must abide by all University policies, team rules, the rules and policies of theNCAA and the Western Athletic Conference, and all federal and state laws. Because of public exposurein the competitive arena and the fact that the media places athletic team members in the most visiblegroups in the University community, the City of San Diego, the County of San Diego and-the State ofCalifornia, what student members do and the way in which they do it are often highlighted. Therefore, athletic team members must demonstrate exemplary behavior. They must conduct themselves withintegrity, sportsmanship, honesty, pride, humanity, and good citizenship. Discipline may be imposedfor conduct deemed embarrassing to the department. The Head Coach, subject to the review and approval of the Director of Athletics, may bar a student-athlete from participating in team activity for a prescribed period of time for violation of this Student-Athlete Conduct Policy. A sanction may be imposed as soon as the Head Coach notifies the student-athlete of the violation, gives the student-athlete a chance to explain what happened, and determinesthat a sanction is justified after consideration of the student-athlete's statement. The level of progressivediscipline is up to the discretion of the head coach. Disciplinary actions may include, but are not limitedto: probation, mandated counseling sessions, ineligibility to practice, ineligibility to start in contests, sttting out games, suspension in/or continued suspension from the team, permanent dismissal from theteam, and discontinuation or non-renewal of athletic grants and aid.The sanction for any violation shall be subject to review and approval of the Director of Athletics.Discipline imposed by the Director of Athletics does not preclude any disciplinary action, which may beimposed by San Diego State Unrversity under section 41301 et seq. Title VI California Code ofRegulations.A student-athlete who is charged with a misdemeanor or felony sha1l be immediately suspended fromcompetition by the head coach, pending an investigation by the Director of Athletics. HITTINGThe essence of winning football is largely possessing the ability and the desire toOUT-HIT your opponent. Usually the most highly motivated and toughest teamwins.

The elements of the game that will most readily determine the outcome of thecontest more than any others are; 1) striking, 2) blocking and 3) tackling. Thisstatement is not meant to minimize the importance of excellence in such skilledareas as running, throwing and catching on offense and covering, pass rushing andintercepting on defense, but if a team does not OUT HIT its opponent, usually it willlose. An offense can sometimes out-finesse the defense and win, but a defense can

. NEVERout-finesse the offense and be successful. The defense must physicallydefeat the offense. Therefore, it is of paramount importance that our Aztecdefense be an aggressive, swarming, hard hitting, gang tackling team.We must consistently "knock" blockers and ball carriers backwards.

"Iv \AKE THE P ILES GO BACKWARDS1JJTo do this we must adhere to these pure and basic principles of championshipdefensive football play.

1 . BEQUICK - Beat your opponent to the punch by being strong and explosive.

2 . PLAYLOW - Strike underneath your opponent by using a bent knee hittingposition.

    3. STRIKE- Defeat the blocker. Use his body to your advantage. Knock himinto the ball carrier. Get off the block and make the play.

    4. GET TO THE STRIKEPOINT (TACKLE) - Before we can hit, we must get tothe collision point as fast as possible. Relentless pursuit will get us there.

    5. SEEWHAT YOU HIT - As you get to the collision point, eyes open, tail down, knees bent, wide base, hit upward.

    6. HITTHROUGH YOUR OPPONENT - Not to him. Drive through yo.ur man, take him backward.7. SWARM - Play your responsibility and then everyone to the ball. I f your first

or second man misses, our pursuit will make the play. The game will be won or lost on which team "knocks" the other one backward.
