PHYSICS: A Key to National Development.Evidences of Progress…

Do you know how long it took Magellan to reach the Philippines from

Spain? Almost two years.

That was about 500 years ago. Today, you can travel the same

distance in less than one day. This is one of the example and evidence of

progress.

The World of PHYSICS…

The signs of progress are everywhere such as:

1.modern transportation (by land, water, air, or even through space);

2.modern means of communications;

3.modern forms of entertainment; 4.modern machines for agriculture

and industry; 5.modern gadgets for home; 6.modern medical equipments; and so many other modern

conveniences.

The World of PHYSICS…

These are the classic examples of physics interventions to our way of life from the past to the present… and it will go on in the future. From the past…

The World of PHYSICS…

Physics is indispensable to our lives. It has proven itself to be the pioneer

science of any other science.

The world of physics was explore and traveled by men and women

who made fortune and breakthrough during their times.

They are the famous men and women of physics. They discovered, pioneer and further studied what is

in physics and beyond…

The World of PHYSICS…

Some Pioneers and Discoverers of Physics…Galileo Galilei is an Italian physicist and astronomer. Galileo

maintained that the earth revolved around the sun, disputing the belief held by the Roman Catholic church that the earth was the center of the universe. He refused to obey orders from Rome to cease discussions of his theories and was sentenced to life imprisonment. It was not until 1984 that a papal commission acknowledged that the church was wrong.

Aristotle. Known to medieval intellectuals as simply “the Philosopher,” Aristotle is possibly the greatest thinker in Western history and, historically, perhaps the single greatest influence on Western intellectual development.

The World of PHYSICS…

Some Pioneers and Discoverers of Physics…Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus revolutionized

science by postulating that the earth and other planets revolve about a stationary sun. Developed in the early 1500s but not published until years later, his heliocentric (sun-centered) theory disputed the Ptolemaic theory, popular at the time, which held that the sun and the planets revolved about the fixed earth. Copernicus at first hesitated in publishing his findings because he feared criticism from the scientific and religious communities. After suffering initial disbelief and rejection, however, the Copernican system ranked as the most accepted concept of the universe by the late 17th century.

Johannes Kepler believed that the Copernican heliocentric view of the solar system, which held that the earth rotates around the stationary sun, was correct. Kepler formulated an accurate mathematical description of planetary orbits that gave mathematical rigor to the heliocentric model.

The World of PHYSICS…

Some Pioneers and Discoverers of Physics…Isaac Newton’s work represents one of the greatest

contributions to science ever made by an individual. Most notably, Newton derived the law of universal gravitation, invented the branch of mathematics called calculus, and performed experiments investigating the nature of light and color.

Archimedes discovered the principle of water displacement while taking a bath. He also developed simple machines such as the lever and screw into useful tools for war and irrigation.

Some Pioneers and Discoverers of Physics…

Blaise Pascal is noted primarily as a mathematician, scientist, and author.

Dutch-born Swiss scientist Daniel Bernoulli was a pioneer of the study of how fluids move. He formulated Bernoulli’s principle, which states that a fluid exerts less pressure as it moves faster, and vice versa.

Enrico FermiFamous for producing the first controlled nuclear reaction in 1942; physicist worked as a consultant for the Manhattan Project during World War II, helping to design the atomic bomb.

Some Modern Pioneers and Discoverers of Physics…

Nikola Tesla Inventor of the first practical electric motor powered by alternating current.

Albert Einstein is considered one of the greatest and most popular scientists of all time.

Robert A. Millikanconducted a series of experiments that measured the electrical charge carried by an electron.

Otto Stern developed a method for studying the magnetism of atoms, atomic nuclei, and protons.
