RICHARD NELSON OVERTHE GABRIELS:DE PRESIDENTSVERKIEZINGEN EN HET THEATER

Shakespeare begreep ons. Zijn (en John Fletchers) toneelstuk Hendrik VIII gaat over politieke macht en achterkamertjespolitiek, afgewisseld met zo nu en dan wat politiek ceremonieel om de gewone burger tevreden te stellen. Het heeft als eigenaardige ondertitel All is true (Alles is waar). Maar, als alles waar is, dan is natuurlijk ook niets waar.

In onrustige en moeilijke tijden heeft theater niet alleen de mogelijk-heid, maar ook de verantwoordelijkheid om deze verwarring in beeld te brengen en de ambiguïteiten, twijfels en angsten van die tijden te verwoorden. Het doel is niet om achter een partij of een standpunt te gaan staan, maar te proberen om mensen en werelden te portretteren zoals ze zijn – niet zoals we zouden willen dat ze zijn. Theater is naar mijn mening geen pleidooi, maar een poging de menselijke complexiteit te laten zien en die te delen met een levend publiek, op hetzelfde moment en in dezelfde ruimte: van mens tot mens.

Op die manier probeer ik als toneelschrijver te voorkomen dat ik word gekaapt door argumenten en ideologieën, en vooral niet die waar ik het als burger misschien wel mee eens ben. Natuurlijk is de verleiding groot om in moeilijke tijden het theater in te zetten als wapen. Maar mijn the-ater is veel meer een tempel dan een wapen: een plek van samenkomst waar we misschien onszelf en anderen kunnen zien, onze eigen wereld en die van anderen, en waar we ons kunnen koesteren in het besef dat we niet alleen zijn in onze angsten en verwarring, dat we samen proberen om de zaken te begrijpen en eruit te komen.

Met andere woorden: mijn theater is geen plek om te schreeuwen of gekapitteld te worden en we gaan er ook niet heen om te worden opge-hitst. Het is een plek om samen te komen, om te midden van vreemden in het donker te zitten en de complexiteit van de wereld die voor ons ligt te erkennen. Zoals de grote Engelse toneelschrijver Harley Granville Barker zo’n honderd jaar geleden schreef: ‘Toneelkunst is de weerslag – in imaginaire vorm – van de maatschappij zelf’.

DE STUKKEN: EEN RHINEBECK-PANORAMA

Elk van deze stukken speelt zich af op een beslissend moment in de negen maanden die samen de periode markeren van de Amerikaanse presidentsverkiezingen van 2016: de vrijdag na ‘Super Tuesday’, als de voorverkiezingen zijn losgebarsten, half september als de algemene ver-kiezingen in volle gang zijn en de verkiezingsdag zelf. Toen elk stuk voor het eerst werd opgevoerd, wisten noch de personages, noch het publiek wat er stond te gebeuren tijdens deze gedenkwaardige verkiezingen, of wat er zou gebeuren op de verkiezingsdag zelf. Dus voor een deel vor-men deze stukken drie real time doorkijkjes in het leven van een familie in het verkiezingsjaar 2016.

De ondertitel van deze trilogie is Election Year in the Life of One Family (Verkiezingsjaar in het leven van een familie). Gezien de zorgen die wij allemaal hadden toen de uitkomst van deze verkiezingen dichterbij kwam, en gezien de verontrustende afloop ervan, zou het volkomen begrijpelijk zijn als de ondertitel simpelweg gelezen zou worden als ‘de presidentsverkiezing in het leven van één familie’. Maar deze stukken volgen behalve het verloop van een verkiezing ook een jaar in de levens van deze personages: een jaar dat hun hoop en verlies laat zien, hun angsten en veerkracht en hoe die vervlochten zijn met een politieke periode waarvan de meesten van ons zich vooraf geen voorstelling had-den kunnen maken. Mijn doel was dan ook deels om een weerbarstige en omstreden nationale gebeurtenis te verweven met de kleine (en grote) gebeurtenissen in de persoonlijke levens van normale mensen, om op die manier wellicht een wereld te kunnen portretteren waarin het persoon-lijke, het culturele, het maatschappelijke, het artistieke, het politieke en het familieleven niet als gescheiden categorieën worden gezien, maar als onscheidbare aspecten van ons leven. Dat was althans één van de ambities.

Deze stukken zijn gesitueerd in Rhinebeck, New York, een stadje zo’n 160 kilometer ten noorden van New York City dat door de The New York Times ooit betiteld werd als ‘de stad die door de tijd vergeten is’. Het is een heel klein plaatsje, maar toch, hoe meer ik erover schrijf en ik het met mijn personages bevolk, hoe groter het in mijn verbeelding is gewor-den. Jaren geleden stuitte ik in het Museum of London in Engeland op een heel groot (2,5 x 1 m) panoramisch waterverfpaneel met de intrige-rende titel The Rhinebeck Panorama. Helaas – vanuit het perspectief van iemand die in Rhinebeck woont – toont deze gigantische aquarel geen panoramisch beeld van mijn kleine stadje in de Hudsonvallei, maar een vogelperspectief op het Londen rond de jaren 1830. Mijn stadje, zo ont-dekte ik, heeft wel zijn naam gegeven aan dit werk: in 1941 werd het doek

gevonden op de zolder van een huis in Rhinebeck, als binnenbekleding van een ton waarin pistolen werden bewaard. [Hoe het daar gekomen is en waarom de pistolen in een ton bewaard werden, is nog altijd een raadsel.] Toch is die benaming ‘Rhinebeck Panorama’ me bijgebleven en ik denk dat die me heeft geïnspireerd omdat het een grandioze blik en een groots uitzicht suggereert – wat het ook inderdaad geeft – maar dan op een heel klein plaatsje.

Ergens in die suggestie ligt, denk ik, een tweede ambitie voor deze stuk-ken besloten.

Het fragment uit Beatrice Palmato, een onafgemaakt verhaal van Edith Wharton, dat door Karin wordt voorgelezen, werd voor het eerst gepubliceerd als een appendix in Edith Wharton: A Biography van R.W.B Lewis.

TIJDLIJN AMERIKAANSEVERKIEZINGENSeptember 2015 - mei 2016: zes leden van de Democratische Partij mel-den zich aan als presidentskandidaat. Zeventien leden van de Republi-keinse partij melden zich aan als presidentskandidaat. 1 maart 2016: Super Tuesday. Een belangrijke dag in de voorverkiezingen. In twaalf staten wordt gekozen voor de Republikeinse en Democratische presidentskandidaat. Clinton en Trump zijn de winnaars op deze dag, met allebei zeven staten.

4 maart 2016: dag waarop het eerste deel van The Gabriels zich afspeelt.

18-28 juli 2016: partijconventies. De Republikeinse en Democratische partij organiseren nationale conventies waar afgevaardigden hun stem uitbrengen op de presidentskandidaten. Ze volgen daarbij de uitslagen van de deelverkiezingen in hun staten.

10 september 2016: in een speech zegt Clinton dat de helft van Trumps aanhangers thuishoort in ‘het mandje sneue types: de racistische, seksis-tische homofobe, xenofobe, islamofobe, noem maar op.’ Het komt haar op grote kritiek te staan. Clinton biedt later excuses aan.

16 september 2016: dag waarop het tweede deel van The Gabriels zich afspeelt.

7 oktober 2016: er duikt een tape op met ruwe opnames uit het pro-gramma Access Hollywood uit 2005. Trump zegt daarin dat je alles bij vrouwen kan flikken, als je maar beroemd bent. Ook zegt hij: ‘Je kan alles doen ... grijp ze in hun kruis.’

8 november 2016: dag van de presidentsverkiezingen. Donald Trump wordt verkozen tot de 45e president van de Verenigde Staten. Dag waarop het derde deel van The Gabriels zich afspeelt.

AUTHOR’S NOTE:THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION AND THE THEATERShakespeare understood us. His (and Fletcher’s) Henry the Eighth is a play about political power and backroom politics, interrupted by oc-casional political pageantry to appease the common citizen. It carries this extraordinary subtitle: All Is True. Of course, if all is true, then also nothing is.ln troubled and troubling times, theater has not only an opportunity, but the responsibility, to portray this confusion, and articulate the ambigui-ties, doubts, and fears of its time. The goal then being notto argue a side or a point, but to attempt to portray people and worlds as they are, not as we wish them to be. Theater, to my mind, is not an ar-gument, but an effort to create and portray human complexity, which we then share with a living audience, at the same time, in the same space: human being to human being.ln this way, as a playwright, I try not to be co-opted by arguments and agendas, especially those I may agree with as a citizen. Of course, it is a great temptation, in troubled times, to try and use the theater as a weapon. My theater, however, is more temple than weapon, a place to come together where we perhaps will see ourselves and others, see our world and other worlds, while all the time relishing that we are not alone in our fears and confusions, as we sit together struggling to understand and work things out.ln other words, my theater is not a place to shout in, or be lectured at, nor where we go to be incited, rather a place to come together, sit among strangers in the dark, and recognize the complexity of the world before us. As the great English playwright, Harley Granville Barker, wrote over a hundred years ago: ‘Dramatic art is the working out – in terms of make-believe – of society itself.’

THE PLAYS: A RHINEBECK PANORAMA

Each of these plays is set at a distinct moment over nine months of the nation’s 2016 Presidential election: the Friday after ‘Super Tuesday’ when primary season was in full swing; the middle of September when the general election was in full swing; and Election Day itself. When first performed, neither the characters nor I (nor the audience) knew what was going to happen during this memorable election, nor what would happen on Election Day itself. So in part, they constitute three real time

snapshots of one family’s life during this past election year.The subtitle for these plays is Election Year in the Life of One Family.Given the anxieties we all faced as we approached a resolution to this election and now given its unsettling conclusion, it is completely un-derstandable that the subtitle for these would be misread as simply the ‘Election in the Life of One Family’. But these plays follow not just an election, but one year in the lives of these characters, a year which reveals their hopes and losses, their fears and resiliency, and how these entwine with a political season few of us ever imagined. My goal then, in part, has been to weave together an unruly and contentious national event with the small (and large) events of private life, and in doing so, perhaps portray a world where the personal, the cultural, the societal, the familial, the artistic, the political are viewed not as separate cate-gories, but as dependent aspects of each of our lives. At least that has been one ambition.

These plays are set in Rhinebeck, New York, a village, one hundred miles north of New York City, a place The New York Times once called ‘the town that time forgot.’ lt’s a very small place, yet the more I write about it, and populate it with my characters, the larger it has come to loom in my imagination.Years ago, I came across a very large (8’ by 3’) watercolor panoramic panel hanging in the Museum of London, in England, with the fascinating title: The Rhinebeck Panorama. Unfortunately, from the perspective of someone who lives in Rhinebeck, this massive watercolor does not depict a panoramic view of my tiny Hudson Valley village, but rather is a birds-eye view of London, England, in the 1830s. My village, I have learned, did however give this picture its name; in 1941, this work was discovered in the attic of a Rhinebeck house, lining the inside of a barrel of pistols. [How it got there, and why pistols were kept in a barrel, remain mysteries.] Still the phrase ‘Rhinebeck Panorama’ has stuck with me and, I think, inspired me, suggesting, as it does, a grand view of wide expanse, but of a very small place.Another ambition for these plays, I think, lies somewhere within this phrase.

FOCUS: DEMOCRATIEEen aantal festivalkunstenaars kijkt dit jaar naar de problemen waar westerse democratische landen mee te maken heb-ben. De Franse filosoof Alexis de Tocqueville bewonderde de democratie vanwege de maatschappelijke gelijkheid. Ook zag hij de gevaren ervan. Regisseur RomeoCastellucci maakt dit jaar Democracy in America, naar het gelijknamige boek (1835) van De Tocqueville. In The Gabriels be-schouwt regisseur Richard Nelson het af-gelopen Amerikaanse verkiezingsjaar door de ogen van een doodgewone familie. Andere kunstenaars richten zich op de problematiek in democratische naties, zoals de vluchtelingenkwestie in de voorstellingen van regisseurs Dieudonné Niangouna en Thomas Bellinck. Weer anderen tonen de dreiging van geweld (Demolishing Everything with Amazing Speed), tirannie (Octavia) of het vorm-geven aan activisme (The Tempest Society). Filmregisseur Julian Rosefeldt kijkt in Manifesto naar de relatie tussen kunst en samenleving. Twee nationale theater-huizen met elk een eigen staat van de natie: My Country van National Theatre uit Londen en The Nation van Het Nationale Theater uit Den Haag. Beide voorstellin-gen tonen een verscheurd land waarin nie-mand, van politici tot burgers, verantwoor-delijkheid lijkt te durven nemen. Ten slotte zijn er voorstellingen waarin democratie in de vorm is doorgevoerd: het publiek kan – als het dat wil – actief betrokken worden, als voorbijganger, deelnemer of activist. Deze kunstenaars moedigen het publiek aan om de aloude hiërarchie tussen het publiek en de artiesten ter discussie te stellen.

FOCUS:DEMOCRACYAt this year’s festival several artists are looking at the problems faced by Westerndemocracies. The French philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville admired democracy for its social equality. He saw its dangers too. Director Romeo Castellucci is making Democracy in America, based on DeTocqueville’s eponymous book (1835). In The Gabriels, director Richard Nelson reflects on the recent American election year through the eyes of an ordinary family. Other artists focus on controver-sies in democracies, such as the issue of refugees in directors Dieudonné Niangouna and Thomas Bellinck’s performances. Others address the threat of violence (Demo lishing Everything with Amazing Speed), tyranny (Octavia), or shapingactivism (The Tempest Society). In Mani-festo the film director Julian Rosefeldt examines the relationship between art and society.We are presenting two national theatre production companies, each with its own state-of-the-nation piece: My Country; a work in progress by the National Theatre in London, and The Nation by the Dutch National Theatre in The Hague. Both performances show divided countries in which no one, from politicians to citizens, seems to dare to take responsibility. We also believe that it is important to explore democracy of form. Members of the audience can get actively involved as a passer-by, parti cipant, or activist, if they so wish. Our artists encourage you to question the old hierarchy between the audience and the artists.

GeefwetSinds 1 januari 2012 is het nog aantrek-kelijker om het Holland Festival te steunen vanwege de Geefwet die tot 1 januari 2018 van kracht is. De Geefwet houdt in dat giften aan culturele ANBI’s met 25% verhoogd mogen worden tot een maxi-mum aan schenkingen van € 5.000 per jaar. Schenkt u meer dan € 5.000, dan kunt u het resterende bedrag voor het reguliere percentage (100%) aftrekken van de inkomstenbelasting.De voordelen van de Geefwet gelden voor alle belastingplichtigen (particu-lieren en bedrijven) en zijn van toepas-sing op zowel eenmalige als periodieke schenkingen.

Voordeel van een periodieke schenkingEen eenmalige gift is beperkt aftrekbaar voor de belasting. Het totaal van de gif-ten op jaarbasis dient hoger te zijn dan 1% (drempel), met een minimum van € 60 en kan tot maximaal 10% (plafond) van het inkomen worden afgetrokken. Een periodieke gift is een gift waarbij voor een periode van ten minste vijf opeenvol-gende jaren een gelijke uitkering wordt gedaan, vastgelegd in een periodieke akte. De gift is volledig aftrekbaar zonder aftrekdrempel of aftrekplafond.

Donations to the Festival are tax-deductible Between 1 January 2012 and 1 January 2018, a special tax law is in effect which makes it more advantageous to make charitable donations. Called the ‘Geef-wet’, this law allows you to claim your deductions to cultural organizations with ANBI status with an additional 25% for tax benefits (a total of 125%). The Holland Festival has such an ANBI status. The fis-cal advantage applies to donations that total a maximum of € 5.000 annually. If you donate more than € 5.000 to regis-tered charities, you can deduct the remai-ning amount for the regular percentage (100%). The advantages of the Geefwet apply to all taxpayers (private parties and businesses) and are applicable to both individual and periodical gifts.

Advantages of a periodical gift Restrictions apply to deductions for indivi-dual gifts. Individual gifts are tax-deduc-tible when the total amount of gifts given in one year surpasses 1% of your income, with a minimum of € 60. The amount given above the minimum threshold is tax-deductible. The maximum deductible amount is 10% of your threshold income. There are fiscal benefits for periodical gifts with an annuity construction for five years and upwards. If you choose to sup-port the Holland Festival for a minimum of five years, your gift will be fully tax-deductible.
