From a wilderness, in whioh the prelent building of the

College of Hawaii _aM situated, the grounds hilve been reclaimed,

grassed and planted. Of oourse not all the land available tor p1ant-

? 'ins has thus been made use ott

The writer was appointed a msmber ot the Building and

Grounds Co~ttee ot·the College of Hawaii, and shortly atter that

started with the plan ot laying out an arboretum on the College Cam- ~

pus. The first plants Bet out were two Cyola circinalis the gitt

of the Board ot Agrioulture and Forestry. TheBe .ere ~lanted in the ta]:l 01' 1915. Sinoe that time many acrea have been r.o1ai~ed and

planted with palma, trees aJid shrubs •. It was thought besi not io -~ ..

start a regular botanio garden as the cost ot maintaining such .ould

be prohlbi ti ve·. An arboretum was more within probable meansi ·pro~

bablen, as at the time ve s~arted planting, there were no tunds at

all available ro~ suoh a purpose. During the years 1913 and 1914,

tho'writor made a trip around the world, paying all Qf his expenses

himself tor the purpose or getting into personal touch with the lead-

ing botanic gardens of the world, especially those situated in the

tro-pics. . ~ .

He was coamdssioned by the U. S. De~~ment of Agr1bulture,

Bureau of Plant Industr,y a collaborator and proper eredentials were

, furnished him by the Department. He was also commissioned by the

Boa.rd ot Agriculture and l10restry of this Territory and by the College

at Hawaii. The result of this trip waa the importation of many val-

uable and rare plants, both of ornamental and economic: value. These

wore caree. fOl' b)' the Doard of Agricul ture, and half ot them were

afterwards turned over to the writer tor the College grounds. In

1916 during the summer vaoation the writer.;::'ttsiied the Ph11i1)p1ries,

Borneo, ' Celebes, .Tava and the Kalay Penin'aula tor the purpose of in-

troducing 1)lants, mainly from the Botan10 Gardena, at Buitenzor.g in

lava. He returned with ,a number ot valuable plants among them such

cho1ce ones. as Amberst1a nob1l1s, Brownea hybrida and Cyrtostaohys

Kendah. In the summer of 1917 he visited the southern part ot Cali-

tomia, looking over the nurseries at Santa Barbara. He returned

with a large assortment ot plants partly bought at Santa Barbara and

partly donated by the Golden Gate Park Conservator".

As land gradually was cleared and became available tor

p1ant1ng these were set out. A green house_(lath house) was erected ,

. in which the young plants and larger potted plants could be pro-

tected and properly cared for till the1r tinal 1)lant1ng on the College

grounds. This green house while ot great help has been q,uite in-

adequate as far as size 1& concerned. Though many plants have been

set out, new ones are still reoeived (mos~ly grown trom seeds lmported~

and at no time was the green house partly "VB.cant, on the oontrary,

1t'was so crowded, even to the floor, that in order to give the plants

a proper chance , the more hardy ones were pla.ae4 -out.ide; ,seed boxes

with seedlings had always to be kept outside on account of lnck of

apace. It is urgently requested that an addition be erected to the

green house in order properly to c~re for the plants.

Plant. to the Arboretum have been contributed trom the

f'ollo"lng:

Gerrit P. Wilde~, Mrs. F • .T. Lowrey, Krs. M. K. Foster, Mra. .A. 4.9.eger Mr. Dona~d Maointyre, The Board of Agricult~re
