Welcome You’ve heard all of us on the radio, now read our articles in print.   Welcome to 1Mag –  the official magazine of 1Radio.   You might be thinking, didn’t I step down! That’s correct, but next thing you know I’m back in the mix, mainly because 1Mag has been quiet and I wanted to continue the idea that I started!   So what do we have for you in this issue? We have Spike giving you the latest news and opinions surrounding the world of the 1, a Youtube music spotlight, festival reports, the 1Radio newbie’s and lots lots more!  So sit back, and enjoy the read!  Bye for now,      James Van Hinsbergh Editor 

Welcome to the News Bits Well we have been away for a while now but it’s great to see the 1Radio mag back up and running! If you’ve not been involved or haven’t read our little offering before, what a treat we have in store for you this month.  It’s great to see loads of new talent taking up the mantle and joining the ranks of 1Radio. Too many to mention (and I don’t want to miss anyone out). Enjoy your broadcasts and we look forward to you all bringing some fresh and explosive new shows to the 1.  

Holiday season brings out the best! Over the past several weeks 1Radio continued its tradition of broadcasting over the holiday weekends to a specific genre or theme.  Summer sunshine weekender and the Best of British went down a storm. Loads of new shows and different takes on the themes in true 1Radio fashion. Don’t worry though if you missed out on the weekenders, we are always open to suggestions and ideas. Rumour has it there is a “Made in the USA” event coming up! Watch the forums for details. And keep up the good work.   

Did you realise? 1Radio is heard by more than 1000 people each week. That’s an awesome amount of individual hits to an internet radio site.  And it’s all down to the effort and programming you put into your shows. The hardest thing with any TV or radio broadcast is getting “bums on seats”. I’m sure you don’t need to be a seasoned broadcaster to tell you it’s far more fun to do a show when you have an audience.  Oh what I would give to have all the 1000 people tune in at the same time!! But there is still more you can do! Don’t forget to use all the tools available on the site. Get people to sign up

for your reminder email. Send an ecard. Use Facebook, twitter, family, friends ‐  bribery usually works for me. But turning up and playing a show is only 70% of what it takes. Build up your listener base as best you can and believe me before long we will all be pulling in more listeners. 

 Once upon a time..... It’s great to see the forums buzzing with ideas and banter. Although once upon a time it was a place for a whole lot of whinging and finger pointing. The forums are a great way to bounce ideas and keep your fellow presenters and listeners informed of goings on. Yes listeners have access to the forums...surprised? Well just a reminder to be positive and remember someone who reads the forum could very well be listening to your next show!  

1Radio awards. Hosted by our very own master of ceremonies Mr Timothy “vakart” Longhurst.  There was a bunch of awards up for the taking. With 2 or 3 nominees in each of the 14 categories, the evening soon flew by. Thanks to Tim for his hard work producing the show (a lesson for us all), and everyone who tuned in to see who won and who was nominated. With so much new talent joining 1Radio in the last few months, I predict a lot of new category winners in next year’s awards. But if you want to listen to the show again, the links are available in the forums and here is a quick rundown of who won what.....  

 Oh and the most annoying presenter went to… Auto DJ… I think! 

 

Dream team goes from strength to strength Have we mentioned Saturday mornings? If you haven’t tuned in from 8am UK time Saturday mornings, then you don’t know what you’re missing.  Do you remember that feeling you used to get when you woke up on a Saturday, and knew tiswas was going to be on? (Or multi coloured swap shop if you were a grammar school oink). Well we have our very own Saturday morning crew to wake you up ‐ Will Reid, Chris Matthews and Colin John (we could do with Sally James as well). Will blasts you out of bed with Club 80’s, tunes to get you broken in ready for Chris Matthews, and you need to be ready and ears well loobed up for Chris! Then just when you think it’s safe, along comes Colin John to make your ears bleed with some classic rock! All in all an orgasmic mix of music, chat and some of the best entertainment the 1 can offer. Starts 8am every Saturday morning. It’s what weekends are all about!  

Late night UK time Whilst waking at strange hours this past few weeks. I’ve been tuning in at silly o’clock UK time. Whilst the UK sleeps 1Radio rolls on. Imagine my surprise when I found a re‐run of the Kenny Everett  tribute show, and an interview with a pirate, a visit to the 1Radio sound museum and more… all of which kept me awake not able to go back to sleep until I had finished listening. Other great shows in the middle of the night UK time include Sean in the morning, the Smooth Music Show with mal, Totally Tez and a gem of a show with Joey. Our US presenters pull out all the stops, and make 1Radio a truly 24 hour experience!

Get Social! 1Radio’s DJ Vakart looks at the power of social networking

How to get more fans?

Music is a dominant topic of conversation among Twitter users who are now sending upward of 200 million tweets a day.   That’s a 1000% increase over the last 30 months. It's an increasingly essential part of the artist and record company marketing mix.  The major trending topics in the first half of 2011 were singer Rebecca Black and "Femme Fatale", the recent comeback album of Britney Spears. British band Mumford & Sons were amongst the Top10 most popular entertainment topics.  Four of the top five Twitter users, based on the number of followers, are musicians. The chart is led by Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, marginally ahead of Barack Obama.  Elsewhere on the web, Eminem's official page on Facebook has been ranked as having the third largest number of "likes" according to the Guiness Book of Records. Eminem's page sits just ahead of Facebook's own page and the fan page devoted to "Texas Hold'em Poker".  No one can deny that the social web is becoming an increasingly important influence in promoting artists and their  

                music. It allows fans to get ever closer to their idols and helps build the power of word of mouth promotion.   Nielsen research reports that Facebook is now the second most popular website in the  UK  behind  Google.  In  May  2011 alone, Twitter's UK audience  increased by more than 30%.  Myspace,  one  of  the  founding  social media  sites  has  also  been  in  the news.  Although  its  popularity  is waning,  it  received much  coverage when  it  was  recently  sold  to Californian  digital  advertising agency  Specific  Media.  Although now  less  popular  with  fans, industry  insiders  still  think  the company  has  potential  in  the social media space.

An Interview with...

Show Bio The Music Platform is my show which is normally broadcast at the weekends around midday. I really like variety so you'll hear all types of music in my show; depending on the mood at the current time. I really like to balance the music with talk, so I'm always up for a bit of banter and for you to join in aswell. Another feature is 'The Chillout Zone' which is where the whole show is chillout music and no 

talk. This is just to get people relaxed and I normally 

broadcast these in the early morning.   

What drew you to 1Radio?  Well it all started at Freecast Radio, where I found my feet and grew confidence in presenting. That led me on to 1Radio, which I left not long after I joined. I then went on to 

Stream Radio as I liked the 

scheduling more, 

having the exact slot every week. But ultimately, I was drawn back to 1Radio as it is miles ahead of other internet radio stations and has an excellent community and listener base. Overall I weighed it all up and felt that not having a definite slot every week was worth sacrificing for this brilliant station. Never looked back from that.  

What are your main music tastes?  I’ve always said that I like most genres when it comes to music and this makes it really hard to point out my main ones. It ultimately depends what mood I am in. I’ll outline a few artists from the various genres I love: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack Johnson, David Gray, The Killers, Pendulum.  

You are editor of the 1Mag. What do you enjoy about being the editor?  Well 1Mag is great simply because I love seeing the end product of what community effort can achieve. Saying that, it can be a struggle to get commitment sometimes, but once everything links together, it gives me a real sense of achievement. You can’t forget Tim though as the magazine wouldn’t be the quality it is without this guy!  

Who are your favourite DJs to listen to?  As I said in my piece for the 1Radio awards show, I find that Tim, Chris Matthews and Gaz are my top DJs throughout the station. Of course, the community of DJs are great but these three really give something extra in my opinion. They are also very well prepared, have great feature and produce some real professional sounding shows.  

Can you give us a brief insight into the equipment you have in your studio?  In my studio I have quite a basic setup. A single Shure SM58 vocal microphone is the key to everything. It does what I want, when I want! Other than that it is linked up to a mixer and audio interface. A dinosaur of a PC with dual monitors and adequate speakers. But most important of all, we have my tea mug, which provides a boost of energy at frequent intervals in the show!!

              What makes your show unique and interesting to listen to?  I feel that my shows are interesting as I try to make them appealing to everyone, engaging with the audience and having fun along the way. I think the main area of presenting for me is to have fun. If I didn’t enjoy it, there wouldn’t be much point in presenting. I feel that my passion is strong and I hope that people notice that in every show I do. Finally, what makes my show unique is the depth I go into with regard to Formula One. Even though I make my shows for everyone, this part is very specific and I convey my opinions to the audience on a regular basis.  

Last I remember you were in education. What are you studying, and what is your dream career? I am currently in Year 12 and have just finished by AS Level exams. I take Mathematics w/ Mechanics, Physics, Computer Studies and Media. At the moment I am currently looking into various universities to study Computer Science. Finally, my dream career would be to work as part of a leading Formula One team, as the adrenaline of the pace you need to work at and the major decision you need to take really motivate me.

Obituary

Singer, songwriter and instrumentalist Andrew Maurice Gold died of a heart attack on June 3 in Los Angeles. He was 59.  Gold was best known for a string of seventies hit albums thats spawned the singles "Lonely Boy", "Never let her slip away" and "Thank you for being a friend". The latter song would later become well known as the theme song to "The Golden Girls".  Gold’s second chart success, "Never Let Her Slip Away", was his biggest British hit, reaching No 5 in the charts in March 1978.  Andrew Gold was an accomplished,  all‐round musician, composer and arranger and his production skills in the studio helped to propel Linda Ronstadt to stardom. Over the years, he also worked with a long list of major recording artists including the Eagles, Jackson Browne, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Cher and Celine Dion.  Gold was born in Burbank, California. His mother was Marni Nixon, the singer who dubbed the musical performances of Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, Deborah Kerr in The King And I and Natalie Wood in West Side Story. His father was the composer Ernest Gold, who scored the movie Exodus.   

Andrew was 13 when he started writing pop songs, although he never learned to read music. At Oakwood School in north Hollywood, he introduced himself to the singer Linda Ronstadt when she played a gig there with her group the Stone Poneys. Gold later confessed, "My girlfriend was pissed off at me cos I kept checking out Linda's legs".   By the early 1970s Gold had joined the Ronstadt 

band, and in 1974 played a variety of instruments and made the musical arrangements for Linda Ronstadt’s breakthrough album Heart Like A Wheel, as well as for her next four albums.   When their group split up, Gold teamed up with guitarist Kenny Edwards and singer‐songwriters Wendy Waldman and Karla Bonoff to form Bryndle (the "y" in the name was in homage to The Byrds).   In 1973, Gold became the leader of Linda Ronstadt's band; his work was featured on Ronstadt's 

1974 solo breakthrough "Heart Like a Wheel" and on her hits "You're No Good" and "When Will I Be Loved." He made his debut on the Asylum record lavel in 1975.  During the '80s, Gold formed the band Wax UK with former 10cc member Graham Gouldman. The band released three albums. Bryndle regrouped for two new albums and live appearances during the '90s.

In the 1990s Gold, recording under a pseudonym, released an album of original songs in the style of his favourite Sixties’ bands, among them The Beatles, The Byrds and The Beach Boys.  Over the years Gold worked with many other major artists, among them Art Garfunkel (where he played all the instruments on "I Only Have Eyes"), Nicolette Larson, Stephen Bishop, Vince Gill, Celine Dion, Aaron Neville, Wynonna Judd, James Taylor, Paul McCartney, Jackson Browne, Cher, Brian Wilson and Japanese star Eikichi Yazawa.  

GOLD TRIVIA  In 1979 detectives hunting the Yorkshire Ripper, a serial killer of prostitutes in the north of England, received a cassette tape in the post. When they played it, they heard a nameless man with a Wearside accent taunt them over their failure to catch him. Puzzlingly, the recording ended with 22 seconds of Gold singing Thank You For Being A Friend.   In 1996 Gold’s was the first human voice to be "heard" on the surface of Mars, when "Final Frontier", his theme from the American television series Mad About You, was used to activate a robot for the Mars Pathfinder space probe.

It would be easy to list a load of dance tunes as “Summer Anthems”, but I have decided to pick five tracks from five unique points in my life that have meant something to me. 

Bananarama – Cruel Summer (1983)  A track that takes me right back to my schooldays with memories of long lost friends, long forgotten crushes and a time when life seemed simple and carefree.  One of the stand‐out tracks from the first incarnation of Bananarama.  

 Madonna – La Isla Bonita (1987)  “Tropical the island breeze, All of nature wild and free, This is where I long to be, La Isla Bonita”.  Lyrics don't get more summery than this.  A well deserved number one for Madonna from the summer of 1987, when I fell in love for the first time!  

 Mystic – Ritmo De La Noche (1990)  The summer of 1990 saw me hitting the clubs with unrelentless energy.  I could have picked 100 tracks from that summer, but this is the track that spoke to me of sunshine, long nights and other things too controversial to print!

A track that seemed to be playing everywhere during my first summer in Bristol – a summer of parties, barbeques and meeting loads of new people, some of whom would remain friends forever, and one of whom I would eventually marry.

The debut album from the Scissor Sisters was never off my car stereo during the summer of 2004.  After a hellish few years, my life was back on track, and I was finally living with the true love of my life – who incidentally is not called Laura!

A little about me: Hi, I’m Karla Bluebird. I’m 28 years old and I am Native American, Ojibwe to be exact from Northern Minnesota, US.  My biggest interest is music ‐ Anybody who knows me will tell you just that ‐ I love all sorts of different music, but my true passion is Hip‐Hop.   My favorite emcees are Blu, Phonte from Little Brother, QRock, Murs & Tech N9ne. My Favorite producers are 9th Wonder, The Alchemist and Timbaland (before he went pop lol).   

How I found 1Radio:  I’ve always wanted to be a radio DJ for as long as I can remember. I had just gotten my Numark Mixdeck and I was looking for a place to share my mixes.  I came across a show someone had posted on Mixcloud and it sparked my interest. So with the help of Google I found the 1Radio website.   I loved how 1Radio was giving me the opportunity to finally fulfill my lifelong dream. So without any hesitation, I applied. 

         

 

 

 My thoughts on 1Radio: I love 1Radio. All the other Presenters and DJs are very supportive to each other ‐ It feels like a family.  Everyone is so open to new music; I feel like its a place I can grow musically to better myself, as a DJ ‐ With Gaz on his Rewind shows, and DJ P with his metal, I’m get exposed to new music everyday. It’s a great experience all the way thru!   I think what I love most about 1Radio is how it supports new artists – It’s a great thing giving all these unknown artists a chance to be heard ‐ I would like to see more of that.

Listeners are the lifeblood of 1Radio. This month, we meet the lady known as SB.

Meet a listener...

 About Me I’m May but most know me as Survivorsburg2006 (or SB for short).  I am a 50 year old Scot lady from the  Borders, born and bred in the Kingdom of Fife.   I’ve had a variety of jobs from Checkout Operator to Steward/Security Officer. Stewading was my favourite job, working football matches, gigs and concerts from Aberdeen To London. Due to an accident, I had to give up work. I developed Uncontrolable Pancreatitis which leaves me in constant pain.   I discovered a talent for poetry and also work as a part‐time movie extra which I throughly enjoy. My first movie role was in Stone of Destiny. The love of my life is my husband John and my dogs Buster and Taz.  

  Since I was a little girl, I dreampt of going to USA. In 2007, that dream came true when I visited San Francisco (yay 49’ers), Memphis (check out Gracelands) and Orlando where I swam with the Dolphins.  

My Interests My Interests are spiritual well being, nature and music to help others recover from Historical Trauma Abuse and Depression, which I have done through Sound and Vibration Workshops. This is something we discovered purely by accident. After 20 years of meds, I’ve been off them for 5 years. It transformed my life. My Ultimate Goals is to set up a trust so that others can go to a place for a weekend and do sound and vibration and hopefully change their life like it transformed mine.

I absolutely love 1Radio. You all make each listener feel they are part of the show with shoutouts, requests and revealing what each of us do in our lives is a  great way of sharing different talents.  I love 60's, 70's and 80's but also a wide range of music from classical to a few of the more modern tunes. Rod Stewart is a hero and I met him once. My number 1 band is Queen closely followed by Status Quo. I chatted with their security officer.  I first discovered 1Radio through talking to Mark on Twitter. I tuned in to his show a few weeks later and hung on to hear Gaz (Mr Cheeky) doing a karaoke. I stayed to find out who the f*** he was singing about.  I have most DJ's on during the day. Grieveworld will always be number 1 as that’s how I came to the 1. I also love Gaz's show had a lot of laughs. Mal is the show to chill out to, PT  does a great show from Texas  and I smile when the Doc is on ‐ even the swearing! I enjoy most of the DJ's you have but the shoutbox needs to be left on when on auto DJ so we can moan about having no DJ and keep chatting! DJ's not turning up for their shows and listening to the standby message drives me crazy.   No one does a pure Scottish Music show. With the amount of countries covered by 1Radio,  there should be a show each week showcasing the music from that country.  Lady T did this recently for Poland. I really enjoyed the modern Polish music even though I couldn’t understand the lyrics.  Another idea would be a programme called Poetry and Motion – 

poetry readings accompanied by related music and themes.  My proudest moment was being asked to write a poem for Help For Heroes Sleep Well Tonight (good causes page) then being told by a complete stranger it had reduced her to tears as it mirrored exactly how family and friends with people in the Services felt.  My most gobsmacked moment on 1Radio was listening to Grieveworld when Mark suddenly started reading my poem live on air. We sat looking at each other in amazement, all feeling very proud of ourselves. That inspired me to set up my You Tube Channel.   Thanks to everyone on 1Radio for all your support – Mark, Gaz, Mal, PT, Colin John, Johnny P, Adam, Big Tonne, Lady T and of course the dinosaur himself Ceejay to mention just a few!

Drum & Bass 1Radio’s DJ Javo looks at the Drum & Bass channels on video-sharing site Youtube

1Radio Genre Spotlight

In this edition of 1mag, I’m looking at Drum and Bass / Dubstep channels to see the range that is out there. After scouting the site, I’ve come up with my top 3 channels:  

UKFDrumandBass  UKF is a very popular youtube brand with a few different channels. I have selected this as the top channel because it delivers fresh content on a regular basis and normally before it is released, so it’s a great place to experience you new content and get a feel for the ones you like before they come out. I use  that a lot to do exactly that. I will go through their uploads, picking out the ones I like and making sure I know exactly when they will be released. A lot of the channels uploads are remixes of mainstream hits, so you can also find some of the best remixes around and provide a little variation to the mainstream song that has been remixed. Overall, it receives a 9/10, not the full 10 as there is sometimes a lack of content.  

Liquicity This is not a half as well known as UKF, but it doesn’t disappoint. Featuring a different set of artists, the channel specialises in ‘liquid’ which is a calmer drum and bass theme, one which I like very much. Unlike the others, this channel seems to have less music than the others but makes up with it by having a least 1 track every month and promotions like free downloads for specific songs. For me, it’s a 8/10 and well worth a visit!   

KODubstep Again not as popular as UKF, but probably more the Liquicity, KODupstep deals in the ‘wobs’ with their massive tunes that they decide to promote. Again, it is different from the other channels, so you’re not likely to find the same song on any of the other channels mentioned. The only things that let it down are the lack of information for some tracks 

and the frequency of new content. Overall, it deserves a 7/10  To sum up, I think all 3 channels are very good, at the peak of YouTube’s content (for D&B/Dupstep) so I thoroughly recommend that you check all three of these channels out and further you musical taste to this genre!!

Meet a DJ...

Music has been a lifelong passion of mine for as far back as I can remember. My earliest memory involving music takes me back to age five, riding around town in my sister's car. She must've been in her final years of high school at that time. There was just something wholly exciting to me about riding around in a car packed with her friends and blasting the sounds of Top 40 radio. I remember singing and shouting, smiles and laughter, and it never seemed to matter where we were headed or if we were headed anyplace at all. The same scene would play out many times as I got older, in different cars and with different companions.  Around the age of twelve I began keeping a record of what songs I liked on a weekly basis. In 2004, I began sharing these weekly entries on the Web, in what would culminate in The Songdiary Project. I continued  this routine for nearly 20 years, when in the opening months of 2011 I decided to lay the project to rest. Everything I managed to gather and post electronically can still be browsed at http://songdiary.joylag.com  I began "lurking" around 1Radio in early March 2011 and began hosting shows of my own shortly thereafter. I was first introduced to the site by Ceejay, who I had met in another web community back in 2009 where we worked together in organizing something very similar to 

1Radio (but far less accomplished). At this time I was also heavily involved in college radio, where I presented live shows and reviewed new music for airplay. My involvement with WVFS‐FM lasted from 2004 until 2010. 

 My musical tastes and the content of my shows here on 1Radio are one in the same. I like a little bit of every genre, and a whole lot of some genres, and am willing and liable to play any of it on my shows. I constantly feel at odds with the corporate machine that drives pop music and pop culture. On one hand I despise its profiteering motives, and on the other hand I can't help but admit to liking some of the products it pumps out. That being said, you won't hear much of 

it on my radio shows.  

The two shows I host regularly on 1Radio are called Decent Exposure and Nocturnal Emissions. The first one caters to upbeat tracks, while the second one does just the opposite. If there were a "mission statement" for both shows it would be the same... To expand the listener's palette by emphasizing variety above familiarity and playing tracks that are unusual but appealing.

Glastonbury Concert News...

It’s the summer’s biggest music festival... and it’s usually the muddiest

The 41st Glastonbury Festival kicked off in fashion over the week of 22–26 June. U2, Coldplay & Beyonce were the headline acts.   Other artists to appear included Primal Scream, Mumford & Sons, Kaiser Chiefs, Jessie J, Cee Lo Green, Kool & The Gang, Glasvegas, Deacon Blue, Fatboy Slim Morrissey, Biffy Clyro, Two Door Cinema Club, Elbow, Paulo Nutini, Tinie Tempah, Pendulum, Plan B & Don McLean  The 2010 attendance was 177,500 and was totally rain free, the first time in 8 years that it had happened.   

Glasto is the Largest Music & Performing arts festival in the world, Its iconic for usually being a rain soaked event despite it being held in the height of summer, and every year we usually see the images of people having a great time whilst covered in mud.  Starting way back in 1970, Glastonbury has seen iconic artists such as: T‐Rex, David Bowie, Hawkwind, UB40, Happy Mondays, Van Morrison, Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney, The Who and many many more  This years event was sold out within approx 4 hours and registrations for the 2013 event have opened already.

Game Review

History As many fans will know, F1 2010 was the first video game surrounding Formula 1 for the 360. It has also been the first Formula 1 game for console for quite a while now.   F1 2010 was fantastic, a great game for both the casual gamer and serious enthusiast. But the more people played the game, the more fault finding took place and there were clear weaknesses within the game itself. What I don’t think Codemasters expected was the knowledge and passion that most of the gamers had for the game, how they found certain aspects of the game annoying and under developed. As one of the first to pre‐order the new F1 2011 that hits September, I thought I would point out a few key features that Codemasters should address (or should have already sorted) for the new game later this year.  

Safety Car I thought I’d start with the big one. There has been and still is a lot of speculation over this feature for the new game. Initially Codemasters said that they wanted to include it but as time passed, fans believed that it wouldn’t happen until recently when a comment on Twitter reignited the debate about is it in or not! I really hope it is as it will provide a great feature into the game but on the other hand I would rather it be perfected for a later version than rush it in to this one. 

 Revised Penalty System Let’s be honest, I hate being penalised or even disqualified for putting a tyre over a corner. F1 drivers do it, so the game needs to let us do it. Of course there is a fine line between cheating and just how people normally take a corner but the system needs to be able to accurately decide what to do in certain situations. Also for instance, if you cut a corner and overtake someone because of it you should be allowed to give the place back, surprise surprise, this is what normal F1 drivers do. Overall last year’s penalties were ridiculous and it is essential that this should be sorting for the new game.

Developed Damage System At the start, I thought that the damage was good, but the more I played, the more it didn’t seem that way. I always like a challenge and also more bits to fall off the car!! So my hope is that more parts can be damaged and affect performance aswell as mechanical failures and pit stop errors. 

 Graphical Elements Just a quick word on this, the graphics seemed fantastic when skimming over but look a bit closer and you start to see the holes. I’m sure this will be improved but I would like to see a significant improvement on the graphics of the car itself. 

 Online Experience This is another big one. Multiplayer was such and still is an enormous part of F1 2010 and needs a through redesign. The waiting time is too long, people are too aggressive, there are too many connection issues and glitches and it would be fantastic to have a ‘league’ mode for all the outside leagues that people compete in. As for the foundation, I really like the idea of the four race types aswell as the custom GP and in addition to this the fact that we will now see 24 player online races will be amazing (16 of these being human players, 8 being computer AIs). Those are the main points and as I said, this is a key area to get right.

Big Tonne Big Tonne is a big force in the UK Urban Music scene. 1mag meets the man...

An interview with...

Who are you? My name is Stuart Hazell but you know me as Big Tonne.  I’m 22 and got into music when I was 16, where I made grime music and was part of a group called "The Coalition". I was part of GrimeOnline – a DJ internet radio station dedicated to Grime and had a regular Sunday Night slot on there. However, with making music as an artist being my real focus,"The Coalition" folded, I stopped the radio DJing and became part of a musical"Reshape". We make UK Garage/Urban music, with a mix of singing and MCing, we 

have a commercial edge with a dynamic urban sound.   Outside of music, I completed my 6th Form Studies in Media, Product Design and English Literature. After my A‐Levels and year completing an Art Foundation at College, Iwent on to a BA in Commercial Music at Westminster University. I have just recently qualified from the Degree with a Second Upper Grade (2.1 BA in Commercial Music). On this course I spent 3 years learning about the Music Industry, from the Law/Media/Social/Live/Marketing/Business/Studio aspects and the list goes on. When it got to my last year, I thought long and hard about what I wanted to get into once I had done my Degree. I realised Radio is the place and want to get into. I did radio for my final year and I managed to get a 1st in that :) This year, I also became part of Radio Northwick Park, a Hospital 

Radio, where I am on the Tuesday Night Request Team to broaden my Radio CV! 

 The second love of my life is Football. I am a massive Tottenham Hotspur fan and try to go to a minimum dozen games a season. I also am a qualified Football Referee, and referee youth football and the occasional men’s games at the weekends, and have done so since I was 14.  The music I like is endless. However, if I had to go on the TV programme Mastermind, I guess "my specialist subject" would be UK Grime. I love UK music alot and my taste in music is urban orientated, just like my Big Tonne Radio Shows. I love US urban music also ‐ and I love real underground urban music as well as the commercial and more popular stuff. I also love old music from Motown and Reggae to Rock and 

Pop, I love everything really, but UK Urban Music is my forte. This is also evident in my recently created blogsite where I showcase my reviews and promotions of new music from the UK urban music scene. I have reviewed Gig and live events, albums and mixtapes as well as single reviews that have all been targeted for UK Urban artists.  

Where in the world are you? I’m in West London. I have lived in the same house my whole life, and I am on virtually the last stop of the Metropolitan Line (if you know your London Underground). 30 min drive from Heathrow Airport  

How did you first discover 1Radio? I was doing radio research with the Radio Academy, and came across 1Radio. I was impressed that it was a legal station. I also liked the way in which you could broadcast and that you had to go through an audition to get on air. After getting the thumbs up from you guys, I was able to join the worldwide, extremely diverse broadcasting team of DJs and presenters here and feel very proud of what I have done on the station.  

What about the future? I’d love to see 1Radio grow. I love it but I feel it needs more promotion though. 3 years into the life of this station, it should really be pushing on with listeners and followers. I love the diverse music played on the station. You can turn on at anytime and you never know what your going to hear which is great if you are a music lover. An app for the station would be brilliant and would really benefit the station. Alot of people are listening to radio on the go on their handsets and this would progress 1Radio further and increase its appeal to listeners. In terms of how my show has progressed, its hard trying to get a fanbase going when your on at all different times. However I like the way that if you are the most listened to /most referred DJ then you get rewarded with credits, as a reward for your efforts. Not to forget the themed weekends we have on the station ‐ they are always fun to be part of!

T in the Park 1Radio’s DJ Gaz introduces you to Scotland’s biggest music event

The 2011 T In The Park Festival took place at Balado Airfield in Scotland on Friday 8th – Sunday 10th July 2011.  TITP recently retained it’s title as winners of ‘Best Major Festival’ at the UK Festival Awards.  T in the Park is Scotland's biggest music festival. It all started in 1994 

at Strathclyde Country Park  accommodating 17,000 people, before it moved to the current Balado site in  Perth and Kinross in 1997 where it now has an 85,000 capacity.  Its one of the most influential and critically acclaimed festivals in the UK.

The 18th T in the Park had over 200 artists performing over 11 stages over 3 days. Headliners included:  Artic Monkeys (Friday Headliners) Coldplay (Saturday Headliners) Foo Fighters (Sunday Headliners)  As well as many more huge names such as: Plan B, Pendulum, Tom Jones, Big Country, Beyonce, The Stokes, Manic Street Preachers, The Saturdays, KT Tunstall, Ocean Colour Scene, My Chemical Romance and Liam Gallachers new band Beady Eye.  T In The Park has now garnered a reputation of attracting the biggest stars and in previous year we have seen all kinds of artists play the festival such as Kylie Minogue, Blur, Oasis, Lady Gaga, Kings Of Leon, The Prodigy, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jay‐Z, Black Eyed Peas, The Who, Green Day, The Killers,  REM, Oasis, Radiohead,  Muse, Eminem, Coldplay, Mumford and Sons, Snow Patrol, Rage Against The Machine, Biffy Clyro, Paolo Nutini and Kasabian  T in the Park isn't just about established artists however, as part of the Tennent’s Lager’s  T‐Break initiative, previously unknown bands such as Biffy Clyro & The View have benefitted from appearing at T in the Park and went onto launch successful music careers.  Every year since 1996, T in the Park has sold out to capacity even though its 4 times bigger than when it started.  This year’s festival has been as strong as ever.

Meet a DJ...

My name is Joey Peralto, I am 47 years old and I live in Buxton Maine, USA. I had 4 older siblings growing up who all loved music and taught me to love all kinds of music, from Country to Rap.   I grew up in the late sixties and early seventies when music was growing and the radio was full of good songs on your little AM radio.   All through my life I have loved radio, I have listened to  great morning DJ teams and even old radio program dramas and comedies. About 3 years ago I discovered Justin.tv and I started playing music over the air for the first time with a show called Joey's Crappy Playlist, I found I really loved doing it. Soon with my Friend Shawn (ESPY) we created Play List Chat Club  where we had revolving DJ's do shows on one 

station…  

Soon after that I left PLCC and started Manic Radio, a shoutcast with my Friend Ricky, and for the first time I was able to talk on the air and I realized I loved it. I moved to maine a couple of years ago and just now have started back in Radio with 1radio.   My show the Midnight Special, airs most weekends around midnight EST so I don't get a ton of UK listeners.   

I play themed shows and interact with people in the shoutbox. I love the interaction as much as the songs themselves. I love doing my shows and I hope they get 

better and better
