Chowringhee Road is the arterial road running from the eastern fringes of Esplanade southwards up to

the crossing with Lower Circular Road (renamed Acharya Jagadish Bose Road). It is the single most

important spine of the metropolis of Kolkata.

One of the first areas of expansion by the British, Chowringhee still remains very much the heart of

Kolkata and the place of choice for many large business houses.

    The issuesplaguing ZoneA.Chowringhee

    01. Certain old buildings flanking the main thoroughfare are ill

    maintained .

    02. The biggest problem is hawker menace which encroaches the entire

length of sidewalks, even in front of Indian Museum, leavinglittle or

    no space for pedestrian movement.

    03. Roads devoid ofregulatory markings and signage.

    04. Haphazard traffic control and lack of public awareness leading to

    traffic congestion especially near crossings.

    05. So called Metro Channel (political demonstration area )abutting the

main road near a very important multi-crossing,disturbs the whole traffic

    pattern frequently.

    06. Hoarding / banners indiscriminately mar the beautiful facades.

Policy enforcement regarding occupiers co-operation for

Discipline enforcement on varied aspects ranging from garbage disposal to movement on roads & walkways through media

awareness campaigning & widespread use of directional signage.

Hawker menace may be tackled through interactions between the authorities and the hawkers and ensuring a participation of hawkers
