Catholic Lectionary. (2009). Bellingham, WA: Logos Bible Software.Psalm 91:12, 1016Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble.

1 You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,2 Say to the LORD, My refuge and fortress, my God in whom I trust.10 No evil shall befall you, no affliction come near your tent.11 For God commands the angels to guard you in all your ways.12 With their hands they shall support you, lest you strike your foot against a stone.

13 You shall tread upon the asp and the viper, trample the lion and the dragon.14 Whoever clings to me I will deliver; whoever knows my name I will set on high.15 All who call upon me I will answer; I will be with them in distress; I will deliver them and give them honor. 16 With length of days I will satisfy them and show them my saving power.

God is a shelter and prayer is the refuge almost everyone seeks in time of trouble. It is sad to say that during times of prosperity few pray but it takes times of trouble to shake the prosperous out of their tree of their complacency. In this psalm we see the writers faith in the Almighty only as a protector who is always able to carry us through the dangers and fears of life.

In verse 11 we hear how God gives us angels to protect us. (c.f. Hebrews 1:14). Examples of guardian angels can be found in the Scripture (1 Kings 19:5; Daniel 6:22; Matthew 18:10; Luke 16:22; Acts 12:7) and are always doing the will of the Father and Jesus tells us that it is His desire that each of us be united with Him in heaven (Jn. 17:24).

It is comforting to know that God watches over us even in times of great distress and fear (Mt. 28:20).When reading verses 14-16 we read how God promises to:Deliver usProtect usWhen we call He will answer. He will be with us in time of trouble. He will rescue those of us who believe in Him.

The psalmist then ends with the most important promise of all, I will satisfy him, and show him my salvation.
