BASIS Components
• BASIS Overview
• Sizing the SAP System
• Installation Concepts
• SAP System Landscape
• Client Administration
• Change Management in SAP (Software Logistics)
• Users and Authorization
• OSS and Saprouter
• Role of BASIS Consultants in SAP Implementation
BASIS Overview
• What is BASIS ?
• What is an SAP instance ?
• SAP’s three tier architecture
– Presentation Layer (SAPgui)
– Application Layer
– Database Layer
BASIS Components
BASIS Layer
R/3 Application Components(Logistics, Accounting, HR etc.)
Database Layer
Operating System / Hardware
AB
AP
Workbench
Application Layer
• Dispatcher
• R/3 Work Processes
–D Dialog
–V Update
–E Enqueue
–B Batch (Background)
–M Message
–G Gateway
–S Spool
Database Layer
• Consists of a relational database (Oracle, Informix, DB2 etc.)
• Every work process makes a connect to the database
• Communication between Application Layer and Database Layer is
on Open SQL
• Table Types in the SAP
– Transparent Tables (1:1) relation with the RDBMS Data Dictionary
– Table Pools
– Table Clusters
SAP Instance
• Every SAP installation must have a Central Instance
• There can be multiple dialog instances (application servers) but
never more than one central instance in a R/3 system
• An R/3 system can have only a single database which belongs to
that system.
Sizing the SAP system
• SAP system sizing can be done broadly using 2 methods
–User Based sizing
–Transaction based sizing
• Factors that are considered during the sizing–Number of modules, components add-ons etc.–Number of users–Concurrency of users–User categorization (Low, Medium, High)–Expected database growth–Load from batch processing–Load from reporting–Level of fault tolerance, availability required
Installation Concepts
• SAP Installation is carried out using a tool called R3SETUP
• Supported modes of installation
–Central Instance + database
–Stand alone Central Instance
–Stand Alone Database
–Dialog Instance (Application server)
–Stand alone gateway server
System Landscape
• Different Types of Landscapes Supported
–Single System Landscape
–Two System Landscape
–Three System Landscape
–Multi system landscape
• Setting up the Transport Management System
• System Change Options
Client Management and Administration
• Client is an independently accountable business unit
• Standard Clients available in an SAP System
• Client Creation
• Client copy and copy profiles
• Client Deletion
• Client Roles and Change Options
• What is a good client deployment and refresh strategy ?
Software Logistics
• Change Management in SAP is achieved through the Correction
and Transport System
• Change Management in SAP has three components, Transport
Organizer, TMS and Transport Tools (tp, R3trans)
• SAP provides a mechanism of Change Requests for recording
changes made to the SAP system and to move these changes to
other R/3 systems
• Types of Requests
• Concept of Original / Non-original objects
• Creation and release of Change Requests
• Importing Change Requests into Target Systems
• Transport Management System
Users and Authorization
• Concepts of Authorization Objects, Authorization, Profiles.
• All authorization in SAP system are managed through the Profile
Generator
• Security Implementation in SAP
OSS and SAPRouter
• OSS (Online Service System) is used for message posting, object
registration, license keys, notes etc.
• Some of other support offerings through OSS is Remote Support
sessions, Earlywatch alerts, Earlywatch sessions, Go-Live check,
Upgrade checks etc.
• Currently OSS connections are available on Frame Relay Link,
ISDN.
• SAPRouter is like a firewall which allows you to restrict access to
SAP systems from end users
• Has a provision for building ACL’s which can block users based on
IP addresses, TCP ports, subnets etc.
Basis Role
• Preparation Phase–System Sizing–System Landscape–Client Deployment and Refresh–Transport Strategy–Backup Strategy–Disaster Recovery–Daily Operations Strategy
• Installation and Commissioning of SAP systems• Database Administration• Software Logistics Management• Security Management• Maintenance & Support
