IT will be a tightly contested affair in round three of the 2016 Queensland Saloon Car series, with the category returning to Queensland Raceway at the Shannons Two Days of Thunder meeting this weekend, June 11 and 12.

The previous occasion Queensland Saloon Cars featured at the 3.12 kilometres Ipswich circuit was as part of a contingent of 13 Queensland-based drivers who joined the Aus-tralian Super Six Touring Car Series grid for round five of their series at the Shannons Nationals last year.

The Queenslanders impressed on the big stage, with four drivers featuring in the top six com-bined qualifying times leading into the first race. The best of the local contingent were Ashley Jarvis who finished third outright for the round, and 2014 Queensland Saloon Car champion Gary Beggs who made his name known with a podium finish in race three.

This year the category appears at Queensland Raceway in its own right, fresh from the CAMS State Championship meeting at Morgan Park a little over two weekends ago, where Queensland HQ Holden series convert John Carter secured a round victory on his series debut.

The CAMS State Championship leader will not join the 13-car grid this weekend, while Gary Beggs (134 points) heads to QR in the lead of the club championship in the Coates Hire VT Commodore ahead of Coleby Cowham (114 points) in the Escape Energy AU Falcon and Shayne Hine (107 points) in third in the Spray-tech AU Falcon.

PORSCHE Carrera Cup driver Fraser Ross is set to join a 23-car-field at round three of the 2016 Australian Trans-Am series at Queensland Raceway, for the Shannons Two Days of Thun-der on June 11 and 12.

A number of new and returning faces will be joining Ross on the grid including New Zealand Historic Muscle Cars competitor David Sturrock, driving the 2014 championship winning 1970 Ford Mustang and seasoned Australian Trans-Am competitor Shane Wilson, in a Parnelli Jones tribute 1970 Ford Mustang.

The 2014 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia champion will be driving a Group N specification 1968 Ford Mustang previously driven by Drew Marget and Jim Richards, with support from action camera brand 360fly.

“It is a good Group NC car on paper but it will be interesting to see how it goes against the bigger-engined Trans-Am cars. It has a 302, it has good horsepower and I’m looking forward to racing the ‘old girl’ this weekend,” said Ross.

“I haven’t raced her for quite some time and it is a bit different to racing in a Porsche, I’m looking forward to a fun, stress-free weekend.”

In the lead up to the round, Ross turned some hot laps in the Mustang at a ride day at Sand-own Raceway for his Carrera Cup supporters.

“It ran well and was a big hit with those who had the chance to sit in the passenger seat.

Despite racing more modern high-performance machinery in recent times, Ross has extensive experience in the historic touring car scene, with his first foray into historic racing at the 2010 Phillip Island Historics. The highlight of his time in the Mustang Trans-Am was qualifying on the front row at the Shelby American Auto Club (SAAC) 36 con-vention at Virginia International Raceway, having never seen the track before, in a car he had never driven.

Once back on home soil, Ross went on to join the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge before graduating to Porsche Carrera Cup with a GT3 Cup Challenge title under his belt.

Defending series champion Charlie O’Brien (200 points) leads the Palmer Steel Industries Trophy series with Brett Curran in the Angliss Meats Mus-tang equal second with John English in the Logan Village Smash Repairs Firebird (146 points). Alwyn Bishop leads the Loaders ‘R’ Us Sportsman class (188 points) in the Blake Machinery Group/Agilis Accountants Mustang ahead of Martin O’Kane (157 points) and Colin Velt (132 points) while defending 5 Litre champion Sean English (179 points) leads the Mulch Smart 5 Litre Classics in the MPP Race Fabrication/Discount 4X4 Mustang ahead of Mark Bowtell (160 points) and Mike Collins (146 points) heading into the Shannons 2 Days of Thunder.

Group N

Relive the racing era of the 60’s and 70’s with Group N Historic Touring Cars this weekend. Group N originated with the vehi-cles called the Appendix J. Appendix J were vehicles from the early to mid 60’s. Many were driven to the track, raced and driven home. In later years, this group became known as Na and Nb. Na is represented by production touring cars available prior to 31st December 1957. Nb is represented by production-type vehicles prior to 31st December 1964. Later on, another class was added that called Nc. This is for vehicles that competed between 1st January 1965 and 31st December 1972. Our group accom-modates a wide variety of cars that raced back in the late 1950s to the early 1970s.

This is round 4 of a 7 round series spon-sored by Black Truck Sales and Isuzu Ute. For this round, there will also be a 20 lap Endurance race on Saturday afternoon that will run into the night. This race is a handi-cap race that means anyone can win out-right. A handicap race works with the slow-

est cars going first at timed intervals and the fastest cars starting last. There is always a close finish to these races.

This weekend there will be 30 cars racing on the track with battles all through the field. The Ford’s are well represented with the Falcon of Graeme Wakefield and Wesley Charles. Also flying the Ford flag up front is Brad Harris and Grahame Wrobel both in Mustangs. In the under 3Lt class keep an eye on the quick Cortina’s of Allan Saunderson and Bob Stewart.

They won’t have it all of their own way though with a gaggle of Holden Torana’s with drivers Simon Phillips, Peter Baguley, Ethan Lind, Noel Davis to name a few look-ing to split thing’s up. Who will win the weekend?

Historic Touring Cars will be racing at the Lakeside Classic next on the 15th & 16th of July.

Queensland Touring Car ChampionshipThe Queensland Touring Car Championship returns to Queensland Raceway Two Days of Thunder for Round 3 of the series. After multiple front running cars experienced a variety of mechanical difficulties at Round 2, the champion-ship has been blown wide open with few points separating the top 10 cars. Group A/Outright category is currently led by Brett Boulton in his BMW closely followed by Nev Haines (VT Com-modore) and Michael Woodcroft (LX Torana), with the rest of the top 10 not far behind. Improved car reliability in Round 3 could see a number of championship position changes by the end of the weekend. Also tightly contested, Group B is led by Greg Lee in the 635 BMW, followed by Stuart Walker and Dean Rice in their Commodores.

Round 3 will see two races on the National Circuit and two races on the Sprint Circuit. With 30 plus

cars on the grid, there are guaranteed to be plenty of battles right throughout the field. Some fast cars to watch will be Brett Kennedy with his VT Com-modore returning after engine dramas ruined his Round 2 campaign. He will be back with even more horsepower and be looking to make amends for a zero point return from last round. Another car to keep an eye on will be newcomer Dean McMa-hon’s 680 horsepower yellow Monaro. If he can get that much power to the ground, expect him to be at the pointy end of the field. Karl Begg in the Motorsport Zone E36 BMW will as always be a contender, particularly after some recent success at Morgan Park competing in Improved Produc-tion. The QTCC field will put up much more of a fight, but expect Begg to be amongst the leaders.

TA2’s Make their DebutRACEWAYSQueensland

MORE THAN RACING

Following expansions to Sweden, Canada and Costa Rica, America’s Trans-Am TA2 formula will launch in Australia in 2016.

To be known as TA2 Racing Australia, the series pays homage to the muscle car rivalry of the SCCA Trans-Am Series established in 1966, featuring the ongoing battle between the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, with the Dodge Challenger thrown into the mix.TA2 draws its global success from a focus on cost control and parity with an emphasis on driver competition. The TA2 formula utilises a space-frame chassis constructed by Howe Racing Enterprises, tted with a controlled GM Motorsport Division LS3 engine package developing 525 horsepower.

TA2 is set to be managed by the management group of the Australian Trans-Am Series, a tribute series to the Trans-Am era of the late 1960s and early 70s. The inaugu-ral series takes place at Queensland Raceway and Lake-side Park, with optional events at Wakeeld Park yet to be conrmed. TA2 plans to work with established motor-sport authorities to expand the series interstate with a national set of rules and regulations.

Former touring car driver John English, a member of the Trans-Am management group sees a great future for both classes.

“The Australian Trans-Am group have agreed to merge with the new TA2 group of Trans-Am cars to form a strong alliance under one management umbrella and we welcome them on board for what will be an exciting growth journey for both groups.

“The traditional ’63 to ’74 Trans-Am cars along with the 2016 version of the Howe-built TA2 cars will be a strong force and I look forward to an exciting future for both groups,” said English.

Peter Robinson, the importer of the TA2 cars stresses that the TA2 formula allows drivers to concentrate on racing, not the nancing of it, while showcasing their skill in modern machinery.

“TA2 cars have simple rules, these include no modica-tion to any part, no professional drivers, only 98 octane pump fuel and one set of tyres per weekend. Let’s go racing!” said Robinson.

“Our TA2 package for Australia is built from the best advice and components for the level of motorsport we wanted to be involved in. These cars are well powered and at 1250kg with big brakes and wide slick tyres, you will see some fast racing.

“There will be close competition and plenty of over-taking opportunities because of car setup dierences, driver ability and of course race day luck.”

The cars are constructed by Howe Racing Enterprises in the United States, a stalwart of Trans-Am racing internationally with a worldwide tally of TA2 machines now exceeding 212. However, a number of local companies have contributed to the development of the Australian version of the TA2 technical package.

World-renowned Australian cooling systems provider PWR have developed a tailor-made cooling system for TA2 Racing Australia, and impressed the American constructors to now oer the PWR kits to American TA2 teams.

Supplying the race seats, safety harnesses and window nets is New Zealand-based Racetech, who also supply their range of safety equipment to the Supercars Championship. While a partnership with Gold Coast-based Motorsport Brakes involves track support and engineering assistance with the Circo brake pads.

Transferring their association with the Trans-Am Series in the US, Hoosier will be the ocial tyre supplier for the series, with the TA2 cars set to run the Hoosier 3045 slicks, and the 44307 wets.

The SCCA Trans-Am Series in the 60s and 70s saw large manufacturer input and high prole drivers battling in the muscle cars of the era. Historic Trans-Am is still celebrated around the world while the Australian Trans-Am Series continues to ourish down under as a tribute to the ‘golden era’ of Trans-Am racing.

Robinson suggests the timing of introducing TA2 to Australia could not be better, and he believes that the new category will appeal to a new generation of fans as well as those who look back fondly to the days of Moat, Jane, Beechey and Geoghegan battling in the Australian Touring Car Championship.

Round 3 of the Wellpro Qld Prodsports Champion-ship heads to Queensland Raceways as part of the 2 days of Thunder event.

The opening rounds have been far from predict-able, as mechanical woes and o track excursions have raised the DNF count of the usual leaders. Conspiracy theorists have also suggested that race-xing has crept into the sport. Recently released grainy CCTV footage shows a man of imposing stature with a shaved head, receiving what look to be an envelope from another man with a pink pig riding a blue quad bike.In other news, the PSCRAQ committee have announced they will embark on a fact nding trip to Panama to assist in promotion of the category.

The Lubrimaxx carrot will again be dangling to encourage the fastest competitors in each group. The long straights of QR will favour those with the biggest stick and Steve Annett is favoured to be taking out the prize in the Graham Lusty Trailers GT category.

Wayne Hennig may need to pray the Annett and his monstrous V8 powered Corvette turns another driveshaft to dust if he is to extend his lead in the championship. Graham Lusty is not to be underes-timated on fast layout where he should be able to deploy all the horses in the Mosler stable to keep pace with the Porsche 911. Chris Hateld has bued the red paint o the rear bumper of his RCR Lola replica and will make the journey down the

range to join the pack.

The Williams Race Services 2B category is currently lead by Michael Antonie, however Russell Schloss and Je Hume are locked in a erce battle, and this event could make or break their season hopes. Jeremy Norris returns to racing in his Porsche 911 and Ron Prefontaine is getting straight back on the horse following his accident during practice for the last round. That horse has been downsized to a Shetland pony, as his turbocharged Mx-5 substi-tutes for the muscled - up G50 that has been spared the knackery. Dave Barram is racing Gary Stewarts yellow mx-5 against Tim Janke and stalwart Henri Van Roden.

Deckchair racing team owner, mechanic and driver, Gavin Clay holds a comfortable lead in the PHP Asphalt and Construction 2F title but in a recent interview revealed that new kid on the block Danny Karlsson is his biggest threat to future success. In Days of Thunder style, this is shaping up to be the Rowdy Burns - Cole Trickle battle with Karlsson tearing up the rubber in the quest for sharp lap times. James Hay, Paul Ansell and Tim Wallace have repaired their mazdas and will battle with Angelo Servodio, David Smith, Mark Sperling and Lisa Montgomerie.

Once again, a big thanks to Wellpro and our cate-gory sponsors Graham Lusty Trailers, Williams Race Services, PHP Asphalt and Construction and pole sitter sponsor Lubrimaxx .
