Dear Families and Friends of St. Margaret Mary,
This coming Thursday we will all cele-brate Thanksgiving. Even though it is a secu-lar holiday, Thanksgiving is the only national holiday which seems almost religious in na-ture. Don’t tell the ACLU that, but it is just about the only time when people in our country—no matter their race, religion and cultural origin—unite to express our common gratitude for what we have received.
Now, some may begin the day at church—thanking God—which is only right and just, since God is the source and Giver of all good gifts, especially life, faith, freedom, family, friends, work, leisure... Most Americans recognize this on some level. But unfortunately, it seems that many others take these blessings for granted. As our society has become ever more secularized and divided, many have forgotten God and therefore no longer recognize the myriad goods that come from Him. The loss of faith that goes hand in hand with the loss of gratitude constitutes spiritual blindness. Of course, physical blindness is severely limiting but spir-itual blindness is disastrous because those suf-fering its effects do not recognize their own dire situation: loss of faith, lack of gratitude, immorality, dissolute lifestyles—all leading eventually to the dark abyss. Those who have faith, however, are empowered to see God’s constant presence in everything around them. Therefore, they are grateful, alert to the opportunities of love and watchful for the signs of the times, and so, remain under God’s providential protection. The children of the light do not walk in the dark. So, gratitude stemming from a lively faith is one of the most
important signs of spiritual health, as it illu-mines the narrow path to heaven.
This Thanksgiving then, whether we eat turkey or tamales or Thai noodles, whether we play a game of family touch football or lay like beached whales in front of a football game, let us take a family moment to be humbly grateful to God for everything, espe-cially for the privilege of living here in the United States of America. This Thursday, why not go to Mass as a family and then later, find a moment as a family to pray gratefully together. After all, the family that prays to-gether stays together. For us Catholics, the act of thanksgiving is quite natural as we to-gether express our immense gratitude to God daily and weekly in the Eucharist, a Greek
word meaning “thanksgiving”. So thank God for Thanksgiving! And thank God for the USA!

Estimadas Familias y Amigos de Santa Margarita María,
El próximo jueves todos celebraremos Ac-ción de Gracias. A pesar de que es un día de fiesta secular, Acción de Gracias es la única fiesta nacional que parece casi de naturaleza religiosa. No se lo digas a la ACLU, pero es casi el único momento en que la gente de nuestro país, sin importar su raza, religión y origen cultural, se une para expresar nuestra gratitud común por lo que hemos recibido.
Ahora, algunos pueden comenzar el día en la iglesia-agradeciendo a Dios-lo cual es correcto y justo, ya que Dios es la fuente y dador de todos los buenos dones, especialmente vida, fe, libertad, familia, amigos, trabajo, ocio ... La mayoría de los estadounidenses lo reconocen en algún ni-vel. Pero desafortunadamente, parece que muchos otros dan por hecho estas bendi-ciones.
A medida que nuestra sociedad se ha vuelto cada vez más secularizada y divi-dida, muchos han olvidado a Dios y, por lo tanto, ya no reconocen los innumerables bienes que provienen de él. La pérdida de fe que va de la mano con la pérdida de gratitud constituye ceguera espiritual. Por supuesto, la ceguera física es severamente limitante, pero la ceguera espiritual es desastrosa porque quienes sufren sus efec-tos no reconocen su propia situación cala-mitosa: pérdida de fe, falta de gratitud, in-moralidad, estilos de vida disolutos— todo lo cual lleva finalmente al oscuro abismo. Los que tienen fe, sin embargo, tienen el poder de ver la presencia constante de Dios en todo lo que los rodea. Por lo tanto, están agradecidos, alertas a las oportuni-dades de amor y atentos a los signos de los
tiempos, y así permanecen bajo la protec-ción providencial de Dios. Los hijos de la luz no caminan en la oscuridad. Entonces, la gratitud que proviene de una fe viva es uno de los signos más importantes de la salud espiritual, ya que ilumina el estre-cho camino al cielo.
Entonces, en este Día de Acción de Gracias, ya sea que comamos pavo o tama-les o fideos tailandeses, ya sea jugando al fútbol familiar o tumbados como ballenas varadas delante de un partido de fútbol, tomemos un momento familiar para estar humildemente agradecidos a Dios por to-do, especialmente por el privilegio de vivir aquí en los Estados Unidos de América. Este jueves, ¿por qué no ir a misa en fami-lia y luego, encontrar un momento en fa-milia para orar con gratitud juntos? Des-pués de todo, la familia que reza unida permanece unida. Para nosotros, los cató-licos, el acto de acción de gracias es bas-tante natural, ya que juntos expresamos nuestra inmensa gratitud a Dios diaria y semanalmente en la Eucaristía, una pala-bra griega que significa "acción de gra-cias". ¡Así que gracias a Dios por la Acción de Gracias! ¡Y gracias a Dios por los Esta-dos Unidos!

St. Margaret Mary Church has a long-standing tradition of reaching out to share gifts with others at Christmas though our Giving Tree program. The mission of the Giving Tree Ministry is to provide Christmas gifts to children and teens in need through our Christian Service food pantry program. This program provides food items to families who are having difficulties making ends meet. Last year because of your generosi-ty were able to share toys with over 250 boys and girls in our community. We thank you for your compassion and humbly ask you to consider participating again this year.
The Giving trees will be outside the front and back of the Church, before and after all masses, for 4 weekends starting the weekend of November 18/19 through the weekend of December 9/10. The giving trees are decorated with tree tags that in-dicate the age of the child and a gift sug-gestion. Parishioners can select a tag, pur-chase gifts, and place unwrapped items under the trees the weekends of Decem-ber 2/3 & 9/10. We appreciate your gen-erous past support and hope that you will choose to par cipate once again.

On Sunday October 15, the Christian Service Food Pantry project was completed with lots of help from my troop. Of course, none of what was done could be possible if it were not for the generous donations that you all gave. LA RESPONSABILIDAD DEL CRISTIANO Por Humberto Beltrán
El evangelio, con la parábola de los talentos, re-calca la responsabilidad del cristiano. Una per-sona que hereda miles de dólares se pondrá a calcular en cómo hacerlos producir, invirtiéndo-los y protegiéndolos contra la inflación o el ro-bo; para ello tomará medidas concretas. El evangelio nos recuerda que cada uno ha recibi-do de Dios (talentos) capacidades y cualidades para trabajar; hay que hacerlas producir los fru-tos que el Señor desea y espera de nosotros. No hay que tener ociosos los dones que hemos reci-bido. El tercer siervo de la parábola, insolente y perezoso, se disculpó (como Adán) echándole la culpa a su Señor defraudando las esperanzas que se habían puesto en él. En su plan de amor, Dios repartió sus dones a cada uno; más que fijarse en la cantidad o la ca-lidad de talentos que uno tiene, lo más impor-tante es descubrirlos y hacerlos fructificar.
Sería de vez en cuando conveniente que los miembros de la familia o de un grupo de amigos, se dijeran mutuamente los dones y cua-lidades que ven en los otros, y como pueden po-nerlos en uso para beneficio de todos, especial-mente de las personas más necesitadas. Sucede algunas veces que hay personas con talentos, las cuales por vergüenza o porque nadie las invita, no pasan a la acción. Todos debemos animar-nos unos a otros a trabajar para el Señor.
Somos administradores de los dones de
Dios. En la parábola, el mismo premio, “el gozo de tu Señor”, reciben el que recibió tres y el que recibió cinco talentos, porque ambos hicieron lo que estaba de su parte. El cristiano no debe ser enterrador de talentos, ni bajo pretexto de hu-mildad ni por miedo o por pereza. Nuestra so-ciedad de consumo está llena de cementerios de talentos; en el trabajo, a los empleados se les pide que sigan las reglas y obedezcan, pero muy poco se les pide que usen su iniciativa e inteli-gencia para crear un ambiente de amistad y de ayuda mutua. Nuestras parroquias y grupos re-ligiosos deberían ser centros de oportunidad y desafío para poner los talentos de los fieles a producir a través del servicio generoso a los de-más, especialmente a los necesitados.
Aunque la parábola del evangelio no lo contempla, ¿qué se debería decir del que recibió tres talentos y devolvió solamente uno, o del
que recibió dos y devolvió ocho? El don de los talentos es un desafío a la creatividad y al traba-jo, además de ser prueba del amor y confianza que Dios tiene en nosotros. Todos hemos recibi-do muchos dones materiales y espirituales. San Gregorio, y algunos santos padres de la iglesia ven en los cinco talentos los cinco sentidos cor-porales que deben producir frutos de amor ser-vicial.
Uno puede “producir” frutos con sus
ojos, oídos, brazos, y hasta con su nariz, (no me-tiéndola en los asuntos de los otros), escuchan-do, ayudando, animando, aconsejando y corri-giendo, según se ofrezca la oportunidad. Al que crea que tiene pocos talentos habrá que recor-darle la fábula del sabio pobre, que mientras recogía unas hierbas para comer, se lamentaba de su suerte: “¿Habrá otro, entre sí decía, más pobre y triste que yo? Y al volver la vista atrás, halló la respuesta viendo que otro sabio iba re-cogiendo las hierbas que él arrojó. También ha-brá que recordarle la historia del pobre cojo que se quejaba de su suerte hasta que vio a otro que no tenía pies.
Reflexión
Todos tenemos algo y mucho que dar;
recordemos que el amor es nuestro talento de oro, el que más vale. Con frecuencia, se nos pre-sentan oportunidades de hacer el bien con nuestros bienes materiales, ya que hay muchas necesidades que piden generosidad; a veces son calamidades de orden internacional, y a veces son sucesos en nuestro propio país y en nuestra ciudad. Nadie debe buscar excusas para no ayu-dar con lo poco o mucho que tenga.
La parábola de los talentos nos anima a descubrir en nosotros la fuerza oculta de Dios y a ponerla a su servicio y al servicio de nuestros hermanos.

SAFEGUARDING GOD’S CHILDREN
All adults who are volunteering in the parish are required to take a Virtus class called Protecting God’s children. This is a three hour class that is offered at the parish and is very informative. If you are volunteering in the parish and have not yet taken the class or you took the class more than four years ago, you will need to take the class. All vol-unteers who have any contact with minors must be fingerprinted. If you are working with minors and have not been fingerprint-ed you must do so.

What’s in the bag? We hear this often. We’d seen a young couple sitting off to the side in front of Salvation Army on Lomita Boulevard. They were new to the area and hungry. They walked over to the car and saw we also had milk, toilet paper and a few items of clothing. She began to cry. They had been having a real struggle surviving and have had other people make hurtful comments to them. They were touched that a group of people took out time to come feed them. We of-fered them extras since they had nothing, but like so many of our homeless brothers and sis-ters, they only took enough for their immedi-ate needs “because there are so many oth-ers who need too”. What was important to them was what was ‘outside the bag’ – that we stopped at all, that we shared time listen-ing to them, that they felt cared for at that moment, that they could give a smile and thank you in return.
What’s in the bags? It is just a simple lunch. What comes with the bag? A hello, a listen-ing, a taste of love. Would you like to help put that simple lunch together? Would you like to help deliver them? To be God’s hands, feet and heart to our homeless brothers and sisters?
We need you. A few of our members have had life changes that have called them else-where, at least for a time. In order to keep sharing with our homeless brothers and sisters, we have made the hard, necessary, prayerful decision to cut back to every other week for a season, while we gather new members, train them and regroup. If you have heard God’s call and thought ‘some day’, please consider if this is the day. You will both bless others and be blessed. We will be in the fountain area every other Sunday at 8:30. Deacon Rick called it just a “one day” minis-try. You are always welcome, whether just to help us for one day (or to check out an inter-est in joining.)

La Iglesia St. Margaret Mary tiene una larga tradición de llegar a compartir regalos con otras personas en Navidad a través de nuestro programa Giving Tree. La misión del Ministerio Giving Tree es proporcionar regalos de Navidad a niños y adolescen-tes necesitados a través de nuestro programa de des-
pensa de alimentos del Servicio Cris ano. Este pro-grama proporciona alimentos a familias que enen dificultades para llegar a fin de mes. El año pasado, debido a su generosidad, se pudieron compar r ju-guetes con más de 250 niños y niñas en nuestra co-munidad. Le agradecemos su compasión y humilde-mente le pedimos que considere par cipar nueva-mente este año. The Giving trees estará fuera de la parte delantera y trasera de la Iglesia, antes y después de todas las Misas, durante 4 fines de semana que comienzan el fin de semana del 18 y 19 de noviembre hasta el fin de semana del 9 y 10 de diciembre. Los árboles que están decorados con e quetas que indican la edad del niño y una sugerencia de regalo. SERVICIO CRISTIANO
The morning Bible Study Group meets eve-ry Thursday (except for holidays and vaca-tions) from 10-11:30 a.m. in the St. Joseph Center. The Group, which is led by Fr. John, is continuing its study of St. Paul’s Let-ter to the Ephesians (chapters 5 and 6). All are welcome to join, even if you have missed previous meetings or have never studied the Bible before. Please bring a Bi-ble, or purchase a Bible for $10 at the first session that you attend. If you have any questions, please contact Fr. John at the parish office.

Please join us for 24 hour exposition of the Blessed Sacrament Friday, December 1st. Beginning after the 8:15am mass and con-tinue until 6:45pm. At that time we will have Benediction followed by mass at 7pm.

Please consider spending an hour in prayer either during the day in the church or at night in the chapel.
Many contemporary Christians believe Je-sus was the Messiah, but they don’t neces-sarily know why they believe he was the Messiah, much less why his first followers thought he was the long-awaited king of Israel. There are dozens of passages in the Old Testament that are interpreted as pointing to Jesus as the Messiah, but, when we turn to the Gospels, we find Jesus re-peatedly referring to himself and his mis-sion in terms of several prophecies from the book of Daniel. Challenge yourself to try to understand ancient Scripture from the perspective of Jesus!
