History of St. Catherine of Siena Parish 1949-2019

In May of 1949, Rev. John Hackett, founding pastor of the new parish of St. Catherine of Siena, began having church services in the Reseda Theater on Sherman Way and Canby. At that time, the parish was much lar-ger in area, but due to the rapid growth in population and building of homes after WWII in the San Fernando Valley, the parish needed to be divided. Some of its territory became the new parishes of St. Bridget of Swe-den in 1955, St. Joseph the Worker, and Our Lady of Lourdes in 1958. In the spring of 1950, the first Mass was celebrated in the new church that is now known as Monsignor Hackett Hall. The present church was dedicated at the Easter Mass in 1966.

St. Catherine's school was first opened in September of 1952. The buildings were completed in 1958. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet staffed the school for 23 years and moved into the new convent that was built in three stages from 1952-1956.

When Msgr. Hackett retired in 1981, Rev. Sean Flanagan became the second pastor of St. Catherine’s. He updated the church, added a kindergarten in 1982 and arranged for Catholic Charities Adeste after-school care in 1983. He purchased three small houses on Lindley Ave. that have been used as rental property and meeting rooms.

Fr. Sean recognized the gifts of Pedro and Gloria Lira and encouraged them to enter the Archdiocesan Di-aconate. Deacon Pedro was ordained in 1990, our only parish deacon for over 25 years. Deacon Pedro and Gloria Lira were instrumental for bringing the Spanish Mass to our parish. Fr. Sean was an advocate of the Farm Worker’s Labor Movement. He marched with Cesar Chavez and provided him sanctuary in one of our parish homes for a short time.

In 1994, our church and hall were severely damaged in the Northridge Earthquake. Mass was celebrated in a tent in the school yard until the hall was retrofitted to be used as our place of worship until the present church was repaired.

After leading the Church for 21 years, Fr. Sean was given the title of Monsignor. He was assigned to become the pastor of St. Bartholomew’s in Long Beach from 2002-2006. He is presently residing at the Nazareth House.

In July 2002, Rev. Paul Vigil became our third pastor. He had the rectory remodeled, refurbished the church and hall, and added the plaza area. Under his auspices, the pre-school opened its doors in 2004. In 2009, he became the pastor of St. Timothy’s in West Los Angeles.

In 2009-2015, Rev. Paul Griesgraber became our fourth pastor. Fr. Paul wanted to open the school to all who wished to have a Catholic Education. He started the Parish Adopt-a-Student Fund which was to provide financial aid to many families. He renamed the convent, calling it the Bethany House, and opened it to young adults discerning God’s call in their lives. He also initiated our daily Eucharistic Adoration in the former bap-tistery.

Deacon Phil Luevanos was made Administrator pro-tem in July of 2015.

In July of 2016, Rev. Mauricio Goloran was named as our fifth pastor of St. Catherine of Siena.

SEEING IS BELIEVING Seeing is believing! Since cellphone screens connect us instantly to social media, live TV, and loved ones’ faces near and far, “Doubting Thomas” could be our patron saint: “Unless I see, I will not believe!” But how comforting for any of us who share Thomas’s doubt, or love “doubters” who do, to see how kindly Jesus responds. By offering the very evi-dence that Thomas demanded, Jesus doesn’t scold Thomas, but seems to understand such skepticism. Could Jesus have been thinking of us, who long to believe that “Jesus is risen!” but see so much suffering, and perhaps even cause some, that we wonder, how could something so wonderful be true? In today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles, the risen Jesus’ healing love comforts through disciples who love others. In Revelation, “our brother John” doesn’t just claim he saw Je-sus alive, but passes on Jesus’ life-giving words, “Do not be afraid.” Seeing Jesus in others is believing! Copyright © J. S.
