Rusty could be one of the best bulls that Big Island has ever taken down the road. He is big…he’s stout…he has style and very structur-ally correct. Rusty has been breed Division Champion at every show he’s entered in the last 2 years, as well as Grand Champion. Sired by Jackaroo and out of Mark Gillis/Sigel Sunset Ranch’s fl ush cow Vic-toria, which has produced many award winning animals. This lot will include 100 straws of semen, already drawn on Rusty. Now is your time to buy a bull who will have a major infl uence on this breed for years to come!

The only Rusty daughter born to date and Senior Champion with her Dam at the 2011 Canadian National, she’s got a huge future ahead of her. Her pedigree shows it all, with her Dam’s sire being the direct son of Ardrossan Harmony. The only reason she’s in the sale is so Big Island can show what Rusty can produce. Do not miss this opportunity, she’s bred to be a winner.

Power packed is the only way to describe this girls pedigree. Purple banners have fi lled her past and we expect nothing less out of her offspring. Dream is sired by a fl ushmate to the Brick and is out of a fl ushmate to Sun-set Vicky 913W who has over 35 Grand Champion wins in the TJLA and is a half sister to MRG Rusty the reigning Canadian National Champion Bull. She was exposed from 11/22/12- the present to MRG Super Bad a son of ALTA Selina the Canadian reserve national champion and Supersonic a national champion himself. Dream has the true brood cow look, deep bodied, big boned, and sound, yet she has plenty of eye appeal and femininity. We hate to let this one go but Rusty always said you got to sell a good one.

FIRST TIME OFFER…. Ardrossan Nardia, daughter of Ardrossan Carla (dam of Ardossan Findon), is a very feminine cow and her fertility is expressed in both her many live calves and embryo collection. She was raised on grass in Australia and exported to the US in 2009 to offer American Breeders some of the best Lowline genetics available at Foundation Stud, Ardrossan Lowline, at the time. She is the dam of Ardrossan Jamberoo, who has proven himself in the US producing both Champion stud cattle and viable Grass Finished Commercial stock. Jamberoo also carries the Heparin Protein, which enhances fertility, especially with se-men used in AI, as well as increases fertility in heifers. Ardrossan Lincoln has proved himself over many Stud and Commercial cows at Ardrossan. He improves length, Rib Eye Area and balance to his progeny and has a wonderful temperament. Ardrossan LuLu is a half sib of Findon Royale. This same mating of Judos and Findon em-bryos was offered by Ardrossan Stud at the 2007 NWSS Lowline Auction and brought $3,100 per embryo, a price which has not been equaled. Lulu is a larger framed cow who has devel-oped into a valuable addition to our Ausmerica herd after being imported in 2009. Ardrossan Lincoln has proved himself over many Stud and Commercial cows at Ardrossan. He improves length, Rib Eye Area and balance to his progeny and has a wonderful temperament. 36 The Lowdown on Lowlines
A western Nebraska ranch boosted annual profit by 17% by using half-blood Lowline cows to produce more pounds of beef/acre.
Loretta Sorensen - Sep. 1, 2009, Beef Magazine
It was their search for the best way to merchandise the grass covering the rolling hills of their Cody, NE, ranch that led Jerry Adamson and his son Todd to Australia several years ago. That’s where they discovered what the Adamsons say are the purest Angus bloodlines in the world — Lowlines.
“We needed 1,150-lb. cows that consumed less grass than a 1,400-lb. but produced nearly as heavy a calf,” Jerry says. “We found what was probably the largest full-blood Lowline bull in Australia and brought home 750 units of semen. Using a half-blood Lowline cow and a modern-day crossbred bull, we’re weaning calves nearly the same size as the larger cows pro-duced. We’ve tried to be conservative in our estimates of increased profits with these genetics, but we have seen producers who have achieved a 20% increase in profits with this plan.”
Todd headed up the research that outlines the Adamsons’ production inputs and profits sce-nario. He says they based their projections on the fact that the average cow consumes 2.2% of her body weight in dry matter every day.
“Most university figures agree with that number,” Todd says. “We know producers raising all breeds of cattle have been retaining their biggest heifers for replacement females over the last 40-50 years. That means cows and bulls have gotten bigger and bigger, but efficiency has been left behind. Figures that told us how many pounds of beef for every acre of grass come from bigger cows revealed that smaller cows actually produce more beef per acre, increasing profits at a minimum of 16.7%.”
To implement their plan to reduce their herd’s cow size, the Adamsons used Lowline bulls on their first-calf heifers. Doing so, they eased the calving process for the heifers and retained heifer calves from the cross to begin developing a herd of 1,150-lb. cows.
“The beef industry has been using weaning weight as a measuring stick for efficiency,” Jerry says. “A better efficiency measure is the return on grass per acre. In our scenario, we based figures on calves that were 30 lbs. lighter than the calves out of 1,400-lb. cows.
“But calves out of our half-blood Lowline cows are nearly as heavy as those from the larger cows. We didn’t develop this program with the idea of producing grass-fed beef, but it certainly works for a producer who wants to get involved in that kind of program,” he adds.
The Adamsons were confident they’d be satisfied with Lowline genetics because they are Angus cattle. While they downsized their cows, the Adamsons have retained desirable Angus traits that include good milking, easy fleshing and docile nature.
“Lowlines aren’t a new breed,” Jerry says. “In the late 1930s, the Australian government brought a herd of registered, line-bred Angus cattle from Canada to the Trangie Agricultural Research Center. The herd was divided in half and the only selection criterion in both herds for the next 58 years was frame size.”
One of the herds was bred to determine how large a frame could be achieved through the breeding program. The other herd was bred to attain the smallest frame size. The former were called Highlines, and the latter referred to as Lowlines.
“In 1998, the research project was ended and the government planned to terminate the cattle,” Adamson says. “When the public discovered the plan, there was an outcry for the Lowlines because the public perceived them as very appealing. As a result, the Australian government put the Lowlines up for sale, and some of the cattle were imported to America.”At their Rocking J Ranch, the Adamsons have retained nearly 300 half-blood Lowline cows
37The Lowdown on Lowlines
and 20 full-blood Lowline cows in their herd. Within their three calving units, the Adamsons produce approximately 2,450 calves/year. Of those, 300 have Lowline influence and the remaining 2,150 have Chiangus, Maine Anjou and Simmental influence.
In the last five years, Rocking J Ranch and its partner George Jenkins of North Platte, NE, have shown their Lowline cattle nationwide, winning championships at every major Lowline show. Their full-blood Lowline bull, nicknamed The Brick, has been crowned Grand Champion or Reserved Grand Champion at every major Lowline show in the U.S.
“The Lowline show, with 254 head in competition, was the second-largest breed show at Den-ver in 2008,” Jerry says. “Lowlines are beginning to show up at cattle shows across the country and a lot of Midwest fairs. At the 2007 Denver Fed Beef Contest, held in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show, our pen of half-blood Lowline steers raised at the Rocking J Ranch placed second to the Grand Champion Entry.”
Meat produced from Lowline-influenced cattle falls into the fine-textured category and is very tender, Adamson says. He adds that the combination of increased profitability of Lowline genetics and high quality of Lowline beef gives producers two highly desirable traits for current beef markets.
“The meat is extremely palatable,” Adamson says. “Everyone comments on its tenderness.”
The Adamsons offer percentage and full-blood Lowline bulls, retaining the majority of their heif-ers. They expect demand to grow as producers realize the benefits of smaller-framed cows. Jerry notes that producers interested in downsizing cows need to factor in their bull’s maternal bloodlines in order to be successful.
“Perception is a big driver in decisions about genetics,” Jerry says, “but the facts about the total pounds of beef produced from an acre of grass are the best measure of profitability.”

40 A Diamond in the Rough
February 2012Recently, Kris Ringwall, North Dakota State University, Dickinson Extension Research Center, spoke at the American Lowline Annual Meeting during the National Western Stock Show. The Research Center has used Lowline cattle as a part of their crossbreeding system in their commercial cow herd. Here’s some of the things Kris had to say;
“There are a lot of great things going on in the beef business right now. I hope to stimulate some thought from everyone with the discussion and the story I have to tell.
What is right in the beef business? That is a really big question. There are lots of things that are right in the beef business,” states Kris. There are a lot of different environments and a lot of different production systems in today’s beef business.
“There are a couple of questions that get asked periodically in the beef business: How big? How small? How much muscle? We ask these because we have to raise them and they have to give us something to eat.” Kris is quick to point out, “I come at this from the commercial side of the business. Where do things fit from the commercial side of the business as it relates to beef production?”
Kris gives more input on the commercial approach to the cattle business, “I look at things from a Beef Cattle Systems Evaluation. What kind of system works? Where do certain types of cattle fit within a system. In order to answer these questions, I like to establish usage – is there a use for the cattle, do the cattle have something to offer? Once we have established that there is a use for the cattle, I like to establish a use – where do they fit?”
The carcass data from our commercial herd really points out that there is a use for the Lowline cattle. The research center used Lowline cattle from 2004-2007. “You’ve all been there, you have the Lowline cattle standing next to the larger, conventional cattle and someone asks – what are those?” And people begin to question if they are big enough. We used Lowline bulls on conventional commercial cattle to produce the F1, first cross cattle and followed them through the feedlot. The F1 progeny were frame 4-5 and had finished weights from 1100-1300 pounds. If someone says ‘they will never grow up’ they are wrong, don’t believe them. With final weights of 1100-1300 pounds they can definitely fit in the industry.” The cattle graded 69-100% Choice so they met the quality grade requirements of the industry very well in addition to the market weight.

“So you can’t just walk away from cattle with this kind of data and say they don’t fit, that they don’t have a place in the industry. They will fit and they offer some options in the industry. If you look at the industry – we are in the cow business,” Kris continues, “It is a forage-based business, a grass-based business. The cost of doing business probably triples when cattle go into the feedlot with the cost of grain. So, we really have to look at the cows producing on grass.”
“We, the research center, took a couple of years off from using Lowline. We went back to using calving ease bulls from some other breeds. We had some people looking at us funny – asking what are you do-ing? People walked by your cattle and asked what is this? Then we had something happen that really was one of the things that turned our heads. We were using these calving ease bulls and ended up pulling lots of calves. A lot of them were hard pulls. So, after not using Lowline for 2 years, we got back in. We looked at those F1 Lowline females and they had grown up and were pretty productive cows. We had been using Red Angus on those F1 Lowline females. One of the things we were constantly watching was ribeye area. We had tried to moderate frame on the cows one time before and absolutely lost muscle. That is the easi-

est thing to do in the cattle business is to downsize frame and lose muscle. And we did not want to do that,” Kris concludes.

“So where do the Lowline influence females fit? We had established usage on the males and determined they had a place in the business. What about the females? We bred the F1 females to either Red Angus or Angus calving ease bulls and we were quite pleased with the resulting calves. What really impressed us was the average cow weight of the F1 relative to the weight of the calf they produced.”
“The other thing that was impressive was the acres per pair that were required to run the F1 compared to the conventional pairs. You really have to look at the acres required to run a cow when you look at the differences in frame size.”

Acres/Pair 12.5 10.1
Gain/Acre 23.6 32.4

“We have about 80 head of F1 Lowline females. We know the Lowline influence will reduce cow size. It will reduce calving issues. We produce more ribeye area/hundred weight. We produce more gain per acre. And the Lowline influence creates management options that we can implement. We have an opportunity to breed Lowline bulls to conventional heifers. The male progeny can be marketed through traditional chan-nels. The F1 females from this cross – ½ Lowline and ½ conventional heifers become your replacement females in a terminal Lowline herd where all offspring from these F1’s are marketed. This beef cattle sys-tem results in shaving 300 pounds off your cow size while maintaining muscle and producing mainstream industry carcasses.”
Kris wraps up his discussion on the Lowline influence at the Dickinson Research Center, “The ½ blood Lowline is really a diamond in the rough, she is really somewhat undiscovered. Our story says the F1 Lowline female makes a terrific cow herd – they really do. Your challenge is to breed more heifers Lowline to make the F1’s and let people try those F1’s. You need to tell your story – they work, they really do.”
42 A Diamond in the Rough
February 2012Recientemente, Kris Ringwall, North Dakota State University, Investigación y Extensión de Dickinson Cen-ter, habló en la reunión americana Lowline anual durante el Stock Show Nacional de Occidente. El centro de investigación ha utilizado ganado Lowline como parte de su sistema de cruzamiento en su manada comercial. He aquí algunas de las cosas Kris tenía que decir;
