The LeMoyne House in the City of Washington is Pennsyl-vania’s first National Historic Landmark of the Underground Railroad. Only about six or seven other such sites exist in the entire United States.

The stately stone house, located at 49 East Maiden Street in downtown Washington, Pennsylvania, was built in 1812 by John Julius LeMoyne, the father of Francis Julius LeMoyne. Both father and son were practicing physicians, but it was the courageous Francis Julius LeMoyne who, despite the strict Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, risked his personal freedom and fortune to do what he knew was morally right — take a stand against the institution of slavery. This successful 19th Cen-tury doctor, reformer and builder of the first crematory in the western hemisphere, opened his home and properties as stops along the Underground Railroad, the series of safe hiding places for runaway slaves as they trudged north on their precarious journey to Canada and freedom.

The father of five daughters (and three sons!), he also believed in and promoted education for women, spe-cifically helping to found the Washington Female Semi-nary. Always a supporter of education, this successful physician funded several chairs at Washington Col-lege (now known as the prestigious Washington & Jefferson College), started Citizens Library, a free public library for the people of Washington and neigh-boring communities, and founded LeMoyne College (now known as LeMoyne-Owen College) in Memphis, Tennessee, predominantly for the education of blacks. The LeMoyne House is now a museum filled with period artifacts and dedicated to Dr. LeMoyne’s memory.

It is open for guided tours year round, Tuesday through

Friday, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., and Saturday for group tours (20 or more) by appointment only. Walk-in tours are also welcome and special group tour discounts are available. Saturday tours are available for groups of 20 or more.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF RAISING ALPACAS!

“It tickles when an alpaca eats out of your hand,” Lena warns everyone who visits her alpacas. Several people agree and laugh after the tickling begins. Folding the alpaca fleece back to reveal the skin and the lovely, clean fleece is an amazing experience for all ages. As the cameras start clicking and visitors experience the thrill of hugging and stroking the alpacas, everyone is in awe of their gentle nature. Sometimes an alpaca may feel relaxed enough to sit down and allow everyone to sit around with them. It makes for quite the photo-op! Lippencott Alpacas is a visitor friendly farm and welcomes all groups large and small. A nominal fee of $3.00 per person is charged for groups. Make sure you call for a reservation (724.852.4084) to get the most out of your farm visit. Memories are made at Lippencott Alpaca Farm!

Lena and Philip Galing own the only alpaca breeding farm in Greene County. Lena is the fourth generation to continue the farming experience on her family farm. They currently own 22 alpacas with six mothers expecting crias (babies) in mid July. They sell alpacas to those interested in owning these magnificent creatures and they offer special pricing and package deals. All sales include professional, individualized, and hands-on instruction on alpaca rearing and herd management. They go out of their way to ensure new owners have a successful and enjoyable experience. If interested, call them to arrange a farm visit!

Each year Lippencott Alpacas hosts a FREE weekend open house. This year it is September 26-27 from 1:00 to 5:00 each day. Learn about alpacas throughout the day. Get your hands into alpaca fiber with instructors who knit, crochet and spin and more! Participate in a variety of fiber related activities for any age. Enjoy a lazy hayride to the highest point on the farm and take in the majestic Southwestern Pennsylvania countryside. Buy children’s books from local Greene County author, “Uncle Dave”. His next book, “Cotton Candy” (the pink alpaca) will be available for sale. Eat a tasty hotdog from Moore’s Hotdogs or sample wine from Thistlethwaite Vineyards. Tasty homemade apple pies, candies & ice cream are available along with unique items from other local vendors. This year, the Lippencott Alpacas Knitting Herd will raffle off a handmade knitted alpaca throw made of knitted squares with intermediate cable and pattern designs using shades of green, blue, raspberry, heather and white – Stunning! A kids hay-sliding area is always popular. Watch for surprises throughout the day!

“Touching is Believing” is the focus in the Farm Store. Alpaca naturally wicks away moisture and tends to be softer

WASHINGTON, PA

David Bradford was a successful lawyer, businessman, and Deputy Attorney General of Washington County. Construction of his house on South Main Street began in 1786 and was completed in 1788. His home reflected his high social standing, not only by its size, but also by its fittings. The magnificent mahogany staircase and the interior wood finishes show remarkable craftsmanship. The stone for the exterior was quarried near Washington, while the interior decorations came from the east and had to be transported across the mountains at great expense. It was, and is again today, an 18th Century architectural showpiece. This was all the more striking at the time, because Washington consisted largely of small, rustic, log buildings. During restoration of the house, a tunnel was discovered that appears to have led to what was then a steep ravine nearby. It is thought that this tunnel was constructed to provide a means of escape if this obviously wealthy house came under attack.

David Bradford and his family lived in this house from 1788 to 1794. However, his residence was cut short because of his involvement in the Whiskey Rebellion. Local residents and landowners had longstanding grievances, caused in substantial measure by their isolation on the frontier. There were many land title issues, caused by competing title registries in both Virginia and Pennsylvania, and a host of absentee landlords (including George Washington). There were no local federal courts, which necessitated prolonged and burdensome trips to Philadelphia for trials. The area was still in danger of Indian attacks. And to make matters worse, the federal government imposed a high excise tax on whiskey.

This tax was particularly onerous because the cost of shipping local grain to the East for sale was very high. Local farmers could sell their grain crops for more (and lessen their shipping expenses) by converting their grain into whiskey. So high taxes on this product were seen

as a blow directed principally at frontier communities like Washington. When federal tax collectors appeared in the area to collect these taxes, local mobs drove them off and worse (including tar and feathering one poor official). In 1794, President George Washington decided that the new federal government could not tolerate such lawlessness and ordered 13,000 troops to the Washington area. Upon learning that he would be arrested, David Bradford fled south to Spanish West Florida (which is present-day Louisiana). He took up a new life there and, in 1797, completed a home in St. Francisville. His wife, Elizabeth, and children joined him shortly thereafter. Eventually, David Bradford received a pardon for his role in the Whiskey Rebellion.

The house had its hard times. It suffered its greatest damage when converted into a furniture and coffin store in the early 1900’s. In 1959, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission assumed control of the house and supervised a

The David Bradford House and Washington & Jefferson College are excited to welcome Benjamin Franklin to this year’s Symposium on Life and Customs of Western Pennsylvania. Benjamin Franklin, known as the “First American,” made the first major donation to Washington Academy, which is now Washington & Jefferson College. The donation of 50 pounds was used to purchase books for the library. Trustee’s of the academy also consulted with Franklin during their search for a headmaster.

Mr. Park Burroughs will be discussing the research techniques he uses when attemption to locate infromation from the 18th and early 19th centuries. Record keeping during these centuries was usually sparse and Mr. Burroughs has spent a great deal of time delving through the archives and records of these time periods.

Mr. Rob Windhorst will disucss General John Neville and his involvement in the Whiskey Rebellion. General Neville was the regional inspector for the excise tax in Western Pennsylvania and his home, on Bower Hill, was the site of largest confrontation during the inssurrection.

Mr. Marc Henshaw will be discussing river travel on the frontier during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Rivers were the easiest mode of transportation and became the major sources of trade for farmers in the Pennsylvania frontier.

restoration back to its original 18th-century design. The house is again furnished as it would have been at the time it was built. The furnishings also reflect Bradford’s place in society. Landscape work in the rear of the house led to the discovery of an old well. It was repaired, and a well house characteristic of Bradford’s time was constructed. This fine example of gracious frontier living is complemented by a garden of plants, herbs and flowers, typical of the 18th-century.
