REAL PEOPLE REAL PRESENCE

Living in Mercy

What does the Kingdom of God look like? We

pray today in the Preface at the outset of the Eucharistic Prayer for:

a kingdom of truth and life,

a kingdom of holiness and grace,

a kingdom of justice, love and peace.

Catholic-Christians know and believe that we get glimpses of it all—right here, right now. We practice for Kingdom of Heaven living after death by King-dom living now. Works of mercy are cherished meth-ods, splendid ways to do this.

Prepare for next Sunday: Pick up your copy of the 2017

“Living Liturgy” missal in the hallway by Danner Hall

after Mass.

t last, the Year of Mercy is

over! Now we can all return

to our old ways of impatience, intolerance and harsh judgement…. As you know, Pope Francis desig-nated 2016 to be an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, concluding with today’s Solemnity of Jesus Christ, the King of the Universe. The pope felt compelled to declare a holy year in response to the world’s increasing cynicism and indifference to the sufferings of others. Catholic Christians needed to counteract that trend, he said. “The Church’s very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compas-sionate love.” The motto for the year was “Merciful like the Father,” recalling the compassion the father showed his wayward son in the Parable of the Prodigal Son. Pope Francis reminded us that we must model forgiveness:

“Jesus affirms that mercy is not

only an action of the Father, it

becomes a criterion for ascertaining

who his true children are,” he wrote.

“In short, we are called to show

mercy because mercy has first been

shown to us.

“Pardoning offenses becomes the

clearest expression of merciful love,

and for us Christians it is an impera-

tive from which we cannot excuse

ourselves. At times how hard it

seems to forgive! And yet pardon is

the instrument placed into our

fragile hands to attain serenity of

heart. To let go of anger, wrath, vio-

lence, and revenge are necessary

conditions to living joyfully.”

~“”Misericordiae Vultus “

Indeed, forgiveness is difficult! When the Year of Mercy began a

year ago, I was filled with ideas about offering a workshop on the art of forgiveness, sharing incredible stories of mercy I’ve experienced, and inviting parishioners to tell their own stories of receiving God’s com-passion through others But then, as they say, “life got in the way.”

o here we are, at the end of the Year of Mercy, after the

distressing ordeal of the Presidential Election. In some ways, the

campaign has made many of us even more callused to crass language and hurtful speech, while in other ways many of us have been rubbed raw and become over-sensitive. I think it’s wise to be aware of that. Last Sunday on Wilson Avenue, a driver tooted his horn at me because I waited a split second to move after the light turned green at

Prairie. But I was already moving before the car next to me! How dare they? I was halfway to Grand Rapids before I got beyond my indignation! Woe is me. Now that the Year of Mercy is over, the next time something like that happens I will chase that person down and give them a piece of my mind. I hope you know I am joking. I thank God for this Year of Mercy, and the Mercy of the Father. I believe God has softened my heart, and I intend to continue the hard work of practicing mercy. I’ll need God’s patient compassion every day of my life, and it will take a lifetime to master being merciful. As they say at 12-step meetings: “We seek spiritual progress, not perfection.” If you don’t plan to practice being merciful like the Father in 2017, what will you practice?

Babette’s Feast

Movie & Discussion

In a remote 19th-century Danish village, two sisters lead a rigid life centered around their father, the local minister, and their church. Both had opportunities to leave the village: one could have married a young army officer and the other, a French opera singer. Their father objected in each case, and they spent their lives caring for him. Many years later - their father is now deceased - they take in French refugee, Babette Hersant, who agrees to work as their servant. After winning the lottery, Babette wants to repay the sisters for their kindness and offers to cook a French meal for them and their friends on the 100th anniversary of their father's birth. It proves to be an eye-opening experience for everyone.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT: Today we listen to the humble

confession of St. Dismas, the good thief; a confession that brought him

mercy, forgiveness and great favor by the Lord. What can his humility

teach those who seek to be good stewards? That we must give up our

self-importance, our self-centeredness, and learn to give ourselves

over to God. That God has entrusted us with everything we have as

gifts to be used in God’s service. That we treat others not with arro-

gance, sarcasm or put downs, but with reverence and respect as gifts

from God. Is it by recognizing that God is the center of the universe,

not us, and that only Christ the King can bring us genuine peace and

salvation. ~ from the ICSC Catholic Stewardship November 2016 e-bulletin

UPDATED MEDIA CENTER & POSTER CONTEST!

Have you ever wanted a “good Catholic read?” What could be

better than a stop in the Media Center to check out some new items...books, cds, and dvds. Take the opportunity to make some suggestions for materials as well or sign up to staff the center before or after Masses.

While you are there...pick up a poster sheet for the Knights of Columbus “Keep Christ in Christmas” poster contest. The contest is open to children ages 5-14. Entry forms, rules, and the poster paper are all rolled up and ready to have your child create their own Christmas masterpiece. Entries should be returned to the media center by Dec. 11. Winners of each age group will receive $25 and their poster will be sent on to the district competition for judging in January. Your child’s artwork could be the design used for next year’s contest.

KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS BILLBOARDS are scattered

throughout West Michigan. Our Knights of Columbus Council’s billboard will be located on Chicago Drive, east of Wilson Ave and be seen by thousands of people that pass from the end of Novem-ber to the start of the New Year. Thank you to the Knights who donated to this billboard fund.
