Cliff EdgeCliff Edge is about synergies. Cliff Edge is born of careful vineyard selection and the forming of relationships with our growers to allow the focus to be on quality viticulture. Distinctive parcels of Shiraz from all corners of the Grampians are blended to create a wine that is enhanced by its individualcomponents and therefore greater as a whole. Complementary elements work together to build a wine with complexity and regional character. The Single Vineyard series wines are blended with these elements in mind and deliberately highlight this process. Nowhere Creek is bold and firm, Moyston Hills is spicy and fine. In a world of multi-regional blends, standardised products and globalisation, here at Mount Langi Ghiran we are turning our attention to the finer details of what wine is all about – variety, diversity, the places and people who grow the fruit and the essence of where it all comes from.Cliff Edge is made up of 40% estate Shiraz, which are baby Langi vines… 27 year old babies! In 1981 cuttings were taken from the Langi Old block and planted on the estate at the base of Mount Langi Ghiran. There are three other key vineyards that go into the Cliff Edge blend. These are all Grampianssites, but vary dramatically in all aspects. The sites are the Langi owned and operated Gap Vineyard, Moyston Hills and Nowhere Creek

Moyston HillsIn 1999, Bruce and Kay Robinson made the decision to plant a small patch of vines on their property at Moyston, on the rolling hills east of the Grampians National Park. Their motivation was simple – Bruce had an insistent curiosity to discover what they could grow and make from the soils of their property. Surveys done of land within the Grampians suggested their property enjoyed ideal positioning for the cultivation of grapevines. A well sheltered site, the vineyard sits between two little gullies, providing protection from the southerly winds. Vines are planted on red clay loamy soils, with some ironstone gravel. These plantings are tended by hand with consideration and patience. Hand harvesting completes the picture.Wines comprising of Robinson vineyard fruit consistently demonstrate elegance and finesse, rather than brute force. The aromatics are delicate and perfumed, with spiced red currant and raspberry characters and underlying black pepper tones.

The GapIn a spectacular setting at the foot of Mount Williams Range, The Gap vineyard meets with the Grampians National park on two sides, and kangaroos and emus are frequently found between the vines. The sandstone formations of Mount Williams Range are known to be amongst the oldest and most resilient deposits of strata sedimentary rock, causing the outcrops behind the vineyard to loom dramatically jagged against the skyline. The Gap vineyard is owned and managed by Mount Langi Ghiran, with vines planted in sandy clay loams over red clays. A more rustic Shiraz, the wines show dark plum and berry fruits, with earth and beetroot elements. The Gap Shiraz in many ways resembles the style of Shiraz typical to Great Western. The earthy, plummy flavours, silky tannic structures and pronounced length of palate are resonant with the long-lived wines of this region, promising a bright future from years in the bottle.

Nowhere CreekNowhere Creek is not a gushing torrent, although grower Julian Kaye claims to catch trout from time to time. Water is an issue in the Grampians. As Julian says, “We had a full dam in ’96 and it hasn’t rained since” !On the eastern boundary of the Grampians region, Nowhere Creek vineyard lies on a warm north-facing slope. Although backing up to a granite mountain deriving from similar geological origins as Mount Langi Ghiran, the soils here are old and sedimentary. The thin red dust is primarily derived from mudstone and siltstone. The weathered parent rock sits only inches beneath the surface. These wines are big, brash and robust. Perhaps more powerful than elegant, Nowhere Creek wines are characterised by a core of black fruit, layered with liquorice and a whiff of bitumen. This wine promises a long future founded on tannin structure and concentration.
