2005 ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR The Arizona Diamondbacks were named the Topps Organization of the Year for 2005 during the annual Baseball Winter Meetings held in December 2004 in Dallas. It was the first such award for the D-backs, who have had a minor league system in place since 1996, with the big league club beginning play two years later. The Topps Baseball Organization of the Year Award is presented annually to a Major League organization based on the number of players in their system who have received Topps awards during the season. Points are awarded for four different minor league categories including All-Star players, Players of the Month, the Trautman and Taylor Spink Award recipients, and for Major League rookies who made the Topps Rookie All-Star team. The D-backs’ individual winners were: Phil Avlas (August P.O.M. - California League); Lorenzo Cain (Trautman Award - Arizona League); Matt Elliott and Carlos Gonzalez (Class A All-Star Team - Midwest League); Andy Green (Class AAA All-Star Team/Trautman Award - Pacific Coast League); Conor Jackson (Class AAA All-Star Team - Pacific Coast League); Miguel Montero (May P.O.M. - California League); Dustin Nippert (August P.O.M. - Southern League); and Dan Uggla (Class AA All-Star Team - Southern League). Topps is an international marketer of entertainment products, principally collectable picture cards, confections and sticker collections.

a perFecT nighT in aTlanTa Adept at setting records throughout his Major League career, Randy Johnson added something new to his impressive resume when he retired all 27 Atlanta Braves he faced on May 18, 2004, in Turner Field. At 40 years, 251 days, he became the oldest pitcher in history to record a perfect game, bettering Cy Young, who was 37 years, 37 days on May 5, 1904. Johnson’s gem was the 15th in modern day regular season history, the 16th including Don Larsen’s perfect effort for the Yankees in the 1956 World Series. Johnson fanned 13 in the 117-pitch performance which concluded with a 98-mph pitch to Eddie Perez to end the game. It was the first no-no in franchise history and first perfect game in the Majors since David Cone on July 18, 1999, in Yankee Stadium against Montreal. It was also the first perfecto in the National League since Montreal’s Dennis Martinez retired all 27 Dodgers he faced on July 28, 1991, in Chavez Ravine. The box score:

D. Baxter the Bobcat came out of the bag on June 23, 2000, at Chase Field. The idea for the mascot came from Brantley Bell, son of former second baseman Jay Bell, who explained to his dad that the team should have a “BOB” cat as a mascot since the team played in the BOB (Bank One Ballpark). Bell informed management about his son’s idea and the mascot was developed. Today, Baxter has gained acceptance throughout the baseball world for his athleti-cism and an infamous “fur” ball. In addition to his numerous game-day responsibilities, Baxter also serves as an ambassador for the D-backs organization, venturing off the field to visit hospitals, schools, community festivals, and corporate functions throughout the Valley and the state of Arizona. At every home game, Baxter can be found signing autographs and taking photographs with all of his adoring fans. For more information on Baxter, call (602) 462-6630.

HOW TO FIGURE

Joe Black On May 17, 2002, Major League Baseball and the Arizona Diamondbacks suffered a great loss with the passing of Joseph Black, Jr.. He began his playing career in the Negro Leagues and shuffled through various professional leagues before making his Major League debut in 1952 with the Brooklyn Dodgers as a teammate of Jackie Robinson. In his rookie season, Joe made baseball history when he became the first African-American pitcher to win a World Series game and was eventually named the National League Rookie of the Year.

Joe remained an integral part of baseball following his playing days. As Vice President of B.A.T., the Baseball Assistance Team, he dedicated his time to helping fellow baseball players who had fallen on hard times. He contributed his vast knowledge of the game as a consultant to the Commissioner of Major League Baseball. A resident of Phoenix, he worked in the D-backs’ Community Affairs department, sharing his stories as a guest speaker for numerous community groups. Beyond baseball, Joe was a pioneer in the business world and worked tirelessly to impact the civil and human rights advancements for minorities. In remembrance of Joe, a baseball bearing his name hangs from the rafters of Chase Field, along with the retired number of his former Brooklyn Dodger teammate Jackie Robinson. The Arizona Fall League honors Joe’s memory with the Joe Black Trophy, awarded to the league’s Most Valuable Player each year.

PGA GOLFER BACKS D-BACKS Starting in 2008, the Arizona Diamondbacks and former Arizona State

University golfer Chez Reavie entered into a unique partnership for the MLB club to sponsor the Scottsdale, Ariz. resident during his rookie season on the PGA Tour. Reavie wore the D-backs “A” logo on his Quagmire Golf shirts and featured the team’s “D” snake logo on his Titleist golf bag in most of the PGA Tour events in 2008 and will continue to do so in 2009. After winning his first PGA Tour event when shooting a final-round 70

to win the RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario in July 2008, the national golf press dubbed him the “Small Unit.” At 5-foot-9, the “Small Unit” moniker was a joking reference to former D-backs pitcher Randy Johnson, who is 6-foot-10. He led the RBC Canadian Open wire to wire and finished 17-under to beat Billy Mayfair by three strokes. For earning his first career PGA Tour victory, Reavie threw out the first pitch prior to a D-backs game at Chase Field in September 2008. Reavie became one of 12 first-time winners on the PGA Tour in 2008,

including four rookie winners. He made the cut in 21 of his 30 tournaments and also ranked 71st on the PGA Tour money list with $1,444,102 in earnings in 2008. “We hope that attaching our brand to one of the up-and-coming golfers

on tour will be beneficial again after Chez was one of the few rookies to win a PGA Tour event in 2008,” said D-backs’ President and CEO Derrick Hall. “It makes it even more special to know that Chez is an enthusiastic D-backs fan.” Reavie won the 2001 U.S. Public Links during his three-time All-America

career at ASU. He joined the Nationwide Tour in 2006, made the cut in his first 15 starts and finished in the Top 25 on eight occa-sions. After five placements of 13th or better in his first 12 events in 2007, Reavie won the Knoxville Open and assured himself of joining the PGA Tour in 2008.

radio Booth The Sports 620 KTAR Radio booth at Chase Field was named after John Michaelson prior to the 2001 season, honoring the veteran producer/engineer who passed away in the winter of 2000. A veteran behind the scenes in radio brodcasting for years, including three seasons on D-back broadcasts, John was a tireless worker and friend to all who came in contact with him.

Dick Dozermemorial press Box

Dick Dozer spent the majority of his life covering Major League Baseball for the Chicago Tribune, but he was hardly a stranger to the Valley. After leaving the beat of the big leagues, he arrived in Phoenix and wrote for the Gazette, while also contributing his time in organizing the annual “Dream Game,” an oldtimers contest that benefitted the Phoenix Memorial Hospital Foundation, and working with the Mesa Ho-Ho-Kams. Dozer was BBWAA Chapter President in 1976. He passed away in 1994, yet his memory lives on daily in the D-backs’ front office. His son, Rich, was an integral player in the D-backs inception serving as team President from 1995 through 2006 and has an executive conference room named in his honor.
