ProgramWelcome, Welcome Every Guest from Southern Harmony, 1835
This robust, American round is from the first edition of Southern Harmony published by William “Singing Billy” Walkerin 1835. Southern Harmony was a collection of tunes used in the teaching of sight singing and notation. In ourperformance today, we welcome all of you to our “music feast:” selections of great choral music spanning six centuries.
Je le vous derail! (I’ll Say It Anyway!) Pierre Certon (c. 1510-1572)Hinshaw Music, Inc.
Je le vous derail! first appeared in the third book of the collection “Chason nouvelles a quatre parties” compiled in Paris,France in 1539. This is a fine example of a Renaissance chanson, which like the Italian madrigal of the time, uses asecular text punctuated with “fa, la, las”.
La, la, la, do I dare, don’t I dare? Do I dare to say it?
La, la, la, I’ll say it anyway!
There’s a poor man in our village who is jealous of his wife.
He has reason to be jealous, for he is not very handsome!
Everyday he goes with her to the market and stays by her side to make sure she does no wrong!
Hallelujah, Amen from Judas Maccabaeus George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)E.C. Schirmer Music Co.
The oratorio Judas Maccabaeus (1746) tells the story of the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire around 167-160 BC led by Judas Maccabaeus, or “Judah the Hammer” as translated from Hebrew. He was given this name inrecognition of his ferocity in battle. This tale of torture, martyrdom and heroism culminates in the defeat of temple-desecrator Antiochu Epiphanes and the feast of Hanukkah. Hallelujah, Amen is the final chorus of the oratorio and issung by the Israelites. Handel wrote the oratorio in thirty-two days upon the commission of Frederic, Prince of Wales, tocelebrate the return of the Duke of Cumberland from Scotland after the victory of Cullen.
Die Nachtigal, Op. 59 No. 3 Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)Hinshaw Music, Inc.
A prolific and gifted composer of the Romantic era, Mendelssohn is often considered to be the 19th century equivalent toMozart. Die Nachtigal, written in 1843, is one of six part songs from Im Grunen. The text is by Johann Wolfgang vonGoethe.
The nightingale, she was far away, the spring lures her back; she has learned nothing new, she sings the old, well-loved songs.
How Can I Keep From Singing? Traditional Quaker Hymnarr. Daniel H. GravesErlham College Press
This hymn, often referred to as “The Quaker Hymn,” is an old hymn whose origins are uncertain. It is thought to havebeen an old Quaker hymn from North Carolina and it has been traced by a young friend to Indiana perhaps arrivingthere with the migrations during the early 1800’s. The use of lyrics openly celebrating singing is especially noteworthygiven the centuries old ban on music in the silent Quaker tradition.
Set Down Servant arr. Robert ShawShawnee Press, Inc.
Spirituals are the southern sacred “folk” songs created and first sung by African Americans during slavery. Although it isimpossible to determine exactly when the first spirituals were created, most scholars believe they appeared at the end ofthe eighteenth century and continued up to the end of legalized slavery in the 1860’s. While the songs primarilyexpressed deeply held religious convictions, they also reflected the longing for freedom, often masked in the form ofsecret codes or messages imbedded in the lyrics of the song. Shaw’s classic arrangement of Set Down Servant is adialogue between God and his people about their anticipation of finding freedom in heaven.

Sonata for Strings William HofeldtManuscript
I. Allegro ModeratoII. Andante Cantabile
III. Allegretto ma non TroppoIV. Allegro Moltos
Commissioned by WSMA with a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board for the 2007 WSMA Middle Level State HonorsOrchestra, “Sonata for Strings” is a four movement work for string orchestra that is structured on the traditional sonatascheme of a fast first movement, a slower melodic movement, a third movement scherzo, and a quick-paced finale. Theopening Allegro Moderato follows an overall ternary outline, A-B-A. The Andante Cantabile is based on the song formconcept, with each repetition of the main theme separated by stylistically similar but melodically distinct material. TheAllegretto ma non Troppo is in the form of a chaconne, with variations in the melodic material presented over a repetitiveharmonic and rhythmic pattern. The final Allegro Molto is a free-form toccata, the melodic material primarily in scalepatterns. This is the world premiere performance of this work.
West Side Story Leonard Bernsteinarr. Frederick Muller
G. Schirmer, Inc.
In creating the storyline for “West Side Story,” Leonard Bernstein transplanted the feud between Shakespeare’sMontagues and Capulets to rival Puerto Rican and white gangs in New York City. Bernstein recalls: “In New York wehad the Puerto Ricans, and at that time the papers were full of stories about juvenile delinquents and gangs.” The storygoes, though, that Bernstein and playwright Arthur Laurents had been toying with a Catholic/Jewish scenario until achance meeting in southern California and a Los Angeles Times headline about gang violence between Mexicans andwhites suddenly convinced them that this hot-button issue had greater creative potential. Their collaboration withStephen Sondheim and Jerome Robbins took shape quickly, as Bernstein recorded in his diary: “Suddenly it all springs tolife. I heard rhythms and pulses and - most of all - I can sort of feel the form.” West Side Story’s “rhythms and pulses”toss together everything from Tin Pan Alley to cool jazz to Latin dances in an eclectic postwar urban soundscape.
Procession of the Nobles Nicholas Rimsky-Korsakovarr. Merle J. Isaac
Highland/Etling-Alfred
Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Procession of the Nobles” is the most familiar segment of his opera “Mlada.” It is the orchestralintroduction to Act II, which begins with a festival of trades people. The music bursts to life with a rousing brassflourish, soon followed by the processional music, a noble tune for strings in E-flat major. This is music of color andenergy, and in the opera it is punctuated by shouts from the crowd at the festival. A central section just as vigorous as theopening leads to a return of the march tune and a rousing close.

ProgramAnniversary Fanfare Jay W. Gilbert
Southern Music Company
Anniversary Fanfare was written for the Greater Cleveland Youth Wind Orchestra in Cleveland, Ohio at the request oftheir conductor, Dr. Gary Ciepluch. Ciepluch grew up in Wisconsin and taught in Verona and Whitefish Bay andfounded this youth wind orchestra in 1988. The fanfare composed for the tenth anniversary of the ensemble is a short, energetic work based on a ten-note theme.
Three Pieces for American Band, Set No. 2 Timothy BroegeBourne
I. FanfareII. Pavan to a Ground
III. Fantasia
Lance Junior High School in Kenosha, Wisconsin, commissioned Three Pieces in 1978. According to Broege, thecomposition is inspired by “certain musical gestures found in 16th and 17th century instrumental music.” Broege wasinspired by a 16th century collection of music called the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. The contemporary-sounding Fanfareand Fantasia frame the longer and more substantial Pavan to a Ground. A ground is a form of composition in which asingle melodic phrase is performed repeatedly throughout the course of a composition. A pavan is a 16th century danceform in duple meter of slow to moderate tempo. Broege marries these two compositional ideas to create a centralmovement of interesting color and variety.
Ave Verum Corpus Wolfgang Amadeus Mozartarr. Barbara Buehlman
Ludwig
2006 is the 250th anniversary of the birth of Mozart. This is one of his last works, a choral motet, composed in 1791. Thearranger, Barbara Buehlman, was a middle school band director in Round Lake, Illinois, which is about thirty milessouth of the Wisconsin border. The simple elegance and beautiful scoring make this a wonderful arrangement in theband repertoire.
Prairie Songs Pierre LaPlanteDaehn Publications
Wisconsin composer Pierre LaPlante has written many beautiful arrangements for band. This was a commission by theWaukesha Central Middle School Band in 1998 as part of the sesquicentennial celebration for the state of Wisconsin. Itis based on two Midwestern folksongs: The Pinery Boy and The Turkey Song. Subsequently, the work is in two sections,slow-fast, with an ending the brings both of these lovely folk tunes together.
Military Escort Harold Bennetted. Frederick Fennell
Carl Fischer
Harold Bennett was a pseudonym for Henry Fillmore who was, next to Sousa, the most popular bandleader of his time.Paul Bierley, a Fillmore scholar, has written that Military Escort outsold Stars and Stripes Forever for a period of timeafter its publication in 1923. In fact, Sousa himself commented that he wished the march had his name on it. It is anexceptionally well-written march making it a wonderful closing selection for the concert.

This empty chair is one of more than 700 chairs reserved forWisconsin’s best student musicians in the WSMA High School andMiddle Level State Honors Music Projects. As you listen to theirimpressive musicianship, remember these students made lifelongfriends with others who share their passion for music. They learnedthat effort equals accomplishment, musical excellence can expressprofound emotion, and responsibility is personal.
With unprecedented cuts in school funding, quality programs like theWSMA State Honors Music Project require endowed financial support tocontinue. Very few schools are able to pay the tuition for their studentswho qualify for Honors, and these same students share their new levelsof musicianship with their school music programs. Each year, familiesshare amazing stories of tenacity under challenging circumstances ofjob losses, disabilities and more.
You Can Help! The Honors Endowment Plan offers donors the opportunity toendow and name a Chair reflecting their particular interest in oneor more of the performing groups of the WSMA State Honors MusicProject. The donor may be an individual, family or trust, and the giftmay be designated to honor the memory or achievement of others.
An Endowed Chair annually provides a full-tuition grant to astudent selected for participation in the WSMA State Honors MusicProject. The interest earned from an Endowed Conductor Chairannually pays the entire cost for the designated guest conductor.
Only the interest earned from the Honors Endowment will be usedfor these purposes. Your endowed gift will perpetuate the gift ofmusic, designated in a manner you choose.
Your gift will be a lasting investment in our youth, and you willbe permanently recognized for sharing your success with ourfuture leaders.
There are multiple endowment opportunities in the State HonorsMusic Project for all instruments, voices, and conductors. Visitwww.wsmamusic.org/foundation for currently available chairs to endow.
