Policy for Using the Propone Torch The following policy must be followed by those using the propane torch in Walter Light Hall room 618.

1. Review and post this policy in the lab. 2. Locate the fire extinguisher in the lab.

a. If you are not familiar with using a fire extinguisher, you must first complete the fire extinguisher course offered by Environmental Health and Safety - http://www.safety.queensu.ca/

3. Locate the fire alarm pull station on the floor. 4. Secure all equipment to the table before proceeding, including the propane tank.

a. The Propane Handling Act of Ontario only permits a single 1 lb canister in the lab. Additional canisters of propane must be stored in ECE Stores located in WLH 101. Propane cylinders larger than 1 lb are not permitted in the lab.

b. Empty cylinders can be exchanged for full ones in the ECE Stores. Do not dispose of empty cylinders in the lab – they must be returned to WLH 101 for proper Hazardous Waste disposal.

5. The propane torch may only be used to heat glass fibres in the lab. Use of the torch for other purposes is not permitted.

6. Users may not work alone in the lab. Always have a buddy in the lab to supervise and assist you in the event of an emergency.

7. Review the department safety manual and be familiar with its content. If you have not already done so, complete the Student / Worker Safety Orientation Checklist with your supervisor. 8. Once all of the equipment has been secured to the bench and the above policy issues have been followed, light the torch using a flint or BBQ starter. DO NOT use matches to light the propane torch.

9. Heat the fibre by pointing the flame away from your body. DO NOT point the flame toward your body. 10. Turn off the torch when done.
