2007-08 Ashland Women’s Basketball Preseason Preview The Ashland Eagles will have a much different look than last year’s team that went 14-13 overall, 7-10 in GLIAC play. AU lost two of the school’s dozen 1,000 point scorers, including first team All-GLIAC performer Amber Rall (a school-record 2,087 points) and second team All-GLIAC member Catherine Portyrata (1,123 points in three seasons). With Rall and Portyrata gone, the Eagles will have to find new ways to score, but a solid core of returning players should help out on that front. AU will welcome back junior guard Lisa Graue (Dayton, OH/Wayne) with open arms. Graue missed the entire 2006-07 season with a knee injury. In 2005-06, she was a first team all-conference honoree and was a member of the All-GLIAC Defensive Team. Graue led the Eagles in total rebounds (248), rebounds per game (7.8), steals (74), and blocks (48), in addition to scoring 9.8 ppg. in her last full season. Junior point guard Alethea Lamberson (London, OH) will run the Eagle offense. A season ago, Lamberson was first in the GLIAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.70) and second in the league in assists per game (4.78). Her 129 assists are the most at AU since 1998-99. She was also nearly perfect from the charity stripe, shooting .905 (38-42) at the line. One of Lamberson’s prime targets will be sophomore shooting guard Lacy Romine (Kettering, OH/Fairmont). Romine is coming off of a rookie season in which she averaged 7.4 ppg. and shot .466 from the field. She shot .386 (17-44) from long distance and was very good at the free throw line, shooting .861 (31-36). Ashland will use junior forward Betsy Morrison (Gahanna, OH/Gahanna Lincoln) in the paint. Trying to fill Portyrata’s shoes will be a difficult task, but Morrison will help relieve some of the pressure. Morrison tied for fourth on the team in scoring (6.6 ppg.) and was one of AU’s top rebounders. She was second on the team in offensive rebounds (41), defensive boards (118), and rebounds per game (5.9). Along with Graue, junior Lynsey Warren (Worthington, OH/Bishop Watterson) will be making a comeback after not playing in 2006-07. In 2005-06, Warren (an All-GLIAC member for four seasons on the AU volleyball team) averaged 7.8 ppg. and 5.1 rpg. She tallied double-digits in points eight times, including a career-high 24 points at Wayne State. With just one senior on the roster, Ashland will look to its younger players to provide a spark. Freshman Abby Kacsandi (Wooster, OH), a transfer from Ohio University who competed in track for the Bobcats, should see significant playing time for the Eagles. As uncertain as the season could be, one thing should be for certain: Ashland will shoot the basketball well. Last season, the Eagles shot .484 from the field and that figure was tops in Division II. It is the second straight season that AU has led the country in field goal percentage. Head coach Sue Ramsey, who is 185-150 entering her 13th season (280-278 overall in 20 years) is a big believer in taking quality shots and taking care of the basketball. The Eagles will look to do that again this year, albeit with a much different collection of players doing the scoring.

22000077--0088 PPrreevviieewwExpectations are soaring for the 2007-08 Michigan Tech

women’s basketball team. The Huskies return 80 percent oftheir scoring and four-of-five starters from a very balanced2006-07 team. Add back in senior guard Catherine Rottier, whowas an All-GLIAC First Team pick in 2005-06 before missing lastyear with injury, and the Huskies virtually have an entire startingfive with experience.

Sarah Stream was Tech’s leader a year ago as the team’scaptain, point guard, and leading scorer. The 5-7 Stream aver-aged 14.1 points and 3.1 assists per game en route to earning aspot on the All-GLIAC North Division First Team.

Sophomore Katie Wysocky was the GLIAC Freshman of theYear in 2006-07 and looks to improve on her averages of 12.5points and 7.3 rebounds per game a year ago. Versatile 5-11guard Alicia Schneider is a GLIAC All-Defensive Team selection.Senior forward Lena Widman rounds out the list of returningstarters.

Sophomore guard Katie Zimmerman, sophomore DanaeDanen, and redshirt freshman Angela Guisfredi give the Huskiesa really deep bench.

John Barnes embarks on his fifth season as MichiganTech’s head coach. He owns a 75-37 career record and has ledthe Huskies to four consecutive winning seasons. The programowns 19 straight winning campaigns dating back to 1988-89.
