Jason Kiessling and Mike Letts had good outings as well by placingthirdat165and174pounds,respectively,whileHudsonTaylorfinishedfourthat197.
Following their trip to Ithaca, Maryland returned to Comcast Pavilionto host national power Nebraska. Fans came in full force to supportSantoro'swrestlersasacapacitycrowdwatchedtheCornhuskersde-feattheTerps.
TheexperienceagainsttheHuskersprovedtobevaluableasMarylandrattledoffsixstraightdualwins following thesetbackandhadan im-pressiveeighth-placeperformanceattheprestigiousSouthernScuffle.Krom took second place at the Scuffle with Letts finishing third andKiesslingfourthintheirweightclasses.
FollowingtheNewYear'sholiday,Marylandcontinueditshotstreakindualsbywinningnineof itsfinal11matches.TheTerpsopenedACCplaywitha26-12victoryagainstNorthCarolinaonJan.13and theneasilybeatVirginiaTechaweeklater,30-9.
Saturday,January27wouldbeadaythatprovedforonceandforallthattheMarylandprogramhadarrived.TheTerpsweresettowrestleNCStateandDukeinapairofroadmatches.
TheWolfpackwasupfirstandtheystartedquicklytobuilda12-3ad-vantageearlyinthedualandkeptthenine-pointcushiontothescoreof18-9withthreematchestogo.
Taylor, rankedNo.19at thetimeat197,brought theTerpswithinsixpointswitha5-4decisionagainstNo.13RyanGoodman.JerryAfarithenpulledoffamajorupsetagainstNo.9JainorPalmaatheavyweightashewon11-5tokeepMaryland'smomentum.
Inthefinalmatchat125pounds,JamesKnoxcappedoffthemeetashe pinned Taylor Cummings in the first overtime session to give theTerpsa21-18win.
Maryland'sdaywasnotdone,though,astheyhadtohoponthebustoDurhamtotakeontheBlueDevilsinthenightcap.Onceagain,theTerpsstartedoutslowandfoundthemselvesina13-3-holeafterfivematches.
Throughouttheseason,Maryland'supperweightsdominateditscom-petitionand it rang trueagainagainstDuke.Maryland'sstarters from174 to heavyweight easily handled its opposition with a pair of pins,atechnicallfall,andamajordecisiontogetthewinfortheTerpsandimprovetheirACCrecordto4-0.
Afteranother toughwinatAmerican,Marylandclosedout its confer-enceseasonwithaneasy30-12winagainstVirginiainCollegePark.Itmarkedthefirsttimesince1974thattheTerpsfinishedperfectintheconferenceandwontheregularseasondualchampionshipoutright.
Maryland capped off its brilliant regular season wnith a win againstGeorgeMasontofinishtheregularseason17-5.Thewintotalmatchedthe best in school history and the .773 winning percentage that theTerpspostedwasthebestinprogramhistory.
TheTerpsrodetheirwaveofsuccessintotheACCChampionshipwithhighhopes.ItwasNCState,however,thatgainedsomemomentumintheearlygoingof thedayandcarried that through foran impressivechampionshipwhilecapturingtheteamtitle.
MarylandgrabbedapairofindividualtitlesonthedayasKiesslingcap-turedthe165crownandLettswonat174asbothwouldmoveontorepresenttheACCattheNCAATournament.
KnoxandTaylorearnedsecond-placefinishesat125and197pounds,respectively,toearnAll-ACCstatuswhileTaylorwasawardedoneoftheconference'sfourwildcardspotstomoveontheNCAAs.
Taylormadehistripworth-while as he went 3-2 inAuburn and came up onepoint short of earning All-Americastatus.Helost4-3intheroundof12andjustmissed out on becomingthe first Terp All-Americansince1997.
