Dear Educator:
Harcourt Assessment enters 2007 with a renewed commitment to providing the highest level of service
to our customers. We respect the responsibility of educators to make education accessible to diverse
students with varied backgrounds, languages and experiences. To assist you in providing the highest
quality education to English language learners, Harcourt Assessment has researched and developed
innovative assessment instruments to the same rigorous standards as our English language products.
These solutions will help you to understand the educational needs of ELL students, determine
appropriate instruction and quantify results.
The Stanford English Language Proficiency Test (Stanford ELP) helps teachers understand their
students’ levels of proficiency and monitor their progress toward fluency. With materials that are
designed to visually support and motivate ELL students, this test evaluates the listening, reading,
writing, comprehension and speaking skills of K-12 students.
Versant™, an automated screener of spoken language, uses innovative technology to quickly identify
which students need ESL support.
To provide a comprehensive academic achievement assessment for Spanish-speaking students,
Harcourt Assessment offers Aprenda™: La prueba de logros en español, Tercera edición (Aprenda™ 3).
Modeled after its companion product, the Stanford Achievement Test Series, Tenth Edition (Stanford 10),
Aprenda 3 provides the valid and reliable results you expect from our assessments.
In some cases, students’ limited English skills prevent them from being included in programs that are
appropriate for their ability and would enhance their learning. The Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT)
is a tool that can reliably provide information about the ability of non-English speaking students independent
of their language or of the educational curricula. It is a valuable instrument to identify students with potential
learning challenges as well as students who may benefit from gifted and talented programs.
These solutions, in conjunction with our other offerings, provide the tools you need to measure, guide
instruction and document progress to enable ELL students to transition to and succeed in mainstream
classrooms.
Best wishes for a successful 2007.
Sincerely,
Michael Hansen

Flexible Levels for Fall and Spring Testing—Focused on CurriculumAt the elementary, middle, and junior high school levels, the concepts and skills assessed are those ordinarily taught during the second half of any given year and the first half of the following year. This midyear-to-midyear configuration provides for a more focused assessment of students tested in thespring of one grade and the fall of the next than could a single test level intended for use in both the fall and spring of the same school year. It also provides more opportunity to monitor academic growth whenAprenda 3 is administered in the spring and then in the fall of the next year.
At the high school levels, where the Avanzado 1 and 2 levels assess basic skills, a single level is appropriatefor use in both spring of the same school year and then in the fall of the next year.
Our assessments help students realize
their potential

Ortografía/Spelling
The Aprenda 3 Spelling subtest, offered at the Primario 1 through Avanzado levels, assesses objectivesbased upon the phonetic and structural principles taught at each of the grade levels. At these levels, sightwords are replaced by homophones.
The format for the Primario 1 Spelling subtest is dictated: students listen to a word and a sentence containing the word. At the Primario 2 through Avanzado 2 levels, the spelling words are presented in context. Each spelling item consists of one sentence with three underlined words. Beginning at Primario 3, a “No Hay Error” (“No Mistake”) option is offered. The misspellings used reflect students’most common spelling errors.
Presenting spelling words in context provides students with a more realistic task than when thewords are presented in isolation.
Sample is representative of Aprenda 3 Intermedio 3 Level materials.
In the Spelling subtest, students are asked to decide if one of the underlined words in a sentenceis misspelled or if there is no mistake.

Ciencias Sociales/Social Science
Helping to build civic competence among our nation’s students is the underlying purpose of the Aprenda 3Social Science subtest. At all levels, the subtest represents contemporary thinking in the content areas ofhistory, geography, civics and government, and economics.
The history questions focus on the history of the United States, the history of Western Civilization, and thehistory of non-Western peoples and societies sharing our interdependent world. The National Standardsfor History served as a guideline.
Geography questions, based on the Geography for Life: National Geography Standards, reflect thegrowing importance of both physical and human geography in today’s schools.
The political science component assesses the basic understanding of the U.S. system of government as outlined in the National Standards for Civics and Government.
The Voluntary National Content Standards in Economics provides the foundation for Aprenda 3economics questions, assessing both macroeconomic and microeconomic concepts.
• Gives equal attention to history, geography, political science, and economics
• Includes cultural elements across the entire subtest and reflects a balance between nationaland international issues
• Aligns with the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Curriculum Standardsfor Social Studies, and state standards

The Reading subtest measures word understanding and comprehension of different varieties of text.Questions mirror the developmental nature of good reading instruction and the kinds of materials used inexemplary programs. At each level, item types progress in difficulty. At the Primary-High School levels, items present from sight word recognition and sentence comprehension then vocabulary acquisition and comprehension of written discourse. At the Readiness-Preliteracy levels, items are developmentallyappropriate and ordered according to increasing difficulty.
The Reading test aligns with the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and assesses reading with three types of text:
• Literary — Material read for enjoyment• Informational — Expository material read for information• Functional — Materials encountered in everyday life designed to help the reader perform a task
Questions measure two modes of comprehension as well as vocabulary/idioms in context:
• Initial Understanding — Understand directly stated details or relationships• Interpretation — Extend meaning and infer relationships among ideas• Vocabulary/Idioms in Context — Predict meanings of unknown words or idioms

Listening
The Listening subtest measures student comprehension of conversational English or Spanish and understanding sentence level and longer discourse. The teacher reads the script or plays an audiocassettethat gives a standardized presentation of directions and stimuli (Primary-High School levels).
Listening Task
• Responding to authentic task-based questions—Students read a scenario and look at a graphic that depicts the context, then they listen to a short speech and a question and choose the correct response.
• Listening for specific information — Studentslisten to a short speech and/or a question andchoose a picture or printed option that answersthe question.
Writing Conventions
The Writing Conventions subtest at the Primary-High Schoollevels measures students’ achievement in applying the principlesthat form effective writing:
• Recognition of English (or Spanish) language grammatical structure
• Recognition of correctly spelled words
• Recognition of conventions, punctuation, and capitalization
These concepts are measured in age-appropriate ways for the youngest ELLs.
Writing
The direct Writing subtest provides authentic information about students’ productive skills in English (or Spanish). At the Readiness-Preliteracy levels, this subtest elicits developmentally appropriate writingperformance. At the upper levels, it requires a written response to a picture prompt. This subtest measuresobjectives that cannot be assessed with multiple-choice questions, such as appropriate and precise wordchoice, varied sentence structure, organization of sentences, and degree of fluency or correct letter and wordformation at the youngest levels.
Writing can be an optional subtest to facilitate quick results for placement of students.

Document Progress with Meaningful InformationBecause a wide variety of language groups and levels ofproficiencies describe English language learners, the most meaningful information compares performance to benchmarks of proficiency. Stanford ELP and Stanford SLP provide five performance levels based on a total score and each content area assessed: Pre-Emergent, Emergent, Basic,Intermediate, and Proficient.
Score reports, available when utilizing Harcourt Scoring &Reporting Services, also group scores into Communication Skillsto provide more instructionally related information:
• Productive (Speaking and Writing)• Social (Listening and Speaking)• Academic (Reading, Writing, and Writing Conventions)
Confirm Scoring of Speaking and Writing SubtestsTeachers will be confident scoring the speaking and direct writingsubtests of Stanford ELP and Stanford SLP after reviewing theSpeaking/Writing Training Manual. This manual provides adescription of the rubrics to holistically score the writing prompts, information about the characteristics of the writing of English language learners, and a section of sample papers for all levels of the test, representing all score points. For the Speaking subtest, the manual describes the rubrics for each section. A DVD withsample student responses helps teachers practice scoring theSpeaking subtest. Manuals are available for the Readiness-Preliteracy levels, and for the Primary-High School levels.
NOTE:This Student Report is also available in Spanish.
