The Auxiliary funds programs andservices that enrich the lives of the residents at the Centre andthe community at-large. It's hard to believe that anotheryear has passed! Time just flies bywhen you are so busy having so

much fun! The Auxiliary has onceagain reported a record year infundraising, and we were able to ful-fill all the requests and wish list

items given to us by the Centre.

Our residents are happily taking advantage of ourweekly shuttle bus service to the Cavendish Mall, ourSunshine Fund provides companions and fulfillsspecial requests for those who need them, Meals onWheels continues to provide lunches for needyrecipients in the community, and Boutique Evie isservicing our residents with specialized clothing. OurGift Shop is busy receiving new merchandise daily,and the Coffee Shop is always busy serving deliciousmeals and snacks to staff, volunteers and visitors.

The Satellite Group created beautiful original matzahcovers for Passover, and they sold so well, that theyare once again on order for next year.

Our Annual Bridge Tournament and Luncheonboasted a record attendance of over 360participants!!! Lunch was fantastic, and prizes wereplentiful.

Our Raffle was held on June 26, 2007 and the luckywinners have all picked up their prizes, whichincluded artwork by Sydney Berne, and MargaretNachshen, a bicycle from Dorel, cash prizes, andjewellery to name a few!

We were proud to honour our Past President, HindaAdelstein, at a showing of the play "Those Were theDays" at the Saidye Bronfman Centre onJune 27, 2007. A beautiful tribute reception was heldafter the play, and a great time was had by all!

We are proud to announce that our wonderful, newLife Membership Boards are now on display, oppositethe main elevators, and we invite you to come andtake a look at them.

Special thanks to our very capable office staff, PhyllisSohmer and Paula Nutik, Executive Secretary, whokeep things running smoothly, and to Arlene Lernerwho not only coordinates the Meals on WheelsProgram, but fills in at the office whenever necessary.

Annual Outing

On a warm and muchanticipated summermorning, Thursday

August 16, 2007 fifty-fiveof our Board Members andfriends met for a lightbreakfast at MaimonidesGeriatric centre in antici-pation of a fun day’s out-ing to Knowlton.

We boarded our bus andsang our way to the firstdestination, the quaintshops in the downtown areaof the village, which gaveeveryone time to stretchtheir legs and spendsome money.

We then continued to “LeRelais” restaurant for adelicious lunch. Withrenewed energy, weheaded to the highlightof the afternoon, LacBrome Theatre, to seeGeorge Bernard Shaw’s last play,the comedy “Buoyant Billions”.

4:15 p.m. saw us back on our bus,a little more weary then at thebeginning of the day, somewhatunwilling to sing, but definitelywilling to laugh, talk and munchon the scrumptious cranberry-nut cookies from our very ownCoffee Shop. The perfect ending to a wonderful day.

My sincere thanks to Paula and Phyllis in the Auxiliary officefor their help in the plans, and to the staff of the Coffee Shopand Maimonides Nutrition and Food Services Department,whose cooperation made our mini-breakfast and cookies agreat success.Anne NathansonCoordinator, Outings

Meals on WheelsAnother year has come and gone. That means we ordered, packed and delivered approximately 10,000 meals overthe past year. Quite a feat for our team of incredibly dedicated and committed volunteers.

We at Meals on Wheels are proud to say regardless of any situation i.e.; holidays and inclement weather, we havenever missed a day of delivery. We are also fortunate enough to have had a few new volunteers join, it has been apleasure, but as always we still need more volunteers.

Performa Round Group Therapy Tabledonated by the Rose Goldberg Memorial Fund

On behalf of the Maimonides Geriatric Centre DayHospital Team, I would like to thank the Auxiliaryfor their generous donation of the Performa Round

Group Therapy Table.

This adjustable table allows us to meet the needs ofclients who require a lower table in the gym area in orderto eat and perform therapeutic activities withoutdiscomfort.

What an absolutely appropri-ate well thought out namefor a fund that brings

warmth and sunshine into the livesof many seniors living in theMaimonides Accredited Homes andIntermediate Resources! Many ofour more vulnerable seniors havebeen able to enjoy a quality of livingdue to the generosity of theSunshine Fund. This fund hasenabled several of the residents toattend some excellent day centresin the community - Jewish EldercareDay Centre, Shaare HashamayimDay Centre, Cummings Centre forSeniors, Action Centre in NDG. Forsome the Sunshine Fund has pro-vided funds to pay for the day pro-grams, for others the fund hasenabled seniors to go with a com-panion to assist them during thetravel and day long activities. Anexcellent example is that of a gen-tleman who suffers withParkinson's. Since his entry into oneof the Accredited Homes severalyears ago, this man has wanted toattend the Wellness Centre ofCummings Centre for Seniors. Dueto his frail and unpredictable condi-

Thank You Sunshine Fundtion he was only able to attend thisweekly outing under the supervisionof a companion.This gentlemanwho is on limitedincome wouldnever have hadthe funds toaccomplish this.Because of thisfund he looks for-ward to a weeklyouting where he benefits from newfriendships, education, fun, while atthe same time enhancing his selfesteem. There are several otherpeople with similar stories, eachhaving a positive ending.

One could easily take for grantedwhat having a monthly bus passcould mean. For our younger moreable seniors it can make thedifference between maintainingtheir independence in thecommunity, opening up doors tonew opportunities and maintaininga normal lifestyle.

The following is an excellentexample of how a bus pass hasallowed one of our residents in the

Intermediate Resource to maintainher significant family relationships.

This particularresident prior toliving in thei n t e r m e d i a t eresource had livedall her life with hersister and mom.Her mom hadrecently moved toa nursing home,

and her only sister still lives at homein the community. This resident hadbeen used to seeing her mom andsister on a daily basis. How wouldshe be able to maintain theseimportant connections in her lifeand continue to promote the familyrelationship?

The bus pass that she received fromthe Sunshine Fund is her key to herfamily. She goes to visit her momand sister on a daily basis, while stillliving in the secure supervisedsetting that she requires.

Bridge Luncheon andTournament

Maimonides Geriatric Centre Auxiliary,held its 21st Annual Bridge Luncheonand Tournament on May 14, 2007 at

Beth Israel Beth Aaron Congregation onMackle Road in Côte St. Luc.

Over 360 players participated in the Bridgeand Mah Jongg games. Fabulous door prizeswere given out and lucky Raffle winnersreceived fantastic gifts. A delicious lunch wasserved and great time was had by all.

Auxiliary Honours Hinda Deckelbaum Adelstein

On June 27, 2007, the Auxiliary was proud to honour Past President Hinda Deckelbaum Adelstein at the Leanorand Alvin Segal Theatre’s presentation of the Yiddish play “Those Were the Days”. Hinda holds the record forbeing Auxiliary President and Co-President for five years, (2001 -2006).

A capacity crowd enjoyed champagne cocktails, afabulous show, and afterward, a private receptionwas held in the YM-YWHA’s Hall of Honour. Guestswere treated to a wonderful display of fancydesserts and coffee. Tributes to Hinda were given byAuxiliary President Terri Klein, Centre BoardPresident Len Lewkowict, Foundation Past PresidentLarry Nachshen, and best friend of the honoree,Vivian Billick. We thank Hinda for her dedication anddevotion to Maimonides and its residents.

volunteers who may have recentlyretired from professional careers, orwho find themselves with an emptynest and wish to share their expert-ise and life experience in a mean-ingful way.

Weekly lectures and workshopsprovided by professionals workingwithin the field of gerontology and

Paraprofessional Volunteer Programapproximately 4 - 6 hours weekly forthree 8-week sessions over a 2 yearperiod. Schedules are flexible andpersonalized to meet the needs ofthe individual volunteer. At thecompletion of the program,volunteers are presented with acertificate of participation.
