HOME OF THE PIRATES

Park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City Area home, offering students the features of both small-town life and the flashing lights of the big city.

With a popu-lation of just more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit com-munity often times associated with small college athletics and the NAIA. Originally a trad-ing post on the Mis-souri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which includ-ed the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area.Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east of Park University’s Parkville Campus gives Park University stu-dents two great entertainment opportunities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland of the Greater

Kansas City Metropolitan Area, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The Northland is locally referred to as “north of the river”. Con-tained wholly within Missouri, it encompasses portions of Clay Coun-ty including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Liberty, North Kansas City and Gladstone. As a whole, the Kansas City Metropolitan Area is situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the state border between Missouri and Kansas. The Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 27th largest in the United States, with an estimated popula-tion just shy of 2 million.

Kansas City is home to the Kansas City T-Bones minor league base-ball franchise, the Kansas City Brigade of the Arena Football League,

and the Kansas City Explorers of World Team Tennis. Kansas City is also home to the Sprint Center and

Kansas City Power & Light District, which opened last fall and has quickly turned into one of the region’s top entertainment districts.

The Sprint Center also houses the College Basketball Experience, which includes

the College Basketball Hall of Fame. Blocks from the Power & Light District

and the Sprint Center sits Municipal Auditorium,

home to the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I

Men’s Basketball To u r n a m e n t .

Additionally, the National Association of Intercol-legiate Ath-

letics moved its offices downtown in the sum-mer of 2007.

In the 2006-07 season,

Park advanced to the tournament’s sweet 16, marking the deepest run in more than a decade by a Kansas City-area team. Kansas City is also known for its historic shopping districts, in-cluding Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza”, the Country Club Plaza is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between the Thanksgiving Holiday and midway through January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shopping district, while Town Center and The Legends at Village West in Kansas keep shoppers occupied in the Sunflower State.

Through English’s tenure as athletics director, Park athletics has undergone vast improvements, including the addition of women’s golf and baseball as intercollegiate sports. Additionally, English has overseen numerous facility im-provements, including the 1,500-seat Julian Field, home to Park University men’s and women’s soccer, as well as Breckon Sports Center, which houses Park’s men’s and women’s bas-ketball, men’s and women’s volleyball and administrative of-fices. BRECKON SPORTS CENTER

The 1,200-seat Breckon Sports Center enters its ninth season for the Park University basketball and volleyball

teams, providing a home court for both men’s and women’s squads since the fall of 2000. Breckon Sports Center, named after for-mer Park University president Dr. Donald J. Breckon, houses an additional auxiliary gym, in addition to office space for administrative staff, men’s and women’s basketball coaches and both volleyball coaches at Park. A two-dome facility, the West Dome houses the spectator court, while the East Dome is the home of the auxiliary court and indoor practice facility, which is also used by the Pirates’ baseball and softball squads, as well as men’s and women’s soccer and the Park spirit squad. When not in use by the Department of Athletics, the Breckon Sports Center is also home to many on-campus events for Park University, including convocations and as-semblies in the West Dome, with celebrations, banquets and other university functions tak-ing place on the facility’s east side. Since its inaugural season in 2000, Breck-on has provided the Pirates with one of the area’s top home-court advantages, with the men’s basketball team posting a 73-37 mark on its home court, while women’s basketball is 57-37 at home since moving into Breckon in 2000-01. Breckon Sports Center has helped pro-duce two NAIA basketball tournament teams – one on the men’s side and one for the wom-en – while the men’s volleyball has posted two National Invitational Tournament titles since moving into Breckon Sports Center, winning in 2003 and 2008. Since occupying the Sports Center in 2001, the men’s volleyball squad has produced a 184-50 overall mark (including away matches), and heading into the 2009 season, the Pirate men’s volleyball squad has won its last 29 matches at home, in-cluding five in the 2008 NAIA National Invitational. On the women’s side of the net, Park is 143-142 since calling Breckon home (also including road matches), and during the 2007 season, the Pirates posted a 6-2 mark on their home court. In the two years heading into the 2008-09 season, Park has also seen a pair of record crowds file in to the Sports Center, as a capacity 1,200 fans witnessed then No. 14 Park take down No. 1 MidAmeri-

ca Nazarene 78-75 on January 16, 2007, in Parkville. Breckon Sports Center’s second-best crowd – 1,033 – came during the NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Invitational Tournament Championship, when No. 1 Park beat No. 2 California Baptist 3-1 to earn the title. Park also topped the 900-fan mark two more times in the 2007-08 school year, once in men’s basketball against Philander Smith and again in the men’s volleyball regular sea-son against Cal Baptist. Park’s top women’s basketball crowd dur-ing the 2007-08 season came against Brescia when 717 were in attendance, while women’s volleyball drew more than 200 fans to the sea-son opener of the 2007 season against Kansas Wesleyan.

2008-09 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

PARK

With an incoming freshman class of 10 and only five return-ing players, the 2008-09 Park University women’s basket-ball team will depend on many new faces to bring success

to this year’s squad. After a 15-15 2007-08 season and a second place finish in the NAIA Independent Region Women’s Championship. Head coach Joe C. Meriweather has his hopes set high for his team full of new players. “This year with ten new freshmen it’s going to be challenging,” Meriweather said. “We are asking our newcomers to learn the system quickly, but my expec-tations are very high for them. They are athletic and in practice they have worked very hard.” The youth movement may test this year’s squad but the five players returning for the Pirates this year have loads of experi-ence to carry the team on its back. The Pirates return senior forward Meghan Cummings who last season appeared and started in all 30 games for the Pirates. Cummings led the team in minutes played with 986 and av-eraged 10.1 points per game along with 7.9 boards a game. The St. Joseph, Mo. product led all Pirates in rebounds with 237 on the season and also provided the Pi-rates with some range on the floor, shooting 33.0 percent from behind the arc. Park also returns sophomore Brianne Ed-wards to the squad. Ed-wards appeared in 19 games and started in 11 of those for the Pirates. The 5-10 forward averaged 9.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in 2007 and was the fourth leading scorer for Park last season. The Pirates will also get back senior Chante Dean this season. Dean missed all of the 2007 campaign due to in-jury. As a sophomore in 2006, Dean ap-peared in nine games and started in six averaging 7.9 points per game. The 5-10 forward from Kansas City, Mo. will look to play

a key role for Park down low this season. Sophomore Stefany Jones also returns for the Pirates this year, the 5-5 guard saw action in nine games for Park during the 2007-08 season. Jones played 74 minutes, averaging 8.2 minutes per game

and will fight for the starting point guard position on this year’s squad.

Along with Jones, junior Traci Oden returns for Park in 2008-09. Oden appeared in 14 games for the Pirates as a sophomore. The Richmond, Mo. native scored a season high 14 points against Allen University last season and

logged 105 minutes on the floor, averaging 7.5 minutes per game.

“Both Oden and Jones didn’t get a lot of playing time last year, but from what I can see right now they have both really

matured and I expect a lot from both of them this year,” Meri-weather said.

Along with the 10 freshman joining Park this sea-son, two transfer players are looking to step in and vie

for some playing time including, Katelyn Wilson, a 6-1 forward out of Alamogordo, N.M. Wilson comes to Park after one season at Cochise College, the sophomore looks to join Dean and Edwards as for-wards.

Brittney English, who transfers to Park from Ft. Scott Community College, will also look to join

Wilson down low as a post player. English is a 6-1 forward out of Kansas City, Mo.

A familiar face will also join the Pirates on the court this season, Shareikka Theus-Downey, who is currently the starting outside hitter of the women’s volleyball team will join Park’s women’s

basketball team after the conclusion of the volleyball season. Theus-Downey

will put away the knee pads for the winter and hit the hard wood for the Pirates as a for-

ward.

Tournament and a 15-15 record. Head coach Joe C. Meriweather has put together a schedule with NAIA nationally ranked Division I and Division II teams to prepare Park for Independent Region play and a shot at post season action. The Pirates open their season on Nov. 1 in Parkville, Mo., hosting McKendree College at 2:00 p.m. Park University will take on McKen-dree, who was receiving votes in the final 2007-08 NAIA Division I top-25, inside Breckon Sports to tip off the 2008-09 season. those will be against teams that ended their 2007-08 seasons in

joe C. Meriweather enters his 12th season as the head coach of the women’s basketball program at Park University.

Last season, Park finished 15-15 on the year. Meri-weather lead his 2007-08 squad to a 4-1 independent re-cord and a second place finish in the NAIA Independent Region Women’s Championship. Meriweather also helped guide Ashley Birch to a 2008 NAIA All-American Honorable Mention selec-tion. In 2005, Meriweather guided the Pirates to a 19-12 overall record as Park qualified for the NAIA Divi-sion I National Tournament for the first time in school history. For his efforts, he was named the 2005-06 NAIA Division I Independent Re-gion Coach of the Year. In his eleven-year career at Park, the 1998 AMC Coach of the Year has posted a 118-199 record, but over the last seven seasons his teams have won 93 games, including a school record 22 wins (3 losses) in 2003-04. His 118 career wins at Park represent half of the program’s all-time wins, making Meriweath-er Park’s all-time winningest head women’s basketball coach. Before taking the helm of the Pirate program, Meriweather en-joyed a long professional career in the NBA and overseas. Drafted in the first round by the Houston Rockets in 1975, he also played for the Atlanta Hawks,

PIRATES REBOUND IN OPENING GAMES Despite a season-opening loss to Columbia College by six points on the road, Park University opened the season with a 3-2 record in its first five games of the year, including back-to-back wins after the 71-65 loss to Columbia. The Pirates turned around to beat McKendree 70-61 in Lebanon, Ill., and in its home opener, Park dispatched 2006-07 NAIA tournament qualifier MidAmerica Nazarene 69-60 at Breckon Sports Center. Attention then turned to the traveling classic that rotates between Baker, Benedictine, Ot-tawa and Park, where the Pirates took on Baker and Benedictine in Ottawa, Kan. Park suffered its second de-feat of the season to open the classic, falling by two to Bene-dictine before rebounding to beat Baker, 57-52. RIVAL LOSS STARTS 5-GAME SKID Park suffered its worst defeat of the season on Nov. 13 at the hands of William Jewell, falling 68-31, beginning a five-game losing streak against possi-bly the most fierce part of the season’s schedule. Park then traveled to Oklahoma Baptist for a two-game classic, opening the tournament with an 87-57 loss to OBU, followed by a 74-65 loss to Oklahoma Christian. The losing streak continued through loss-es at Southern Nazarene and Missouri Western, but on Nov. 27, the Pirates put the streak to bed with a 74-70 win over Missouri Baptist.

PARK SPLITS TOUGH DECEMBER Park University opened the month of December in a big way, beating Hannibal-LaGrange 62-43 before a pair of tough-luck losses, falling by nine on the road at nationally ranked Southern Nazarene before an 11-point home loss to another nationally ranked opponent, Oklahoma Baptist. Dec. 17 may have provided the most exciting finish of the 2007-08 season, as the Pirates beat Columbia by a point on a last-second

three by Katrena Richard. Richard put the ball up with 1.7 seconds on the clock and

splashed it, as Park trailed 68-66 prior to its final trip down the floor. That win sent Park to the break with a 6-9 record.

JANUARY BRINGS BIG HOMESTAND Out of the holiday break, the Pirates opened a five-game homestand with a 57-42 win over Ottawa on Jan. 3, starting a string of five games that saw the Pirates post a 4-1 record. Park did lose once, by nine to McKendree on Jan. 5, but the Pirates rebounded for three-straight big wins, beginning with a 68-42 win on Jan. 7 over Judson. The winning streak continued on Jan. 11 with a 67-51 win over Peru State, and on Jan. 19, the Pirates beat Inde-pendent Region rival Brescia by 10, 66-56. Park closed the month with back-to-back losses, post-ing a 4-3 record in the first month of 2008.

PIRATES SCORE 109 ON ALLEN After opening February with a loss on the road to NAIA Division II’s No. 2 team in College of the Ozarks, the Pirates put on their best offensive performance of the season, beating Allen University 109-45 in the Brescia Independent Classic at Owensboro, Ky. Park then beat Voorhees by five before another blow-out victory on the road, as Ashley Birch estab-lished her season-high for points with 31 in an 89-68 victory over Missouri Baptist. The Pirates split their

final two games in February, falling to Brescia before beating Philander Smith.

POSTSEASON HONORS One win stood between Park University and the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Tourna-ment. The Pirates beat Voorhees 70-44 in the Independent Region semifinal, but after lead-ing at the half in the championship game, Park fell by four to Brescia, 66-62, ending the season with a .500 record, 15-15. Birch was named to the All-Independent team, while Brianne Ed-wards was named to the All-Independent Tour-nament team for her 21-point effort in the title game. Birch was also awarded postseason honors by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, earning Honorable Mention All-America after leading the team in scoring at 16.1 points per game. Park University had two additional double-digit scorers on the season, as Cherrale Ricks averaged 10.0 points per game, while junior Meghan Cummings was second on the team in scoring with 10.1 points per contest. Cummings was also the team’s top rebounder, grabbing 7.9 rebounds per game, while Ricks averaged 7.6.

2008-09 SEASON

Facing one of the toughest schedules in NAIA men’s basketball, Park University will look to experience to take the lead in the 2008-09 season, and with a roster that includes eight seniors

and four juniors plus one sophomore who saw time in 2007-08, the Pirates have a solid pool of candidates to lead this season. At the front of the Pirates’ eight-senior list is Sporting News Pre-season First-Team All-American Jon Meriweather, who averaged 20.3 points per game, earning NAIA second-team honors last year as well as third-team accolades by Victory Sports Network and Basketball Times. “We’ve got Michael Zimmerman coming back who is a two-year starter and obviously Jon will be a huge factor for us with the numbers he put up last year,” head coach Jason Kline said. “We are looking for both of them to take a large leadership role this season and help those younger guys learn the system and implement what we are trying to preach, which is defend and rebound.” Meriweather will be the catalyst to the Pirates maintaining last season’s rebounding edge over opponents, as his 9.9 rebounding av-erage was one of the deciding factors in the Pirates outrebounding opponents by nearly 100 rebounds. The Park offense will rely on Zimmerman to continue running the point in the same fashion as the 2007-08 season, when he finished with 121 assists, finishing in the NAIA’s Top 25 for assists per game at more than four through 29 contests. Zimmerman also averaged 8.7 points per game, while Marcus Seidel, who led the team in 3-point baskets, averaged 9.7. Meriweather was the only Pirate to average bet-ter than 20 points per game a year ago, and toward the end of the 2007-08 campaign, Deron Cherry II came on as a scoring threat for the Pirates, ending the season averaging 11.9 points per game. Cherry and Meriweather are the only two return-ing double-digit scorers to the 2008-09 roster, but the team will have to replace a pair of starters in Arturo Donzella and Donovan Williams, as well as Ben Wal-lis and Michael Koch who were lost to gradua-tion last season. “Arturo and Donovan are two guys that have left holes we’ve got to fill this year, but we have a lot of perimeter guys on this year’s squad that could step in. There will be a lot of competition for those perim-eter spots, now we just have to see who will step up and take advantage of that opportunity,” Kline said. “I thought Ben Wallis was also key for us last year. He real-ly knew his role on the floor and defended well for us, and Michael Koch also gave us some leadership off of the bench.” In addition to the three starters and primary scorers from last season’s squad, the Pirates will also look to get minutes in the paint from returning se-nior forwards Justin Hopper and Milan Sus-njar, while senior guards Nathan Duncan and Chris Jones will help add depth to the Park backcourt. “It all boils down to how we defend and rebound this season, that’s what we

tell the guys everyday in practice,” Kline said. “Defending well and crashing the boards will carry us even if we have a bad day offensive-ly.” Another player who joined the program midway through the 2007-08 season but did not play for the Pirates could fight for minutes and a starting spot early on, as Herschel Rodgers joins the 2008-09 roster after transferring from Lansing Community College. Nine newcomers help to fill out the 2008-09 squad, including Ball State sophomore transfer Phillip Garnett, and junior Clyde McKinney, who has played at both Ferris State and Indiana Tech during his col-legiate career. The Pirates also have four freshmen on the roster, while sophomores Eduardo Quintero and Patrick James will also compete for minutes in the post as newcomers this season. Park’s fierce schedule includes nine games against ranked NAIA opponents, six who made NAIA tournament appearances and six more contests against NCAA Division II teams. “Being an Independent team we have to be ready to play night in and night out from day one,” Kline said. “We will be going up against some of the best teams in the nation under this schedule, but we have a smart group of players that I think will come together as a unit and showcase their talents.”

THE OPPOSITION

Nine games against ranked NAIA opponents, six who made NAIA tournament appearances and six more against NCAA Division II squads have combined to again

make Park University’s men’s basketball schedule one of the NA-IA’s most challenging for the 2008-09 season. The Pirates will play 11 games inside Breckon Sports Center, in-cluding two against NCAA opponents and six against NAIA tour-nament teams.

The season gets an unofficial start on Oct. 18 in Parkville, when the Pirates play their only exhibition contest of the season, tak-

ing on Livin’ The Dream at 3 p.m. Livin’ The Dream is an exhibition team filled with former NAIA and NCAA student-athletes. LTD plays throughout the Kansas City area in the months of October and November.

Regular-season play begins Nov. 1 in the Sooner State, when Park travels to Oklahoma Christian for

a 3 p.m. start in Edmond, Okla., marking the sec-ond-straight year that the Pirates and Eagles

have locked up to open the season.

The home opener comes three days later when Benedictine visits Breckon at 7

p.m., followed by a pair of neutral-floor

games in Peru, Neb., Nov. 7-8 against Briar Cliff

and Doane. Briar Cliff finished the 2007-08 season receiving votes in the NAIA Division II Top 25.

A pair of annual rivalries renew to begin November’s second week in Kansas City, as

McKendree visits Park on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. McKendree finished last season ranked

No. 10 in the NAIA before earning a bid to the NAIA tournament at Municipal

Auditorium. Nov. 13 sends Park to Townsend

Michael Zimmerman finished the 2007-08 season with 121 assists, landing in the NAIA’s top 25 for as-sists per game at 4.3. He returns for his senior season as the Pirates starting point guard.

2008-09 PIRATES

Antowin Edwards enters his seventh season as an assistant coach for the men’s basket-

ball program at Park University. Edwards began his stint with the Pirates under current Athletics Director Claude English

A four-year letterwinner for the Pirates from 1992-96, Edwards works in the Grand View School District as a peer mediator and as an assistant coach for the boy’s basketball team. A native of Austin, Texas, Edwards earned his bachelor’s degree from Park in 1997.

gordon Stubblefield is in his fourth season as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Park

University after also playing a season for head coach Jason Kline at Indiana Tech. Stubblefield played one season under current

nized student-athletes with academic honors. The 2006-07 season marked one of the greatest single-season turnarounds in NAIA Men’s Basketball history, as the Pirates went from a 10-22 record in 2005-06 to an .813 winning percentage during the NAIA tournament run. In addition to the turnaround and tournament appearance, Park also recorded its first win over an NCAA Division I school under Kline’s watch – a 103-99 exhibition triumph over UMKC in November. Kline came to Park after seven successful seasons at Indiana Tech University in Fort Wayne, Ind., where he led the Warriors to a 140-84 record during his tenure. In 2004-05, he guided Indiana Tech to a school record 29 wins (eight losses) and the school’s second straight NAIA Division II National Tournament ap-pearance, advancing to the Elite Eight. Over his last three seasons at Indiana Tech, Kline’s teams averaged over 26 wins per year. In each of the last four seasons, his teams finished the regular season in the top 35 of the final NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball ratings, including a ranking of eighth in 2003-04 and 15th in 2004-05. Academically, Kline’s players had

a graduation rate of 91.4 percent at ITU. Kline, who was named the WHAC (Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference) Coach of the Year in 2003-04, led Indiana Tech to a regu-lar season conference title in 2003-04 and to the WHAC Tournament Championship in 2004-05. Individually, Kline’s players have accumulated a multitude of honors. Fifteen student-athletes have been named NAIA All-America Scholar Athletes under Kline, while 12 have earned athletic All-Ameri-ca honors. Forty-four players have been tabbed Academic All-Confer-

ence honorees, along with 23 All-Confer-ence performers. Kline, who has an overall coach-ing record of 192-125 over 10 seasons, started his coaching career as an assis-tant at Indiana Tech from 1993-95, where he earned his undergraduate degree in business administration in 1994. Kline then spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Kansas Wesleyan Uni-versity, in Salina, Kan., which is where he completed his M.B.A. in 1998. He and his wife, Jolina, a former women’s basket-ball student-athlete at Kansas Wesleyan, have two sons, Jacob and Jackson.

SOLID OPENING WEEKEND BEGINS 2007-08 The Pirates got off to a hot start in 2007-08, turning the first week-end in November into a 2-0 record with wins over Central Methodist and Oklahoma Christian. Junior transfer Marcus Seidel led the team in scoring during both games on opening weekend, burning the net for 22 against CMU and getting 16 against Oklahoma Christian. The Pirates sputtered a bit over the next three games, falling to Benedictine twice, first on the road and again in the William Jewell Classic. The Pirates also fell to Jewell in Liberty, by three in overtime.

COMEBACK SPARKS BIG END TO NOVEMBER Park came into the Nov. 13 contest with nationally ranked McK-endree reeling, having lost its last three games with a 2-3 record through five games. The Bearcats took a 13-point lead to the halftime locker room, but behind a career-high 19 points from senior Michael Koch, the Pirates completed the comeback, beating McKendree 75-71, sparking a 5-2 finish in the team’s last seven games dur-ing the month. Park atoned for an earlier loss to Jewell with a five-point overtime victory, and after losses to John Brown and Southern Nazarene, Park won three straight, beating Midland Lutheran, Saint Mary and Missouri Baptist to close out the month. The Pirates played two games in December, falling to Columbia and Bellevue.

NEW YEAR, NEW STREAK The 2008 New Year’s holiday brought on a three-game winning streak for the Pirates, posting wins over Missouri Bap-tist, Columbia and Judson to open the season’s second half. All-American forward Jon Meri-weather also began to break out in those three games, leading the team in scoring in all three contests by scoring 25, 26 and 25 points. He also had double-doubles in two of the first three games after the holi-day break. Park followed the three-game streak with a pair of hard-luck losses to nationally ranked Bellevue and College of the Ozarks, but on Jan. 16, Park rebounded with a statement win, beating Rockhurst 76-73 behind 33 points from Meriweather and another 19 from Deron Cherry II. Meriweather earned his first of two NAIA National Player of the Week honors after the

Rockhurst game. The Pirates closed out the month of January with a win and a loss, beating Brescia in Parkville and falling at Philander Smith.

MERIWEATHER CONTINUES BREAK-OUT Jon Meriweather’s big second half of the season wasn’t limited to January games, beginning the month of February with 20 points in a loss to Ozarks on Feb. 5, followed by 20 more in a Feb. 8 win over Allen, a game in which he produced another one of his 12 double-doubles, grabbing 13 rebounds. His true break-out performance came the next day, as the junior from Kansas City, Mo., went for 38 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in

a two-point loss to Voorhees. Meriweather would earn his second NAIA Player of the Week honor later in the month, becoming the first player since the

2004-05 season to earn the honor twice in a season in NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball. On Feb. 23, Meriweather had his third 30-point outing of the

season, scoring 30 points at Brescia, leading the Pirates to a 102-77 victory. Cherry got in on the 30-point scoring bar-

rage in the next game, leading the team with 31 points and nine rebounds on senior day in a 90-64 win over

Philander Smith. Park University ended its 2007-08 campaign with a 16-13 record, splitting in the NAIA Independent Region tournament with an opening-round win over Allen, followed by a double-overtime loss to Voorhees to end the year.

POST-SEASON HONORS Jon Meriweather capped one of the best individual performance seasons in Pirate his-tory with three All-America distinctions, earn-ing Second-Team All-America Honors from the

NAIA Coaches and third-team recognition from Basketball Times and Victory Sports Network.

Meriweather finished in the NAIA Top 10 for scoring (20.3 points per game), rebounding (9.9 rebounds per game) and blocked shots (55). He also knocked down 135-of-169 from the free throw line and finished with a team-high 207 made baskets in 348 attempts, also a team-

best. During the Independent tournament, Meri-

weather, Cherry and Michael Zimmerman were named to the All-Independent squad, while Koch, Cherry and Zimmerman were also joined on the All-Academic Independent team by Ben Wallis,

Admir Aljic, Donovan Williams and Milan Susnjar.
