Must install a separate player to play QuickTime, RealMedia, or Windows Media videos in a Director movie

Must install at least Mac OS 10.3 and DVD Asset Xtra (Mac) or DirectX 8.1 and a DirectShow-compliant DVD player, such as WinDVD

Playing Media in a Movie


Import Media

Can import a variety of sound formats:– AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format)– WAV (compressed or uncompressed)– Shockwave Audio– AU (Sun audio)– MP3


Importing Audio and Video Media into a Movie

Can import sounds as internal or external cast members

Internal is good for short sounds

External is good for long sounds

Director streams externally linked sounds to reduce delay



Can import other video formats, but you must install an Xtra to run the video

Changes made to video in or outside of Director will be automatically updated in corresponding video

Streaming Shockwave Audio

Shockwave Audio compresses and streams sound files to provide fast playback of high-quality audio

Can use Shockwave Audio to compress the size of sounds by ratio as high as 176 to 1



Director compresses and streams Shockwave Audio and MP3 sound files to reduce delay in playback

Director loads and plays beginning of sound as the rest of the sound continues to load



Must create a Shockwave Audio or MP3 sound file before you can stream a Shockwave Audio cast member

To convert, you set the bit rate, or degree of compression

Higher bit rate provides better quality sound, but file size and streaming time increase dramatically



Movies intended for desktop use should use 23 to 56 kbps

Movies for Web should use 16 to 24 kbps

High and Normal accuracy settings have same file size; should use High


Control Video in the Score

Can place imported digital video into any frame channel in Score and preview it in Video window

Digital video plays for duration of the sprite

Can extend video to occupy enough frames in Score to play completely

Can use a video tab in Property inspector to make video loop or pause


Play and Modify Video on the Stage

Performance of a video can vary when played in DirectorDTS (Direct to Stage) option provides best performance for Flash, QuickTime, or AVI videosDirector allows Flash, QuickTime, or AVI software on your computer to control the video playback


Playing Video Directly on the Stage

DTS option limits where you can locate video on the Stage in relation to other sprites; video is always in front of other spritesDTS option prohibits applying ink effects to a video



When you select DTS option, you can also choose:– Sync to Sound playback option to play

video in synchronization with audio soundtrack

– Play Every Frame (No Sound) playback option to play every frame of video at normal, maximum, or fixed speed without soundtrack



For QuickTime videos, you can also select Controls check box to display controller bar, which has DVD-type buttons to start, stop, and step through QuickTime video on Stage.


Cropping and Scaling a Video

Can crop any unwanted areas around edge of video or resize video to fit StageCropped edges are hidden, not removedCan use Scale option to change size or dimension of a video
