2009-10 Season Preview

Under the guidance of new Head Coach Leslie Shevlin, the Willamette University men’s and women’s swimming teams are taking the initial steps on their way to becoming top challengers in the Northwest Conference. Even the first achievements in the overall rebuilding process take a commitment to hard work and a winning attitude. Several swimmers will lead the Bearcats as they compete in dual meets and at invitational events this season. Here’s a look at Willamette’s strengths in each stroke and the I.M.

Freestyle Freshman Lauren Ballinger will make herpresence known in the women’s sprint events, while Michael McGeehan will sprint for the men. The distance freestyle is shaping up to be a good event for the Bearcats with seniors Jenna Larrow and Kevin Tangeman leading the charge.Hanna Connett, a junior, returns after reachingthe consolation finals in the 500-yard freestyleat the NWC Championships last season.

Butterfly Gwen Schulze, a senior, is looking to havea standout year in the butterfly events. At theNWC Championships last year, she finished insixth place in the 100-yard butterfly and tookeighth place in the 200-yard butterfly. Depth inthe 100 and 200 butterfly will be provided by sophomore Kara Koetje and freshman Kayla Kosaki. On the men’s side, Tangeman will lead the way in the butterfly events, with freshmanIan McGahan also competing.

Backstroke Schulze also looks to make a splash in the backstroke events. Adding depth will be juniorChelsea Ibarra along with sophomore Laura Coddington. Jacob Munson-McGee will lead the men’s team in both the 100-yard backstroke andthe 200-yard backstroke events.

Breaststroke Willamette has talent and depth ready forthe breaststroke events. Leading the team in the

sprint breaststroke will be sophomore Janelle Higashida. Connett and senior Lauren Gard will compete on the longer breaststroke eventsthroughout the season.

Individual Medley Schulze, Koetje, Higashida and Kosaki give the Bearcats a formidable front in the individual medley. They also will be able to contribute in the medley relay events.

Building for the Future Shevlin has a plan with three primary areas of focus for moving the swimming teams toward a highly successful future. “I need to get to know my swimmers and first meet their needs,” Shevlin said. “There will be some changes with things like practice ... and how we focus mentally for the road ahead, but to be competitive, we need to become a team. “My next focus will be recruiting,” she added. “I will seek out swimmers who can be held to the high academic standards of Willamette as well as the high standards I will be setting for the team. “My third main focus for rebuilding is community outreach,” Shevlin commented. “I know the swimmers want more support from the Willamette student body, and as a team, we needto reach out to the community for support.”

Jenna Larrow (Sr.) is a team captain and fourth year swimmer for the Bearcats.

Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and thenreturned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College.

Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. TheCollege of Idaho withdrewfrom the conference in 1978.Whitworth dropped out in1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only. TheNWC offers championships

in 18 sports (nine men’s and nine women’s). The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to formthe Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC membersshifted affiliation from the NAIA to theNCAA. Members knew the move wouldfoster equity, sportsmanship and a genuineconcern for all student-athletes.

The Willamette University men's and women's swimming teams helped make the grand opening of the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center a success on Saturday, Sept. 26. Approximately 7,000 people attended the event. Prior to working at the grand opening, the teams held their morning practice. They helped out in two shifts, with each group working for four hours at the Kroc Center. Team members helped with various tasks, including the dunk tank, carnival events, parking supervision, bus direction and trash pick-up. The Kroc Center is an 11-acre, multi-purpose facility that will be used for a variety of activities. It includes an Olympic-size pool as well as a leisure pool in addition to a fitness center, rock climbing wall and 288-seat chapel. The Kroc Center will be operated by The Salvation Army. "We wanted to reach out to the community by helping with the event. We also wanted to make our new team visible in Salem," said Willamette Head Coach Leslie Shevlin.
