2009 CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA VOLLEYBALL GUIDE

Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan volleyball. I am confident that Coach Stephanie Burner, her staff and the players will continue to build upon the volleyball tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful cam-pus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams have won statewide and regional titles and won our first Pennsylvania State Athletic Confer-ence’s (PSAC) Dixon Trophy for 2008-09. The Dixon Trophy is emblematic of athletic supremacy in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference—the PSAC, the premier Di-vision II athletic conference in America today. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment.

I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2008-09 academic year, a total of 167 California University of Pennsylvania student athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Spring 2009 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the sixth-straight semester, the Cal U athletic pro-grams compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regard-less of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the edu-cation occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college educa-tion takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Hamer Hall. Volleyball and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is impor-tant not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far re-moved from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2009 season and that you will sup-port all of these young athletes enthusiastically.

California University of Pennsylvania student-athletes posted a banner year in athletic competition during the 2008-09 season, six PSAC West titles, four PSAC crowns and four NCAA regional trophies with eight team and 15 individual ap-pearances in NCAA post-season play. In addition to athletic prowess, the Vulcans also excelled in the classroom. A total of 167 Cal U student athletes, representing all sports (fall, winter & spring), were named to the Spring 2009 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the sixth-straight semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. During the Spring 2009 semester, Vul-can student-athletes compiled a 3.11 GPA the highest aver-age since the Spring 2007 semester. Cal U also featured nine ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selections, highlighted by the school’s first Academ-ic All-American since 2006. To be eligible for the academic all-district honor, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.20 GPA or higher, reached sophmore athletic and academic standing at their institution and participated in at least 50 per-cent of the team’s games as a starter or an important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. In the spring, women’s cross country posted the highest team GPA at 3.71 and featured all nine runners on the Honor Roll. On the men’s side, the cross country team posted top GPA of the seven sports at 3.40 with seven runners holding a 3.00 GPA or better. In terms of pure numbers during the spring, football led all 16 sports with 27 representatives on the Honor Roll, followed by women’s soccer (21) and women’s track & field (19). Women’s cross country led all programs with 100 percent of its team (nine-of-nine) on the Honor Roll. Cal U also boasted 37 student-athletes that registered a perfect 4.0 GPA during one or both of the semesters.

Mountain Conference titles and a 41-6 record in two seasons. The Blue Devils also advanced to the PIAA state playoffs for the first time in school history in 2004 before repeating the feat in 2005. The follow-ing year, Burner accepted an as-sistant coaching position with North Alabama and helped guide the Lions to an ap-pearance in the National Cham-pionship match. After starting the season 7-5, UNA mounted a 28-match win streak to advance to the title game after winning the Gulf South Conference and South Central Re-gional Tournaments. Burner served as the Lions’ recruiting co-ordinator and worked with the team’s defen-sive players and outside hitters. During her collegiate career, Burner was a record-setting outside hitter while playing for Edinboro. She helped the Fighting Scots post three 20-win seasons and advance to the PSAC Championship match in four-con-secutive years. During her junior season, she established a then-school record for digs with 565 and was named a Daktronics Second-Team All-American as Edinboro won its second PSAC Tournament title in four years. As a senior captain, Burner broke her own school record by recording 568 digs to help the Fighting Scots advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals and post a 26-9 overall record. She earned All-PSAC West First-Team and All-Atlantic Region honors after finishing her ca-reer with the then-school record 1,707 career digs. The Upper St. Clair High School gradu-ate now ranks second in Edinboro history in career digs. She also is among the school’s all-time leaders in total attempts (2,658) and games played (455), In the 2006-07 academic year, Burner was named to the Edinboro all-time volleyball team.

HEAD COACH In her first season as head coach, Stephanie Burner guided the California University of P e n n s y l v a n i a volleyball team to the most wins in school history and an appearnace in the NCAA Quarterfinals. She enters her second season as head coach of the Vulcans in 2009 after a successful

tenure at the Univeristy of North Alabama as an assistant coach. Burner led the Vulcans to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West title last year after losing only one game in 12 match-es. Cal U then won its fifth PSAC Touranment Championship in program history before win-ning the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament without losing a game. Last season, Cal U featured a pair of Amer-ican Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Americans for the first time in school history. The Vulcans also excelled in the classroom, as 11 players were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes and two received ESPN The Magazine Aca-demic All-District honors. Despite being only in her second season with the program, Burner is quite familiar with the PSAC as she was a four-year starter at rival Edinboro University (1999-2002). During her play-ing career, the Fighting Scots posted an 87-41 overall record (.680) and earned four NCAA

Ashley Walton is in her second season as an assistant coach with the Vulcans, but is certainly no stranger to volleyball in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Walton was a two-time All-American and teammate of head coach Stephanie Burner at rival Edinboro University. Walton finished her career with the Fighting Scots (2000-03) as the school’s all-time leader with 1,906 career kills and ranks among the top players in school history with 403 total blocks and 466 games played. She made an immediate impact with Edinboro, earning PSAC West Rookie of the Year and Atlantic Region Freshman of the Year honors after the Fighting Scots advanced to the PSAC Champion-ship match and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. A middle hitter, she helped lead Edinboro to the 2001 PSAC Championship and another NCAA Tournament appearance. As a junior, Walton earned AVCA Third-Team All-America honors after leading the team with 462 kills and 96 blocks as the Fighting Scots advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time since 1998.

The Vulcans led all of NCAA Division II and set a program record with 40 wins last season.

Walton then registered a single-season school record 634 kills in 2003 as Edinboro posted a 26-12 overall record. For her efforts, she

was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and an AVCA Third-Team All-American. The only AVCA All-American in program history, Walton helped Edinboro post a 91-42 over-all record (.684) in her four seasons and the Fighting Scots advanced to the NCAA Tournament in all four years. Walton was a four-time All-PSAC West selection, including a three-time, first-team hon-oree. After earning her bachelor of science degree in Health and Physical Education, Walton started her coaching career at Littlestown High School in Littlestown, Pa. After two years working with the girls’ junior varsity volleyball program, she accepted the varsity head-coaching respon-sibility with the Thunderbolts in 2006. She also served three years as the girls’ track & field coach at Littlestown High School, working with the jumpers (long, triple and high). A native of Manchester, Pa., Walton also was a volunteer coach at the West Shore YMCA, where she worked with an under-16 club volleyball team. Walton, like Burner, was one of 15 former Fighting Scots named to Edinboro’s all-time volleyball team.

2009 CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA VOLLEYBALL GUIDE24

PSAC Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to

provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, two assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.
