    Food Matters Manitoba (FMM) has compleed is ourh year as an organizaion and con-

    inues o srenghen he ood securiy o Manioba individuals and communiies. Te organizaions

    long erm goal is o engage Maniobans oward healhy, air, susainable ood or all. FMM ocuses on

    hree major objecives: public educaion and awareness; developing neworks and parnerships; and

    increasing communiy and organizaional capaciy.

    FMM had he opporuniy o connec wih over 52,000 Maniobans a more han 150 communiy dis-

    plays and evens. Many more Maniobans had he opporuniy o learn abou ood securiy and FMM

    hrough media coverage in papers such as he Winnipeg Free Press and he Manioba Co-operaor. A

    oal o 34 sories in publicaions across he province shared inormaion abou FMM and ood secu-

    riy wih he broader public, and here were over 233,000 his on heir websie in 2008-2009.

    In addiion o implemening over 20 ood securiy projecs, FMM parnered wih more han 125 or-

    ganizaions in 2008-2009 o bring skil ls, knowledge, programs and resources o groups and individu-

    als ha have idenied needs relaed o ood securiy. FMMs major evens brough ogeher large

    numbers o people who proved o be a very recepive audience, and hey saw huge increases in public

    paricipaion his pas year - mos noably a conerences, armers markes, healh and nuriion o-

    rums, and gardening evens. Te organizaion also beneed rom nearly 4000 voluneer hours rom

    is Board and oher supporers.

    Eat Local, Buy Local ProjectTe Ea Local, Buy Local pilo projec involves a bilingual public ed-

    ucaion campaign ha includes grocery sore shel signage o Mani-

    oba grown and processed producs, a sore ron display eauring

    educaional maerials on he benes o eaing locally, and local ood

    reques cards. Te projec can be ound in 16 sores hroughou ur-ban, norhern and rural Manioba.

    Food Miles School WorkshopsTis projec delivered ineracive workshops on ood miles, local

    ood sysems, and susainable agriculure o sudens a all grade

    levels and o communiy groups across he province. Tere have

    been more han 20 workshops a 12 schools and venues, reaching

    over 700 sudens and eachers. An ineracive Food Miles Jeop-

    ardy Game was also developed and aken o armers markes across

    Manioba.

    Food Security &Northern Harvester NewslettersTe organizaion is in is hird year o disribuing quarerly newsle-

    ers ha prole sories ranging rom new Canadian urban armers,

    universiy suden gardens, norhern communiy ood champions,

    eaing locally, heirloom vegeables and radiional plans, global

    ood issues, and upcoming evens. A second quarerly newsleter

    ocuses specically on ood securiy projecs in norhern Manioba.

    Boh newsleters are an imporan connecion or our geographi-

    cally broad nework o parners and sakeholders, and go ou o over1000 groups and individuals.

    Food Security Network WebsiteIn parnership wih he Bayline Regional Roundable, FMM main-

    ains he Manioba Food Securiy Nework websie a www.mani-

    obaoodsecuriy.ca. Te websie highlighs upcoming evens, ea-

    ures communiy ood projecs, and hoss resources. FMM plans o

    launch a public educaion websie in 2010.

    Community food security is a situation in which all community residents obtain a safe,

    culturally acceptable, nutritionally adequate diet through a sustainable food system that

    maximizes community self-reliance and social justice. (Hamm & Bellows, 2003)

    Northern Harvest Forumin ThompsonTe Norhern Harves Forum included hands-on

    workshops eauring raising chickens in he norh,

    ood preservaion, ood dehydraing, radiional

    ood producion, gardening in he Norh, mobi-lizaion o communiies, and sraegic planning

    around ood. Te orum saw a 50% increase in

    atendees, wih over 120 paricipans rom across

    he norh. Te even was a chance o showcase ex-

    ising nuriion, healh, and ood securiy projecs

    in he Norh, as well as develop new skills and

    communiy capaciy, wih norherners growing

    good ood or hemselves.

    Growing Local 2009 FoodSecurity ConerenceTe Growing Local, Geting Vocal ood securiy

    conerence was held February 20-21 a Universiy

    o Winnipeg, wih nearly 300 atendees, 30 work-

    shop sessions, and 75 preseners. Te conerencewas a chance o showcase exising ood securiy

    projecs and develop new skills, as paricipans

    worked owards greaer ood securiy in Manio-

    ba. A highligh was a local ood dinner eauring

    Manioba cuisine rom eigh resaurans and eigh

    arms, which provided an opporuniy o increase

    rural-urban connecions and consumer awareness

    o he availabiliy o local ood.

    Northern Grocers Forumsin Thompson & The PasFMM parnered wih Bayline Regional Rounda-

    ble o coordinae wo norhern grocers orums o

    explore how o increase he availabiliy o healhy,

    afordable ood in sores in norhern Manioba. Avariey o sores, rom independen small grocers

    and convenience sores o larger chain sores and

    a ood mail carrier were invied. Presenaions

    included such opics as communiies looking

    o sar heir own sores and ood buying clubs,

    he Norhern Healhy Foods Iniiaive, Healhy

    School Snack and Lunch programs, and he

    Freezer Purchase Program. Te orum generaed

    a repor ha oulined seven sraegic opporuni-

    ies o increase ood securiy in he Norh.

    Networks and PartnershipsPerhaps FMMs greatest strength is its ability to oster collabo-

    ration and build partnerships with other organizations, lead-

    ing to tangible outcomes and increases in the ood security o

    Manitobans. FMM partnered with more than 125 organiza-

    tions in 2008-2009 to bring skills, knowledge, programs and

    resources to groups and individuals that have identifed needs

    related to ood security.

    Under the guidance o the Community Liaison, FMM also nur-

    tured the development o six new networks, or a total o nine

    across the province, including: The North End Food Security

    Network, United Urban Growers Network, The Brandon Food

    Security Network, The University of Manitoba Food Security

    Network, Urban Farmers Market Network, and the Newcom-

    ers Inner City Growers Network. The most successul o these

    is an active ood security network in Winnipegs North End, with

    more than 40 participating organizations.

    Local Food ProjectsFMM compleed is second year o work on local ood projecs in

    communiies across he province. Resources were made available

    or small-scale ood producion and nuriion projecs ha buil

    communiy capaciy and ocused on diabees prevenion.

    ABORIGINAL VISIONING FOR THE NORTH END

    A learning kichen or Aboriginal women a Aboriginal Visioning was

    developed. Paricipans me on a weekly basis and learned nuriion

    and cooking skills and were able o ake home ood o heir amilies.

    FLIN FLON CHARTER CHAPTER

    Over 100 communiy members paricipaed in a communiy con-

    ainer gardening vegeable projec.

    WINNIPEG COMMUNITY GARDENING NETWORK

    A oal o 23 communiy gardeners atended wo waer barrel work-

    shops. Paricipans learned how o make and mainain he barrels,

    which were hen disribued o communiy gardens or everyones use.

    ROBLIN NETWORK

    More han 100 people atended a ase o Roblin Local Food Mar-

    ke and Fesival held in he communiy las summer.

    100 MILE MANITOBA

    Approximaely 40 paricipans atended six workshops ocused on ood

    preservaion, solar ood dehydraion, and canning and preserving.

    WINNIPEG BEACH COMMUNITY & SCHOOL GARDENS

    Wih sudens playing an inegral role, he Winnipeg Beach School

    creaed a communiy garden or sudens and he general public.

    More han 80 sudens have paricipaed in gardening workshops

    and classes a he sie so ar.

    FARMERS MARKET ASSOCIATION OF MANITOBA

    marke producs.

    THE THOMPSON ZOO

    Tompson Zoo iniiaed a small-scale chicken producion aciliy.

    Zoo visiors were able o see he chickens rom he chick sage on, and

    more han 50 people paricipaed in chicken producion workshops.

    CAMPERVILLE COMMUNITY COUNCIL

    Six communiy leaders paricipaed in lasagne garden and compos

    building workshops. Te sie is on he grounds o CampervillesCommuniy Council building.

    RESEAU COMMUNAUTAIRE

    A ood saey workshop was ofered and healhy eaing and com-

    muniy garden ino sessions are planned.

    THOMPSON COMMUNITY GARDENS

    Communiy gardens are being developed in parnership wih he

    Boys and Girls Club, Babys Bes Program, Tompson Personal Care

    Home, and Tompson and Area Home Schooling Families Group.

    CRANE RIVER

    A communiy garden is planned, and hey prepared he sie his

    year.

    DAUPHIN RIVER

    Commitee members are learning how o garden and use radi-

    ional plans.

    CAMPERVILLE FOOD BUYING CLUBA communiy animaor is developing a ood buying club and is work-

    ing owards is rs order wih 15 people or groups paricipaing.

    WEST BROADWAY GOOD FOOD CLUB
