Membranes are the Key to Superior Effluent Quality

• Hollow, porous plastic fibers with billions of microscopic pores on the surface

• The pores are thousands of times smaller in diameter than a human hair

• Pores form a physical barrier to suspended solids and colloidal particulates larger than the membrane pore size

Why Pretreatment ?

Ensure RO Reliability Remove colloidal matters, bacteria and inorganic suspended solids which will block the feed channels causing pressure dropRemove sparingly soluble salts, minimizing scalingTo minimize fouling due to bacteria growth

Page 9: 2009 Power Industry Technical Seminar · 2009 Power Industry Technical Seminar GE Water & Process Technologies. GE Water UF Membranes. Products to meet every need Custom Engineered

Reliable Pretreatment is Critical

> High rate of membrane fouling> High frequency of membrane cleaning> Lower recovery rates> High operating pressure> Poor product quality> Reduced membrane life> Reduced plant productivity

RO membranes are sensitive and require a continuous supply of high quality feed water.

Ineffective pretreatment can result in RO system problems, including:

Bacteria, mineral salts and shell fragments on SDI filter paper
