thiel college, located in Greenville, Pennsylvania, was founded by
German lutheran pioneers who came to the western part of the state
in the early decades of the 19th century. These hearty people had a
common heritage of language, culture and religion. The influence of the
church, particularly the newly formed "Pittsburgh Synod of the evangelical
lutheran Church," had a profound effect on the early academies which
flourished briefly and led to the founding of Thiel College.
The start in 1866 of Thiel hall, soon to become Thiel College, followed a
meeting between the Rev. dr. William A. Passavant and A. louis Thiel.
Passavant was educated at Jefferson College, a Presbyterian institution in
Canonsburg, and at Gettysburg Seminary, and proved to be God's man at
the right time and right place. his zest for truth, beauty and mercy led to
the establishment of numerous churches, educational institutions and
hospitals in the midwest.

season outlook
over the past few seasons therehas been mounting evidence that
the Thiel College women’s volleyball pro-gram had a very bright future ahead of it.Judging by the improvements it has made,it appears that the future is now.
There is a growing confidence and mo-mentum in Beeghly Gymnasium. Asfourth-year coach Steve Brewer and ayoung-but-experienced squad embark onthe 2009 campaign, expec-tations are high that theTomcats will claw their wayinto the upper ranks of thePresidents’ Athletic Confer-ence.
last year the Tomcats fin-ished 14-18 overall, whileposting a winning confer-ence record of eight winsversus seven losses. Their in-conference success meritedthem a fourth-seeded berthand home game in the firstround of the PAC tourna-ment.
Those achievements wereearly steps toward biggerthings to come, says Brewer.
“The 2008-2009 seasonwas the best season this program has hadin decades,” he said. “And it was a seasonof firsts. Both on and off the court wewere a success.
“last year was the first time we hosteda playoff match. It was the first time wehad three players voted to the all-confer-ence teams. It was the first time we trav-eled and competed internationally. And, itwas the first time we won the AmericanVolleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)Team Academic Award.”
eleven letter-winners return for theTomcats. Among them are All-PAC per-formers: first teamer Abby Kiger, a senioroutside hitter; as well as honorable men-tions Megan Kay, a sophomore outsidehitter; and junior libero Stephanie Ship-ley.
“Abbey Kiger is going into her seniorseason having broken almost every teamoffensive record,” said Brewer. “She alsoled the PAC in kills last season with 453.Abbey is a leader on the court and we
look to her to set the pace for eachmatch this season.”
Megan Kay gained valuable experiencein her freshman season, and Brewer ex-pects her to emerge as force as threat onthe outside. Shipley led the team in digs, averaging over five per set; and finishednear the top of the conference in thatcategory as well. Junior danielle dwyer, and sophomore Jill Spino also add signifi-
cant experienceand depth to thedS/libero posi-tion.
Junior setterMadison Chylik isthe team’s captainand is describedby Brewer as“one of the con-ference’s mostunderrated play-ers. She is a trueleader. I look for(her) to make abig impact thisseason; both inthe conferenceand for theteam.”
While last season’s marks were signifi-cant steps forward for the program,Brewer feels that injuries may have heldthe Tomcats back somewhat. This season, however, a healthy fleet of returning play-ers with experience will produce greaterresults.
“last season our middles and right sidesdid an admirable job considering an in-jury-riddled season,” he said.
Among the returners are juniors Cyndiand Joy Metzler, outside and middle hit-ters, respectively; sophomore middle hit-ter Chelsi Clark; and sophomore outsidehitter Sara Weikart.
“With valuable experiencegained from last season,” Brewersaid, “this is a group of playersthat has shown great improve-ment.”
Along with returning veterans,Brewer is excited about his in-coming freshman class, which in-cludes Megg Andrews, Kelly
Barzak, Britney Brown, Alyssa Chine,Chelsea Meister, and Ashely donnelly.
“We have an amazing class coming inthis fall,” he said. “They are all talented, smart, and athletic. We expect them tomake practices much more competitiveand to compete for starting positions im-mediately.”
This enviable blend of experience, youth, and a strong freshman class shouldmake the Tomcats a force to be reckonedwithin the conference for both this andfuture seasons. Brewer is confident thatgreater success is just around the corner.
“Thiel is poised to take something it hasnever had,” said Brewer, “a conferencetitle.
That’s exactly our expectation goinginto this season. Going into my fourthseason at Thiel, we have the leadershipneeded to set such a lofty goal for theteam.”
In addition to their on-court improve-ments last season, the Tomcats were rec-ognized for their accomplishments in theclassroom as well. Five athletes werenamed to the PAC academic honor roll, while the team was one of 77 in NCAAdivision III to be honored with theAVCA’s Team Academic Award. TheAVCA cites teams in each division withcumulative grade-point-averages of 3.3 -or better- on a 4-point scale, or 4.1 on a
5-point scale.
