Defiance College is a private liberal arts-based college providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of more than 1,000 students. Defiance College offers students the best of both worlds. In a small campus envi-ronment, students can have hands-on experiences in their field of study through quality internships, domestic and international travel, diverse cultural encounters, and distinctive service and research opportunities for personal and professional growth.

The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Com-munity Involvement. Defiance College has been named for six-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Com-munity Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past three years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College was also selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classification.

Defiance College offers students a world of opportunities to en-hance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement.

The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and fac-ulty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2011-2012 year in Belize, Cambodia and Ghana. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolu-tion and cultural awareness, with the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization.

Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood.

Student life is an important part of a Defiance College educa-tion. Activities include student government, musical and the-ater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity.

As a national leader in the field of service learning and engage-ment, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better in their com-munities, in distant villages and in their careers. Approximately 10,000 men and women across the globe claim Defiance Col-lege as their alma mater, and they excel in all walks of life.

THIS IS DEFIANCE COLLEGE JACKETS IN THE COMMUNITYDefiance College has challenged students to defy the ordi-nary – to explore academic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraor-dinary college experience.

Nowhere else will you find students committed to their com-munities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and en-gagement.

During the 2011-12 academic year, Defiance College student-athletes contributed more than 2,000 hours of service in their community and around the country.

Many student-athletes at DC have taken active roles in lead-ership and service initiatives campus-wide. Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a di-verse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change. Volleyball team members Lindsay McDaniel, Caroline Hesterman, Chelsea Ludeman, Haley Walchle and Alicia Kalik are DC Service Leaders.

Defiance College is featured for excellence in blending aca-demics with community work by The Princeton Review in its Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstand-ing Community Involvement. Defiance is included in the Presi-dent’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service.

Brie Brenner took over as the head volleyball coach at Defiance College on January 17, bring-ing strong local ties and a rich volleyball pedigree with her to DC.

Brenner is a Defiance, Ohio native and was a two-time Western Buckeye League Player of the Year, while also earning First-Team All-Ohio honors in 2001 for Defiance High. After concluding a standout prep career, Brenner began a collegiate career at Ohio State University and then transferred to the University of Washington for her final three seasons.

During her time with the Huskies, Brenner became a two-time All-PAC-10 performer and led Washington to a pair of PAC-10 Championships. The success continued on the national stage, where Brenner and UW advanced to the NCAA Division I Final Four in 2004 and 2005 and claimed the NCAA Division I National Championship in 2005.

Brenner went on to play two years of professional volleyball in Puerto Rico and was voted into the athletic Hall of Fame at the University of Washington, as well as Defiance High School in 2010.

Along with her extensive success on the volleyball court at the collegiate and professional ranks, Brenner also boasts eight years of coaching experience at various club and prep levels, which includes stints on staff with Defiance High and multiple club pro-grams.

Brenner began her coaching career as an assistant for the Cascade Volleyball Club in 2004 and also worked the UW summer volleyball camps from 2004 through 2006, before returning to northwest Ohio.

Since that time, Brenner spent six years as the director of the Hagerty Volleyball Camp that hosted summer camps at several local high schools, including Defiance, Ayersville and Hicksville.

Brenner also served as the head coach of the Toledo Volleyball Club from 2008 through 2011, leading the team to three-straight appearances at the United States of America Volleyball Nationals and working as the club’s performance trainer during each of those final three campaigns.

Kayla Hartman joins the Defiance College staff as an assistant coach for the volleyball team for the 2012-2013 season, one year removed from finishing an impressive playing career at Indiana Institute of Technology.

Hartman graduated from Indiana Tech in December of 2011 with a degree in psychology and a minor in athletic training, while maintaining a grade point average of 3.9. Hartman excelled on the court as well as in the classroom during her four-year career. Hartman helped guide the Warriors to the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship all four years as a

member of the squad and was named the WHAC Libero of the Year for the 2011 season. Hartman finished her career with over 2,000 digs.

The Fort Wayne native also received a number of other awards over her college stint at Indiana Tech. Hartman received the Bill Hiatt Scholarship and Leepoxy Scholar-Athlete Award in 2011. Hartman also earned Academic All-American for three seasons from 2009 through 2011.

Along with coaching, Hartman will work towards a master’s degree in business from Defiance College.

SEASON OUTLOOK DC VOLLEYBALL 2012

www.DefianceAthletics.com 5

The Defiance College volleyball team has many new faces this season, both on the court and on the sideline. The 2012 season marks the first for Brie Brenner, a Defiance native, as the head coach of the Yellow Jackets.

Brenner inherits a team that had its fair share of ups and downs last season. The Jackets went on a streak of winning 10-of-11 matches but also had multiple four match losing streaks. DC finished with a 14-16 overall record and a 4-5 record in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, finishing sixth in the HCAC standings.

With only one senior on the 2012 squad, the Purple and Gold will rely heavily on its upper-classmen for experience and leadership. Brenner will face the tough task of quickly meshing the returners and newcomers to form a cohe-sive unit. The Jackets return sev-en players from the 2011 team and add five fresh faces to the squad.

SETTERSThe Yellow Jackets return one of the top setters in the HCAC from the 2011 season. Sophomore Ali-cia Kalik had a stellar freshman season and looks to build on last year’s success. Kalik was named the HCAC Freshman of the Year for the 2011 season because of her ability to excel and make an impact on so many facets of the game. Kalik is what volleyball coaches call an “active setter,” meaning she is involved in more than just setting. The sophomore recorded 776 assists, 85 kills, 141 digs and 39 total blocks last year

and also led the team in aces with 30. If Kalik builds on her success and continues to improve, the sophomore could become the top setter in the HCAC and one of the best in all of NCAA Division III. The other setter for Defiance is fellow sophomore Alyssa Tur-ton, who saw limited action as a freshman. Turton posted a stand-out performance against Illinois College on October 29 with 39 assists in a four-set match. The sophomore could make an impact in the service game for the Jack-ets, as Turton has developed a strong serve over the offseason.

LIBEROS/DEFENSIVESPECIALISTSSenior Lindsay McDaniel and freshman Rebecca Kain will com-pete for playing time at the libero position for the Yellow Jackets. McDaniel played the 2011 sea-son primarily as a defensive specialist. In that role, the senior recorded the third highest dig total on the squad with 170, an average of 1.79 digs per set. Mc-Daniel brings experience, leader-ship and consistency to the young squad. Kain is looking to make an immediate impact for DC. The freshman is described as a smart player, who continually looks for ways to better her game. Regard-less of which player starts, both will be counted on to anchor the backcourt and post high passing percentages to turn the defense into offense for the Yellow Jacket attack.

Sophomore Caroline Hesterman and freshmen JoNae Apps and Katey McQueary are the three defensive specialists for the Pur-

ple and Gold. Hesterman saw lim-ited action in her freshman cam-paign but looks to use her year of college experience to make an impact on the 2012 season. Apps is described as a solid defender who is a consistent option on the back row. Along with being a de-fensive player, McQueary has the potential to help the Jackets with an impressive serve.

MIDDLE BLOCKERSThe Purple and Gold’s middle blockers will be led by junior Alex-is Pierce. The Wauseon, Ohio standout recorded 156 kills last season with a .256 attacking per-centage. Pierce is the top return-ing Jacket for total blocks, as the junior totaled 91, an average of 0.84 per set last year. Another as-set that Pierce gives the Jackets is height. The junior is the tallest member of the undersized squad and is listed at 6-1. Joining Pierce on the front line is freshman Ha-ley Walchle, who lacks height but makes up for it in speed and athleticism. Walchle also adds versatility to DC, as the freshman can play multiple positions and is a well-rounded player.

OUTSIDE HITTERSDC will be anchored by a trio of ex-perienced players on the outside. Juniors Christa Seidenstricker and Chelsea Ludeman will be joined by sophomore transfer Bree An-derson to create a formidable attack. Seidenstricker will make the transition from libero to out-side hitter this season. The junior thrived in the defensive role but has the tools and skills necessary to make the change to outside

hitter. Ludeman is looking to have a bounce-back season after an injury plagued sophomore year. The former HCAC Freshman of the Year will play the position of opposite hitter for the Jacket at-tack. Ludeman has improved her focus and is primed for a notewor-thy season. The wildcard for the Purple and Gold will be Anderson, who transferred to DC from Tus-culum College in Tennessee. The sophomore brings a relentless competitive mindset to the team and raw athletic ability. Anderson will play a major role in the Jack-ets’ success this year.

MEET THE JACKETSDC ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY

The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical ac-tivity that fits within the general mission of the college to de-velop the whole person.

The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportuni-ties for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college cam-pus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equi-table sports opportunities will be available to both genders.

The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic star-dom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics pro-gram, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values.

The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement … to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.
