I hope you have grown during Lent as you fasted from thinking you’re not good

enough or that you have to do it all on your own. I hope you have noticed how God is already powerfully alive in your life as you welcomed and let go with the Welcoming Prayer. I pray your celebration of Holy Week and Easter, the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus the Christ, awakens more fully in you the steadfast mercy and love of God. I don’t know about you, but I love waking up to the new energy of spring and the resurrection incarnated all around me in tree and bird and sun-splashed water.

In the spring, I naturally find myself reflecting on the newness of things. One of those for me is an emerging consciousness about being intimately connected to all creation. I find myself wanting to leave behind the mechanistic, atomistic, Newtonian world view that formerly left me an indifferent consumer who saw humans as the top of the creation pyramid with permission to freely manipulate anything lower down the slope. I am challenged and encouraged by these words from Joanna Macy: “Now, in our time, these three rivers—anguish for our world, scientific breakthroughs, and ancestral teachings—flow together. From the confluence of these rivers we drink. We awaken to what we once knew: we are alive in a living Earth, the source of all we are and can achieve. Despite our conditioning by the industrial society of the last two centuries, we want to name, once again, this world as holy. These insights and experiences are necessary to free us from the grip of the Industrial Growth Society. They offer us nobler goals and deeper pleasures. They help us redefine our wealth and our worth. The reorganization of our perceptions liberates us from illusions about what we need to own and what our place is in the order of things. [Moved] beyond tired old notions of competitive individualism, we come home to each other and our mutual belonging in the living body of Earth.” Joanna Macy and Molly Young Brown, Coming Back to Life: The Updated Guide to the Work that Reconnects (New Society Publishers: 2014), 6, 14.

I think this is what Jesus meant when he said he draws all things together in himself.

Recently, I attended the Rural Ministry Conference sponsored by Wartburg Seminary as continuing

education. The focus was on collaborative and cooperative ministry among small congregations. The primary presenter is currently the pastor of four, 50 member churches in rural Texas that intentionally formed a collaborative ministry, sharing staff and resources to keep alive all four churches in four towns 10 miles apart. Much to their surprise, they are thriving and even growing. While this does not exactly match our situation, I came away feeling positive about our life at St. Paul. We have evidence of a lot of the “thriving facets”: trust, communication (i.e. All Leadership meeting – this model was given as an effective way to bring together councils and committees from different yoked communities or within a larger church), community events, a welcoming and healing spirit, a catechetically supported youth program, generous outreach and missional support, ecumenical prayer and activities, and a significant stable worshipping population.

An invitation from the presenter that I anticipate we will further explore is to identify our partners in the community and strengthen those bonds while exploring new partner relationships for ministry and outreach (i.e. families of prisoners, elderly poor). I look forward to the adventure.

Shalom,

Pastor Rodney

Discipleship Corner – Ken Winter, Director of Discipleship Ministry

The Opioid Crisis Is Surging: "You realize getting clean would be a lot of work," 26 year old suicide survivor Mady Ohlman, says, her voice rising. "And you realize dying would be a lot less painful. You also feel like you'll be doing everyone else a favor if you die." Ohlman, who has now been clean and sober for more than four years, says many drug users hit the same point, when the disease and the pursuit of illegal drugs crushes their will to live. Ohlman is among at least 40 percent of active drug users who wrestle with depression, anxiety or another mental health issue that increases the risk of suicide.

"No one has answered the chicken and egg [question]," says Dr. Kiame Mahaniah, a family physician who runs the Lynn Community Health Center in Lynn, Mass. Is it that patients "have mental health issues that lead to addiction, or did a life of addiction then trigger mental health problems?" With so little data to go on, "it's so important to provide treatment that covers all those bases," Mahaniah says. When doctors do look deeper into the reasons patients addicted to opioids become suicidal, some predict they'll find deep reservoirs of depression and pain.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 800-273-8255. Adapted from a story found in the reporting partnership berween NPR, WBUR and Kaiser Health News. BEBINGER, MARTHA. “How Many Opioid Overdoses Are Suicides?” National Public Radio, 152 Mar. 2018, www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2018/03/15/591577807/how-many-opioid-overdosesare-suicides.

How is this epidemic touching your family, our faith community, and Jones County? What are we to look for and what can we do? Any efforts to heal are a step in the right direction.

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, St. Paul will be launching its Mental Health Ministry May 2018. Be on the lookout for information on how you can be a part of this important ministry.

Tuesday April 3rd- Drumming for Healing: bring your favorite per-cussion instrument to join in the natural

rhythm of life. We will share gratitude and intentions, then drum for good ener-gy to permeate all creation. Some drums will be provided.

Tuesday, April 10th-Holden Evening Prayer: Beautiful sung prayer composed by Marty Haugen that can be soothing and uplifting.

Tuesday, April 17th-Centering/Meditation led by Jane Ortgies

Tuesday, April 24th- Holden Evening Prayer

Tuesday, May 1st- Communal Anointing for Healing

Burdens are divided when shared. Anointing with oil for strength and healing was maintained as a laudable ritual in the Lutheran tradition because of its connection to baptism and God's promise of grace. This practice has fallen away in many communities over the years but we want to reclaim its power at St. Paul.

Notes from the Parish Nurse,

Nationwide April is known for “Donate Life America” month. There are an amazing 115,000 people waiting for an organ, eye, or tissue donation. Also amazing is that 22 people die each day because the organ they needed was not donated in time.

Being a registered Iowa donor you alone could save up to 8 lives with organ donations, restore sight to 2 people with cornea(eye) donation, and heal up to 75 lives with tissue(skin) donation.

You might ask who can be a donor, is there a cost to be a donor, and does my religion support being a donor? Peo-ple of all ages and medical history should consider them-selves potential donors and there is no cost to be a donor. The ELCA recognizes being an organ and tissue donor as a means to save and renew life/health as well as a blessing of God given through human beings.

95% of Americans are in favor of being a donor, though only 54% are registered.

For more information , please contact the Iowa Donor Net-work at 1-800-831-4131 or “[email protected]” These statistics for me are powerful food for thought. If you would like a call or visit from a nurse please call the church office.

WATER AND WITNESS As the April Pulse goes to press, we’re in the last days of the Water and Witness project. Our leadership team has worked to help St. Paul focus on the need for funding the ELCA’s water-related projects, relating the call to provide water for a world in need to God’s baptismal call for us to witness to that world in need. Weekly “noisy” offerings have been supported generously, and our original pledge to our partner congregations in the Southeastern Iowa Synod has been nearly doubled.

What can we do now? We can join together in keeping this project alive, as we join in prayer:

Lord God, source of living water, you have seen the need of your creation to be nourished by the water of life. Empower our church community to work for access to the water that is life, through

Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

ANAMOSA LUNCHES FOR YOUTH

Thanks to all of the St. Paul ALY volunteers who packed and delivered the weekend

bags of food to our Anamosa schools during March.

And a special shout out to the WD4 middle & high

school youth who volunteered to pack the bags on a very busy Wednesday

evening.

In a few years, St. Paul Lutheran Church will be celebrating it’s 100 Anniversary.

We would like all members of St. Paul to go through your old pictures. St. Paul was established in 1923. We are looking for any old pictures of our past members– especially weddings, birthday celebrations, Vacation Bible School, Christmas, Sunday School, and baptisms that took place at St. Paul.

We are looking for photos from the beginning of church life of St. Paul from 1923 to present. Please bring the photos to the church office (we can make a copy) for Jan Allaire. When you bring in the photos, please label them with the names of people in photo, name of event/activity, and date if possible. Thank you for your help! We are proud of our St. Paul Lutheran Church family and it’s history. If you have any questions, please contact Jan at (319)462-4223

Council Minutes- St. Paul Lutheran 3/19/18 Members Present: Ralph Andresen, Doug Fairbanks, Colin Stifler, Carlene Vavricek, Lori Reynolds, Shawn Countryman, Brian Darrow, Jim Hankemeier, Barb Wil-son, Pastor Bluml Minutes/Agenda: Minutes from the February Council meeting were submitted and agenda was shared. Lori made a motion to approve the minutes and Shawn se-conded the motion. Pastor’s Report:

1. Deaths- Kim Walker Luchtenburg Chambers, baptized at St. Paul 2. Baptisms- We anticipate 3 at Easter Vigil 3. Preparing several for First Communion: choice of Maundy Thursday or any liturgy of the second and third weeks of Easter. 4. New Members- preparing to receive some at Easter Vigil 5. I attended the Rural Ministry Conference spon-sored by Wartburg Seminary as Continuing Educa-tion. Focus was on collaborative and cooperative ministry among small congregations. The primary presenter is currently the pastor of four, 50 member churches in rural Texas who intentionally formed a collaborative ministry, sharing staff and resources to keep alive all four churches in four towns 10 miles apart. Much to their surprise, they are thriving and even growing. While this does not exactly match our situation, I came away feeling positive about our life at St. Paul. We have evidence of a lot of the “thriving facets”: trust, communication (i.e. All Leadership meeting – this model was given as an effective way to bring together councils and committees from dif-ferent yoked communities or within a larger church), community events, a catechetically supported youth program, generous outreach and missional support, ecumenical prayer and activities, and a significant stable worshipping population.

An invitation from the presenter that I anticipate we will further explore is to identify our partners in the community and strengthen those bonds while exploring new partner relationships for ministry and outreach (i.e. families of prisoners, elderly poor).

Weekly prayer opportunities continue on Tues-days from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the church. The num-bers during Lent have been modest but those who attend express appreciation. Attendance might change when Lenten Wednesdays cease.

February Financial Reports: Brian shared the finan-cial reports. Giving was down during the month of Feb-ruary, but expenses are under control. Shawn moved to file the financial report, and the motion was seconded by Carlene.

New Business:

Pastor Bluml asked if the long pew in front of the pulpit could be switched out for the shorter pew. There is a lot of congestion in that front area during funerals, and there are usually only 2-3 peo-ple sitting in that pew during worship. Doug made a motion to swap the two pews, and Brian second-ed. Grounds and Maintenance will take care of this.

Pastor Bluml was asked to participate in the Jones County Ecumenical services at the Jones County Fair on July 22nd. In exchange for coming to the service, people attending would receive free tick-ets for that day at the fair. Since the service starts at 9:30, Pastor would have to cancel both of our normal worship services. The decision was made for us to promote this opportunity for those who would like to attend, but Pastor Rodney will not participate, so that our worship services can remain the same. Council would like to encourage families and youth to attend the Casting Crowns/Lauren Daigle concert together. We’ll discuss this more later.

Shawn shared that Brandy Miller asked about our youth or congregation participating in the Red Nose Day campaign. This is a yearly event sponsored by Walgreens that raises money to end child poverty. Council thought this would be best done with our youth in WD4. Children and Youth Ministry will plan this at the April meeting.

Council discussed what organizations the money offered during the Lenten services should go to. The decision was made to split the money equally be-tween the following: Jones County Safe and Healthy Youth Coalition, Water and Witness, National Youth Gathering trip.

The All Leader Meeting will start at 6:00 begin-ning in April. The team meetings will be shortened to 45 minutes, instead of 1 hour. We’ll adjust times as needed.

Agenda for Next Meeting:

Budget for next year

Nominating Committee Time and Date of Next meeting: April 9th following the All Leader Meeting Adjourn/Closing Prayer- Ralph led Council in a closing prayer. Lori moved to adjourn the meeting at 9:20 and the motion was seconded by Carlene. Respectfully submitted, Barb Wilson- Council Secretary
