It is truly hard to believe that our Fall Reunion is right around the corner. There is an excitement in the air for this Reunion for several reasons. Number one the Class is named for one of the finest Masons I know, Illustrious Brother Walter E. Ellenberger, 33º. Ill. Brother Ellenberger has certainly dedicated his life to Freemasonry and has labored faithfully in many of the various Masonic quarries. No finer Man or Mason will you ever want to meet. We owe it to Walter to have a good turn out.

Another reason for some of our excitement is the fact that we will be using the Performing Arts Center in Maumee for our Degree portrayals. What a nice facility. It is almost brand new and offers many of the best stage advantages to be found. The environment we will be in is top shelf and I do hope that many of you will come out to see this lovely facility as it should lend itself to the enhancement of our work. The Maumee Performing Arts Center is attached to the Maumee High School at 1147 Saco Street off of Key Street in Maumee.

One other item we will be rolling out at this Reunion is a brief explanation of each degree as it concludes. We hope that this will add to the Scottish Rite experience for our new candidates. The Toledo Lyceum will be doing the presentations. If they are well received we may consider doing them in the future.

The other thing you may have noticed is that Friday night is a big night for us. A social hour, the new 4º DVD and our evening meal begins the Reunion festivities. The candidates must attend this event in order to advance through the other degrees on Saturday. It is hoped that Petition signers, Mentors, Officers and interested Members will make an effort to attend.

On Saturday Louie Takacs of Takacs Meats will cater our lunch. After we close the Curtain on Saturday it’s back to the Holiday Inn French Quarter in Perrysburg for an afterglow.

We hope all of these items along with the normal good fellowship we have with each other will provide and Inspirational, Convenient and Enjoyable Reunion for all.

I do hope that there will be plenty of new candidates and that everyone has been working hard to get petitions!

The other thing for your consideration is the Christmas Gathering at the Toledo Zoo. This event has been very well attended the last several years and is growing. It is a great time and it is always enjoyed by those who come. Get your reservations in now and help us celebrate the Holiday Season. It would be fantastic to fill the Nairobi Pavilion.

As this will be the last Tidings for 2010 on behalf of the Board of Trustees, the Officers, Karen, Pam and myself we want to wish all of you the very best for 2011!

When thinking about Philadelphia PA one normally thinks about Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and the Art Museum where Sylvester Stallone ran up the steps in the Movie Rocky. It is also the setting for part of the Film National Treasure which dealt in large part with the Masonic Fraternity. There are of course many other important events associated with the City of Brotherly Love.

Two other important events took place in Philadelphia in August. The Supreme Council for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the United States of America held its annual meeting there and two Valley of Toledo Members were made Sovereign Grand Inspectors General and coroneted 33º Masons. Receiving this prestigious award were Brothers Dr. Christian A. King and Bernard S. Welniak, Jr. In conferring the degree the Supreme Council recognized them not only for their many contributions to Freemasonry but to their communities and society as well. Pictured are (from left to right) Illustrious Brother Dr. Christian A. King, 33º, Illustrious and Most Worshipful Brother Neil M. Smalley, 33º Deputy for Ohio and Illustrious Brother Bernard S. Welniak, Jr., 33º.

The other important event at Supreme Council occurred at the State Dinner for Ohio held on Tuesday evening August 31st. Illustrious Brother Dr. Dimitrios N. Xanthakos, 33º was honored by Illustrious and Most Worshipful Grand Master Terry W. Posey, 33º Grand Master of Masons in Ohio with the Grand Masters Community Service Award for the 11th Masonic District. In recognizing Illustrious Brother Xanthakos Grand Master Posey commented not only on his contributions to Medicine and Surgical Procedures (Dr. Xanthakos was a pioneer in the field of Laparoscopic Surgery) but for his many generous contributions to various parts of the world who

through no fault of their own lack knowledge of the most recent medical advancements which Dr. Xanthakos brings to them with no compensation. Dr. Xanthakos was to have been presented the Award in April of this year at the 11th Masonic District Grand Master Reception but was out of the country on one of his many humanitarian trips. Grand Master Posey really wanted to present this award to him in person and was pleased that he finally got the chance

to do so. Pictured from left to right are Illustrious Brother Dr. Xanthakos, his wife Ursula and Illustrious and Most Worshipful Brother Posey.

Tidings Quiz

This year's Supreme Council was held in Philadelphia, PA. As everyone knows, Philadelphia has played an important role in American history, and consequently has many historic landmarks. The Liberty Bell and Independence Hall among them. This month's quiz is about these historic landmarks.

Fact: The Liberty Bell is the most visited landmark in Philadelphia.

Question: What is the second most visited landmark?

The first brother that calls the office with the correct answer wins a free lunch with our Executive Secretary, Illustrious Brother Gary L. McElfresh, 33o.

Masonic Cinema

Festival Film 5“V for Vendetta”

Friday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m.At The Korn Manse

10918 Ramm Road Whitehouse OH 419 250-1773

Join us to celebrate “Guy Fawkes Day” at a special showing of the 2005 speculative fiction thriller “V for Vendetta” starring Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving, Stephen Rea and John Hurt. Set in a future totalitarian Britain, we follow the transformation of a young Evey Hammond (Portman) from fearful girl to fearless citizen through her contact with the mysterious and powerful “V” (Weaving). The theme of the film eludes to the November, 1605, Gunpowder Plot where rebels unsuccessfully attempted to blow up King James I and the House of Parliament. Named for one of the plot’s leaders, Guy Fawkes Day on November 5 has been celebrated in England every since with - you guessed it – fireworks, bonfires and burning effigies.

So, what does this have to do with Freemasonry? While it is true that politics and Freemasonry are usually separate concepts, Scottish Rite philosophy (according to Pike and others) addresses fundamental political rights and responsibilities in a free society. These themes are presented in the film and will be discussed.

The film will not be shown at Valley HQ but will be presented at the home of Ted and Caroline Korn at 10918 Ramm Road in Whitehouse. The presentation will conclude with a bonfire and appropriate celebrations. Please RSVP to the Valley HQ on your attendance and advise whether you wish to purchase a Guy Fawkes mask. Food and drinks will be available for a donation.

The Masonic Cinema thanks all who supported the 2010 Film Festival. Look in future Tidings for announcements for the 2011 Film Festival.

2010 Masonic Film Festival Concludes

In September, The Masonic Cinema featured the popular action film “Rob Roy” and in October watched as ill-tempered Templar’s got their due at the hands of the Saracens in the period piece “Kingdom of Heaven”. The Film Festival concludes on the theme of political freedom.
