    2010-11 VMI Basketball Season Prospectus22

Q -How has the team prepared for this sea-son and what is the feeling coming into theyear?

A- I think the kids are anxious to get over lastyear and the way you do that is preparing forthis year. I thought we had a great summer -the guys in summer school, they worked hard, liked playing with each other and with theaddition of the two freshmen it has beenworking well. We're excited about theprospects.

Q- Do you plan on keeping it up-tempo asyou've had in the past?

A- Absolutely, especially more fast than lastyear. We were down last year and averaged 88points a game and we had some games wherewe just didn't score like we should. The mainthing we are trying to shore up is ourrebounding and improve our defense by tryingto challenge more shots. What killed us last

year what a combination of rebounding andsecond shots. We did a pretty good job thefirst time, then they got the stick backs. Partof that was being so small and we'veaddressed that with recruiting and we're moreoptimistic that it will improve this year.

Q - Let's break it down position are by posi-tion, starting with the backcourt. You've got anall-conference performer back with seniorAustin Kenon.

A - He's a great leader and a great person. It'shard to believe he's a senior. Seems like hejust got here.Austin has a chance to do somegreat things. He doesn't have to have a greatyear, but if he has a solid year, he could be inthe top five in scoring at VMI and maybe theBig South all-time 3-point shooter. And to doall that within 3 years - that says somethingabout him and how he works. He's been greatin the classroom and he's just a great kid andwe're really going to miss him after this year,

but I look forwardto about 35 gameswith him this year.Just having his lead-ership and knowingthat he's more thanjust a shooter now.He can really takepeople off the drib-ble and take peopleto the rim and canalso get to the foulline. Last yearagainst Army, hehad 20 free throwattempts and made18 of them.AgainstHigh Point, he had18 free throwattempts, so if hecan get to the rimthat certainly helpshim. He's probablygoing to have moreof a bulls-eye onhis back this yearbecause he's one ofthe top scorerscoming back, buthe has some helpin the backcourtthis year, so thatwill help him. He'll

be able to play more off the ball which we areexcited about.

Q - Let's talk about the rest of the backcourtand that depth.

A- We have Ron Burks returning and he'll playa lot of things for us. He may even play #1though # 4 positions. Our new freshman pointguard Ron Glasgow, from what we've seen inindividual workouts, will be our point guard. We're excited about him and the kids loveplaying with him and he has a chance to bereally, really good. He knows when to findguys and their rhythm and range and it's justfun to coach. And he's a sponge. He's in myoffice four times a week asking how he canget better. You like to coach those kind ofkids.

Q - On the wings, you have two capable per-formers in Michael Sparks and Keith Gabriel.

A - Michael Sparks is coming off a very goodyear last year, and shot a very high percentagefrom 3-point range and we are looking formore of the same this year. Keith Gabriel hasreally developed his game more and hasworked on taking people off the dribble whichwe had been pushing him to do.This fall, hehas gotten better at that. Keith is not just astandstill shooter. He can actually get to therim which gets him to the line, also. Both ofthose guys on the wing will be very good 3-point shooters for us.

Q - Talk about the improvement on the insidewith Steve Sargent and what he was able tocontribute.

A - The steps Steve has made from two yearsago to last year were incredible and this year,we are expecting the same thing. With Steve,we drill him and drill him, and the big thingwith him is getting carryover from the drillsinto the games. He showed some glimpses lastyear of what he can do, so we need a moreconsistent effort of that. He has two yearsleft, so we're excited about that.We have toget him to play with a little less foul troubleand not be as aggressive as he is at times. He'sdramatically improved and we are looking for-ward to him having a good year this year.

Q - On the inside, you've brought in freshmanD.J. Covington to help address the size issueof last year.Talk about what an impact hecould make by adding him to the rotation.

A - D.J. has ACC athleticism and he'll be oneof the most athletic guys in this league. Heruns like a deer and has great hands. He maynot be as polished back to the basket, but wedon't need him to be in our system. If he canrebound, run the floor and defend, and he cancertainly do all of those. Every day with work-outs, his confidence grows. He's a great kidand works hard and we expect great thingsfrom him.

Q - Talk about the schedule and the Big Souththis year.

A - We like our schedule. We play a Final Fourteam from last year,West Virginia inCharleston right after Thanksgiving, so that's atough match-up.We also go to VCU, a topteam in the CAA, and that will give our alumsin Richmond a chance to see us play.We goback over to Marshall to rekindle an oldSouthern Conference match-up.The Big Southis going to be crazy this year. It's really difficultto make preseason predictions.

UNC Asheville has a lot of people back andthey are going to be very tough.Winthrop isgoing to be good again. Presbyterian willascend very quickly with the players they red-shirted coming back. Coastal keeps gettingtransfers and Coach Ellis does a fine job downthere. On paper, Charleston Southern has asmuch talent as anybody and Liberty andRadford should be a factor.

Q - Are you as committed as ever to thisstyle of play that you began four years ago?

A - I'm more committed than I've ever beennow because we've recruited players to playto this system. That's always been what we'vehoped to do. Now we are getting the kidswe've recruited to play this way. With theaddition of freshman point guard RodneyGlasgow, we're getting the engine we neverreally had, and you need a point guard thatreally understands the system and gets peoplethe ball when they're open and when theyneed it. He certainly fills that bill, but he canalso score. You have to have big guys who aremobile and can run and jump and we thinkwe've put together a team that can do that. Our kids are now more comfortable playingthat way. So I think we are very difficult toprepare for.

That's our goal, in all games we play this year,we want to be difficult to prepare for, and wewant to prevent our opponents from doingwhat they do in their other games and wewant to be hard to play against.

    Head Coach Duggar Baucom

Duggar Baucom begins his sixth season as head coach of VMIBasketball. Since taking over the program, he has injected a brand offast-paced, high scoring hoops that has brought the team success onthe court and wide-spread acclaim off the court.

Each of the past four seasons, Baucom's Keydets have led the NCAA inscoring, a feat never before accomplished at the NCAA Division I level. On apair of occasions during that time, the Keydets had the nation's leading scorerdonning their uniform - a feat only performed 10 times in NCAA history. Inaddition, the 2008-09 teams 24 wins were the second-most in school history, trailing only the 1976-77 team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament's"Sweet 16", and VMI's second-place finish in the Big South was easily its bestsince joining the circuit in 2003-04.

Since transitioning to the up-tempo, high-flying system, the VMI recordbooks and undergone a major facelift as 76 school individual, team and facilityrecords been rewritten in the Baucom era.The VMI head man was rewardedwith a second contract extension prior to the 2008-09 season, and provedhimself worthy of such by leading his team to a 24-8 mark and a berth in theconference finals, their second-such berth in three years.

That seasons breakthrough campaign began with a bang. In a win that wasdescribed by renowned author John Feinstein as pretty high on the all-timestunners list,VMI entered the hallowed halls of Rupp Arena and walked awaywith a historic, 111-103 win over Kentucky in front of a silenced crowd of22,579.That victory kick-started an unforgettable campaign that saw theKeydets profiled in Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine and the New YorkTimes, along with several other major media outlets, all while winning 10 moregames than the previous season and advancing to the programs second BigSouth Championship Final in three seasons. The season saw Baucom honoredas the 2009 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 3Coach of the Year, while he was also among 10 finalists for the Hugh DurhamAward, given annually to the nations top mid-major coach.

The Keydets' investment in the high-octane approach paid immediate divi-dends when Baucom and staff rolled out the strategy two weeks before the2006-07 season opener. The results were astounding. Using an up-tempo sys-tem for most of the season, the Keydets won the most games (14) in nineyears and advanced to the championship game of the Big South Tournament. The Keydets also set new NCAA season marks in three-pointers, both madeand attempted, 3-pointers made per game and steals.

VMI was declared the 2006-07 stat champion in four team categories andtwo individual categories. The Keydets ranked first in Division I in scoringoffense (100.9 PPG), three point field goals (13.4) made per game, assists pergame (14.8), and steals per game (13.4).

Individually, junior forward Reggie Williams was declared the scoringchampion in Division I after averaging 28.1 points per game. Sophomore guard

Travis Holmes captured the steals per game statisticalchampionship with 3.4 per game.

Records fell in bunches that season as well, asby seasons end, nearly 75 records ranging from theVMI school annals to opponent facility marks hadfresh ink on them.

During the campaign, Baucom's program gar-nered national recognition for their astounding offen-sive numbers as media outlets from all across thecountry wanted to tell the story. The New YorkTimes, ESPN.com and Sports Illustrated.com werejust some of the national outlets who featuredKeydet basketball.

By leading VMI to the Big South Finals wherethey fell to eventual champion Winthrop by a slimthree-point margin, Baucom guided the Keydets to aconference championship game setting for the firsttime since 1988.

Baucom became the 29th head basketball coachof the Virginia Military Institute on April 12, 2005,bringing impressive credentials from TusculumCollege in Greenville,Tennessee, where he directedthe NCAA Division II Pioneers to back-to-back win-ning seasons including a conference regular seasonand conference tournament championship. In twoseasons at Tusculum, Baucom compiled a mark of 37-19. In 2004-05, the Pioneers finished 18-11 on theyear to post their fourth straight winning season.Tusculum caught fire in the postseason as thePioneers won their first Food Lion South AtlanticConference Tournament title, while earning the pro-gram's first-ever NCAA Tournament berth.Tusculumwas eliminated in the South Atlantic Regional quar-terfinals, falling 91-88 in overtime to top-seeded andNo. 3 Bowie State University.

While at Tusculum, Baucom mentored three All-South Atlantic Conference selections in Brad Hawks(2003-04, 2004-05), Drew Harmon (2003-04) andGreg McIntosh (2004-05). Baucom was namedTusculum's head coach in August, 2003, and guidedthe squad in his debut season to a 19-8 record whilecapturing TC's first-ever South Atlantic Conference

Men's Basketball Championship. It was alsoTusculum's best basketball record since the Pioneersbecame a NCAA Division II member. Baucom wasnamed 2004 South Atlantic Conference Coach of theYear.

Baucom was well familiar with VMI basketballprior to his arrival, having served as an assistant attwo Southern Conference schools when the Keydetscompeted in the SoCon. He made his collegiatecoaching debut in 1995-96 at Davidson Collegewhere he served as an assistant coach with theWildcats.
