Dear YLC Members, Alumni, Supporters and Friends,

Never have I seen such a dedicated group of young people working for one cause: A better New Orleans through leadership development. Some would say that this dedication comes from the adversity we’ve faced as a community over the past five years post-Katrina. In fact, the YLC has been the strong voice of young professionals in New Orleans for almost 25 years. It has been an honor to serve in the organization, and I’m so proud of what our team has accomplished together this year. Here are some highlights I’m especially proud of in 2010:

• A small committee of volunteers began working together to organize a tour of historic homes that were renovated using “green” technologies and construction materials. The inaugural home tour dubbed Le Vert Tour (Le Vert = green in French) was a project that came out of the YLC’s Leadership Development Series (LDS). LDS participant and YLC member, Chappell Williams, came up with this innovative project and is leading efforts to execute it. Go Chappell!

• Another team of YLC members launched a new mentoring program called Youth Run New Orleans, which teams YLC volunteers with high school kids to run together. This program was a dream of a young teacher, André Fiegler, while she was teaching in St. Bernard Parish through the Teach for America program. As all Teach for America teachers enjoy free YLC membership, the YLC stepped up to support André’s dream as she gathered other teachers and YLC members to volunteer to run with the kids.

• Another group worked together to expand the YLC’s Power Ties program to engage more volunteers and reach more kids than ever before. When Jenny Durkin decided it was time to go off to graduate school, she didn’t abandon this program that she led for three years. She reached out to some of her most loyal Power Ties volunteers and transitioned them into leadership positions to run Power Ties moving forward. Many thanks to Sheila Wilkinson, Josie Hendler and Mimi Tsai for saying “yes” and stepping up!

• Yet another team of YLC’rs re-launched the ubiquitous Proud to Call It Home campaign to include a YLC member discount program to promote local retailers. This was accomplished through a unique collaboration of various marketing professionals from many different ad agencies in New Orleans who all came together to volunteer their services and talents. Special thanks to Skipper Bond and Lauren Schug Wilson for quarterbacking the team!

• And finally, a massive committee of volunteers put together another successful year of YLC Wednesday at the Square, which has become the organization’s main fundraiser, generating more than $200,000 in revenue that is pumped right back into the community, funding other YLC initiatives. I can’t say enough about Erica Woodley and Warren Surcouf’s dedication to this event, and about all the volunteers who show up week after week to help sell tickets, pour beer, count money and help with sponsors on site. It truly takes an army, and we have one dedicated army for these concerts.

I could go on. There are many more stories like this throughout the organization. At the heart of what we do is allow people to tap into their passions and become leaders.

I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your commitment to the Young Leadership Council. Your passion for our projects and various leadership roles in the community is an inspiration.

Regards,

Daniel N. Forman

YLC Wednesday at the Square

It was another great year for the concert series that has become a rite of spring in New Orleans and a major source of fundraising for the Young Leadership Council. Crowds averaged 6,000 people each week. More than 50 volunteers worked to sell food and beverage tickets, pour beer for thirsty patrons, serve soda and help with sponsor tents.

The 2010 series was underwritten by the New Orleans Saints, Republic National Beverage Company and Abita Beer, SDT Waste & Debris Services, The Sunshine Pages, CC’s Community Coffee House, the Downtown Development District and Acadian Ambulance.

In The Spotlight

One Book One New Orleans In the New Orleans area, almost 20% of adults are rated at the lowest literacy level. This severely limits their ability to complete a job applica-tion, advance in the work place, find an intersection on a street map, read faith-based literature or help children with their homework.

The Young Leadership Council and the Literacy Alliance of Greater New Orleans teamed up once again in 2010 to present a powerful campaign to combat the literacy chal-lenges we face in New Orleans. During a reading period from August 25-October 9, the YLC invited New Orleans residents to share the common experience of reading the same book at the same time and held events to bring the community together around this book. The 2010 reading selection was: Satchmo: My Life In New Orleans, an autobiography by Louis Armstrong.

During the 2010 reading period,• 1,000 books funded by Shell were distributed to schools and adult learning programs . • Hundreds of adult learners used Satchmo in Literacy Alliance reading programs. • Dillard University freshman read Satchmo as part of their first-year curriculum. • Nine “tracks” or events were planned to engage the community around Satchmo. More than 1,000 people participated in the events. • YLC partnered with Satchmo Summerfest on programming as a tie-in with the book selection, which opened the program up to a new audience.

YLC Wednesday at the Square wouldn’t happen without its dedicated planning committee. Thank you to the 2010 dream team of Dan Forman, Erica Woodley, Warren Surcouf, Ashley Merlin, Graham Gibby, Ines Sigel, Aaron Maggie, Trevor Wisdom, Nancy Kockett, Bradley McCoy, William Wolf, Kim Welsh and BethAnn Brannon.

Trombone Shorty opened the 2010 YLC Wednesday at the Square concert series in Lafayette Square.

YLC Wednesday at the Square continued to see record crowds in 2010.

Ashley Merlin was a key part of the YLC Wednesday at the Square planning team, coordinating volunteers each week.

YLC Expands its Involvements in New Orleans Outreach Power Ties ® The YLC expanded its participation in the New Orleans Outreach Power Ties® program in 2010 through local partnering organization, New Orleans Outreach, adding a fall program to its agenda. Power Ties is a career awareness program that links professionals from various oc-cupations with New Orleans 8th grade students through a series of career-oriented workshops and a Career Day.

Power Ties was originally created by a YLC member who wanted to teach young teens valuable skills in job readiness. New Orleans Outreach took over primary operation of the program because it has staff inside the schools where the programs are executed. YLC continues to provide volunteer leadership. In 2010, the YLC served two schools - McDonough #35 Senior High School and Arthur Ashe Charter School.

Hats off to YLC member, Jenny Durkin, who resurrected YLC’s participation in the program in 2007 and has grown the project since then. In 2011, the program has plans to expand even more by adding two more schools.

YLC Answers the Call to Help Keep the Hornets in NOLA It was late December. There were six home games remaining for the Hornets to reach attendance benchmarks before deciding if the team would exercise its opt-out clause in its lease with the New Orleans Arena. The YLC got a call from Business Council President Greg Rusovich (who was the 1991 YLC president). The call was a request for YLC to use its extensive network of young professionals to rally to the cause and help keep this major league sports franchise in the city for obvious economic reasons.

YLC President-elect Joe Giarrusso took the charge of putting together a consortium of young professional groups to help boost attendance at the remaining games. Using social media and public relations, the YLC and other groups promoted a two-for-one ticket offer and pre-game party package. The cost of the free ticket was underwritten by the groups.

The result....thousands of people attended those two games–people who likely otherwise may not have made it out to the games—and a significant impact was made on the attendance averages that were tallied in the team’s last few games leading up to the deadline.

One Book One New Orleans held their launch event for the 2010 reading period at the McKenna Museum of African Art.

We are proud of this grassroots literacy campaign that was 100% driven by YLC member-volunteers. Special thanks to YLC members Mairin Charles and Sayde Finkel for their outstanding leadership throughout the 2010 campaign.

The YLC has maintained its tradition of highlighting 25 members of the community each year since its inception. The Role Model Gala continues to be one of the most popular black tie fundraising events in the city.

YLC Role Models are chosen based on how they have:

• Promoted a positive attitude and an unyielding desire to enhance the quality of life in our community;• Strived to unite our community in collaborative efforts for its future prosperity;• Served as an exemplary role model to young talent in the community;

• Taken an effective and vigorous leadership role in the community; and• Made significant contributions in their specific fields of endeavor.

The 24th Annual Role Model Gala filled the ballroom of the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel with more than 700 people in attendance and raised approximately $100,000 for YLC projects and programs.

Special thanks to Gala chairs, LaToria Willis and Chrissy Sheets, for the countless hours of work they put into coordinating plans for the event!

College Admissions Project When a study revealed that middle income “C” students get into college at a higher rate than lower income “A” students because low income kids have less resources to navigate the college

admissions process with than their middle-class counterparts, a YLC member came up with a solution. Through the College Admissions Project, volunteer guides are paired one-on-one with public school seniors to guide them through the paperwork and requirements necessary to gain entry into a college of their choice.

Green It offers opportunities to get involved in “green” initiatives in New Orleans. Current efforts include sponsoring a school recycling program, volunteering with the city’s recycling program, an ongoing partnership with Friends of City Park to maintain the Popp Fountain, working with a New Orleans area public school to build a garden on their campus and working with the LSU AgCenter to volunteer on Wetlands projects.

The Leadership Development Series is a 10-week seminar class that teaches YLC members the basics of running a nonprofit organization or a YLC project. Entry to the class is competitive, with approximately 30 students being accepted each year.

Le Vert Home Tour A new project, Le Vert Home Tour focuses on making sustainable living practices accessible and realistic for young professionals and all New Orleanians.

One Book One New Orleans A campaign for literacy and community, One Book One New Orleans calls on residents in New Orleans to share the reading of the same book at the same time every Fall. It is a joint project of the YLC and Literacy Alliance of Greater New Orleans.

Project Prodigy is a summer music camp planned and coordinated by YLC volunteers and led by professional musicians to continue the rich musical heritage of our community.

RECreate is a youth recreation program that offers high-quality, accessible and educational recreation activities to youth in the Central City area.

Volunteer in the Arts In an effort to support the rich artistic culture of New Orleans, the YLC has a dedicated program focused on coordinating volunteers for arts-based events. Volunteer in the Arts is a win-win for the YLC as it allows young professionals who may not otherwise be able to afford admission to some of these events a chance to experience them as volunteers.

Where Ya’ Rack? works to install unique and secure bicycle parking racks throughout New Orleans to encourage cycling as an environmentally friendly and healthy transportation option for commuting, short trips and errands. Racks are sponsored by citizens, businesses or property owners and installed by YLC member-volunteers.

The YLC Toastmasters Club is a small group of YLC member-volunteers that meet twice each month to develop public speaking and leadership skills through practice and feedback using the Toastmasters International model.
